James was freaking out. It was fair reaction and Lily knew it, but she also knew that Violet was fussy and needed to be set down for a nap, the sooner the better. She'd managed to transfigure a nappy into a reasonably big cushion for Vi to flop around on until James decided if he could handle having an infant daughter, but without knowing if she would be packing up her child to continue on into the village now or in a few hours, or if James would need to make himself scarce and therefore if she and Vi would be sleeping alone in the village tonight... it all seemed a big waste of time to try to coddle her into sleep. She didn't have Violet's crib, obviously. Nor did she have the plush bear Frank had given her days after her birth. Nor her blanket, so soft that it barely registered against Lily's skin. The only thing she did have was the spare nappy they were using as a mattress. So James was understandably freaking out, but so was Lily, who now had an infant daughter and none of her things as well as a husband who hadn't experienced what she had and who might very well reject-
She was being stupid. As if James could ever reject her and their baby. Even if he didn't remember making it.
You don't need to do this right away if you're not ready, she wrote, annoyed, and had to stop for a moment to shift Violet back to the centre of her play mat before she put another pebble in her mouth as she had early.
She didn't even have any of her toys.
Frustrated, Lily finished writing her message and threw the journal off to the side to lean back against the trunk of the tree she had chosen for its dense foliage. She could still see the dappled sunlight through her eyelids. It was nice out, here, in a way it hadn't been in ages on Delphine's island, but that didn't reassure her. She had as little control over being here as she'd had on that island and even less a clue what to expect. Whoever had taken her and Violet here - and she wasn't convinced it wasn't Delphine after all - wanted her separated from James. Her James. Their James. And their Remus and their... everyone! Lily beat her head against the tree once and regretted it immediately, wincing as she put a hand up against it; nothing would be improved by giving herself a concussion.
Violet gave a happy chirp, forcing Lily's eyes open. She'd made it back into the dirt and was investigating a twig with her tongue.
"Oh, for crying out loud, Vi!" Lily whined, prying her daughter's tiny fist open to chuck her new toy towards the clearing. "You're as impossible as your father, aren't you?"
