Definitely Something
Who: Finn and Avery
When: Afternoon
Where: Finn’s house
After her argument with Darcy that morning, Avery had been in a sour mood ever since. School had dragged on, and she had avoided her cousin the best she could until she was done for the day. She had to work a shift at the pub, but it wasn’t for a while yet, and she felt like she had plenty of time to stop by Finn’s and see him for a bit.
Knocking on his front door, Avery then reached up to to tighten her ponytail, wishing she had put some more care into her appearance. Jeans and a dark red t-shirt were incredibly plain, but Avery didn’t really think Finn would care much about her outfit.
Finn had called into work, finding that being at home was more important. Or rather, he’d been busy working on his backup plan. Audrey had said that hurting Eli wasn’t an option, though he was still considering ways to knock the beast unconscious, which he had a feeling Eli would recover from. The other option involved restraint. There’d be no trying to control the monster, just tying it up. Sadly, the persona of his that helped him deal with the fact that his friend was turning into a monster, was the same one that wanted a mage and a warded circle or some sort of control spell. Sadly, he didn’t have access to any of those things. So he’d had to improvise. He was working on chains when Avery arrived, something he’d borrowed from the lumberyard. Setting down his things he went to the door, opening it with a small smile. “Hey there.” He didn’t care much about her outfit, especially considering he was in what mostly amounted to work clothes, a stained, worn in t-shirt and pants.
"Hi," Avery said, smiling when he answered the door, despite her mood. Maybe it was a good sign that her lips immediately wanted to smile when she saw him. "I finally get to see the mysterious home of Finn Mason." It was a lame tease, but she didn't want to just walk inside and start dumping her issues on him.
Finn looked at the house, then shrugged. “There isn’t much to see.” Minus the kitchen and backyard which were full of what he’d been working on to deal with Eli being a werewolf. He hesitated, knowing he’d rather sit on the porch, but wound up moving so she could come inside. “We can head up to my room.”
She stepped inside, glancing around anyway because she was curious, even if there wasn't much to see, like Finn had said. Avery wanted to know more about him, and that included seeing where he lived. Returning her attention to his face, Avery gave a faint smile and nodded. "Okay, sure. Is anyone else home?"
“I think the others are headed this way, but I haven’t seen them.” He closed the door behind them then led the way to the stairs, starting up them and towards his room. Once there he let her in, though there wasn’t much to see. He didn’t have much in the way of things. Just a bed and dresser. The nicest thing about his room was the window seat, but even that was plain.
The room was a little plain and there wasn't anywhere really to sit but the bed and window seat. Avery opted for the safer choice and slipped her bag off to set down before she walked over and sat on the window seat. "Is everything okay?" Avery asked, watching Finn. "You said you had a lot on your plate."
Finn wound up sitting on the bed, across from her, shaking his head. “Just dealing with some things with our group. Nothing we can’t handle.” Or so he hoped. That was still yet to be determined. “What was on your mind?”
“Do you want to talk about it?” Avery asked, thinking it was important to ask him that much, anyway. She was willing to listen, if he did. Though she wondered if it was about Eli. If Lochlan was a werewolf, then surely that meant Eli was too. But Lochlan had asked her to keep it a secret, so if Eli was a werewolf, she doubted Finn would just come out with something like that.
Finn shook his head. “Not at the moment.” He didn’t want to go into what Eli had become, and what they had to do to deal with it. Maybe if they survived this full moon. “You said you had things going on?” he tried again to get her to talking about herself.
"Okay." Avery figured that would be his answer, even if it was a little disappointing. But she couldn't expect Finn to want to talk to her about personal stuff after only a few dates. Although Avery was there for that very reason, wasn't she? She shrugged one shoulder softly and started playing idly with the bracelet she was wearing. "It's just... I'm worried about my brother. I'm actually moving out of the house with Darcy so I can live with him instead. He hasn't really been himself since he got attacked by that wolf. But he keeps trying to make jokes to deal with it... I mean, that's normal, 'cause it's Lochlan and he jokes about everything, but... still." Her eyes were on Finn's face, and she searched for any sign that he might put two and two together and realize Lochlan was what Eli was. Unless he was in the dark about the werewolf thing. "Darcy and I got into a fight about it this morning. Me moving out."
Acknowledgement flashed across Finn’s face, but he hadn’t seen the actual change in Eli yet, just had him making a mental note of it. “Do you think living with him will help?” he asked. It had helped them, but at the same time, he and his friends couldn’t be separated really. “What was Darcy upset about? Did she not want you to leave?”
"It might. I'm closer to him than the others, so..." Avery trailed off. She hoped that living with Lochlan wouldn't damage their relationship in any way. She knew how easy it was to get annoyed with someone when you were in close proximity all the time. Or even some of the time. "Darcy was upset that I was moving out and not her. I don't think it had anything to do with me leaving. I think she's just sore that I'm leaving before she is. We won't miss each other, believe me."
“Why not just let her go?” Finn asked, not seeing why it mattered one way or another, but he had no desire to leave his friends. “Are you upset about moving out?”
“Because…why should I let her go? I made plans to leave,” Avery protested. “Lochlan and I want to find somewhere else to live. I told her she could stay and find a friend to live with. It shouldn’t be that big a deal, you know?” She rested her elbows on her knees and sighed. “I’m not upset, no. I’m actually happy about it. She doesn’t like me, and we fight a lot. I just want to be around people who make me happy.”
“I was just thinking you wouldn’t have to leave,” he said shrugging his head. “I suppose it would depend on who she had move in. That might not be appealing if she can’t find the right person.” He had a feeling he wasn’t helping though. “You should be around who makes you happy.”
Avery shrugged again. “I’m sure she’ll find someone.” She was positive Darcy would be happier with anyone but Avery, anyway. “I don’t mind leaving. She just wants to go so she can move farther away from the family.” Finn was listening, and that was all Avery really wanted. She knew he wouldn’t have all the answers, and she didn’t really need them. It was just nice to be able to talk to someone else. Avery smiled softly at Finn. “Well, my brother makes me happy. And you do, too.”
Just so long as the person was Liam, Finn was fine with Darcy being on her own. “He looked up at her when she said he made her happy, surprised. “I do?”
Avery tilted her head slightly, the small smile still on her lips. "Yeah. Why do you look so surprised?" He had told her in the park that she made him happy... though Avery remembered being mildly surprised at that too.
He shrugged lightly. “I wasn’t sure. Sometimes I think...I think you just aren’t happy. Not because of me, just that you aren’t.”
That brought a look of confusion to her face, and Avery arched a brow, straightening a bit on the window seat. "What do you mean?" There were moments she was sad, sure, but everyone had those moments. And Avery was fairly certain she had always had a fun time with Finn when they were together.
Finn considered his words before saying them. “There are more things that seem to upset you than don’t,” he told her, not sure if that made sense or not.
That was still a little confusing, and Avery tried to recall what it was they talked about that upset her. Besides her brother getting hurt, and Darcy. "That's a pretty large statement," Avery said after a moment. "You think I'm just an unhappy person in general?" She didn't sound accusing, or even angry. It was just a question she was curious about.
He thought about that then shook his head, getting up to sit next to her. “I think you’ve got a lot more that’s making you unhappy than happy, that’s all. You said you don’t have anyone around that makes you happy, or not many people. Things like that.” He reached for her hand, holding it in both of his.
"There are things that make me unhappy, but I'm not unhappy. I didn't realize I was making you think that." Avery felt her face flush hotly. Maybe she had been whining to him too much about her problems. Maybe she just needed to keep certain things to herself. Avery's gaze drifted down to the way he held her hand. "No wonder you wanted to kiss me all the time. It had to get annoying after awhile, if that's how I was really coming across," she joked weakly.
“It wasn’t annoying,” Finn corrected. “Though I did know that that made you happy. I was trying to help.” He watched her fingers, tracing the tiny bones.
Avery chuckled softly, unable to help herself. She brought her gaze up from her hand to his face. "So you were only kissing me because you wanted to help make me happy?"
Finn shrugged his shoulders. “And it was fun. I enjoyed it. But I knew it made you happy too. Especially, since I’m not sure I do all the time.”
"We've only been out on a few dates," Avery pointed out, sliding her fingers through his. "And I've had fun on all of them. If I didn't enjoy spending time with you, Finn, I wouldn't keep asking you to do it some more, you know?"
“I know. I thought as much. I just wonder. I know I’m...difficult.” Finn smiled at her fingers in his, squeezing his hand.
She shot him a look and shook her head. "You're not difficult, Finn. I know you have issues with your memory, and that's understandable. But it's not difficult." Avery wasn't one to give up easily, anyway, but she honestly didn't find Finn frustrating, or hard to deal with.
"Should I ask..." Finn started, not comfortable with any of the words he came up with. "I'm glad you don't find me difficult. I'm curious what we are I guess. I'm not sure."
"What we are?" Avery asked. She recalled something Darcy said that morning. You and Finn are something. That might have been true but Avery hadn't known what it was. "I'm not sure. What do you want to be?" She didn't want to assume anything, especially now.
Finn shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not entirely sure what it should be. I think it’s whatever you’re comfortable with.” And it would give answers to what had gone on between himself and Audrey, or at least her arguments for his behavior.
"Well.... I don't know." Avery bit her lip a bit nervously and looked down at their hands. "It's kind of weird deciding what we are all by myself." But she was an O'Reilly and Avery wasn't about to shy away from the conversation. "Do you want to be something?"
“I wasn’t going to make you decide on your own. I was just curious how you saw it.” Finn smiled a little. “I wouldn’t mind being something.” He didn’t have a reason otherwise. Well, except Audrey, but that was different. “I just want to know what it is you see.”
She returned his smile and squeezed his hand lightly. Avery took a moment to think about it, because Finn was hard to read sometimes, and she didn’t often know what he was thinking or feeling.
"I like you. And I like spending time with you. I want to get to know you better. And maybe show you I'm not entirely unhappy," Avery added with a smile. "I just don't want you to feel obligated to call yourself my boyfriend if you're not ready for something like that yet. How do you feel about it?"
Finn nodded along with what she was saying. “I like spending time with you too. I’m pretty sure I’m ready for whatever. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal to us.”
"Ready for whatever." Avery released a laugh, unable to help but be amused a little. "That's super romantic. I like that." She wasn't being sarcastic, or anything. She kind of liked that Finn wasn't cheesy or corny. Though in the back of her mind, she remembered admitting to Lochlan that she didn't think Finn really liked her the way a girl would want a boy too. But maybe she was wrong. She didn't really know. "It's not a big deal, no. I mean... I don't want to date anyone else. And if you don't want to date anyone else, then... I wouldn't mind telling people you're my boyfriend."
There was the issue with the fact that he did want to date someone else, but Audrey had said what she’d said. That he couldn’t see both of them. “I think that sounds reasonable. If you want to call it that.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek. That made the most sense to be with her. They were definitely something, why not give it a name.
"Okay." It felt a little odd to Avery. The whole thing seemed almost business like somehow, but Avery was finding that was just how Finn was. "Is that what you want to call it?" Avery asked, after a brief moment. Because no, it wasn't a big deal, but Avery sort if wanted to know Finn wanted that kind of exclusivity. 'Ready for whatever' was definitely humorous, but she wanted to make sure Finn really wanted this too.
He half smiled, watching her eyes. “I think it makes the most sense, so yes.” Though it did weigh a little heavy, but again, he didn’t have another answer.
"Yeah, I suppose it does," Avery murmured. She had no idea why that felt weird to her. She knew Finn was just being logical about it. Avery considered pushing him on it, but she didn't think she was going to get a better answer. And it wasn't even fair to want a better answer. Avery fell silent, her eyes ticking to the blanket on Finn's bed.
Finn watched her, head tilted to the side. "You're upset." That was obvious and it made him nervous; this wasn't supposed to make her upset was it?
Avery’s gaze snapped to his and she shook her head quickly. “No! I’m not. Promise.” She smiled and leaned in to press a kiss against his lips. “Promise,” she said again. She wasn’t upset, not really.
He touched her cheek as she kissed him, receptive to it, but watching her eyes. "We don't have to. You don't have to. I feel like I asked you to decide on something you weren't planning on making a decision about."
"No, I want to," Avery said, giving him another smile so he wouldn’t doubt her. "I think maybe it was something we needed to talk about, right? So there's no confusion or anything." She might have questioned it eventually, just so she knew where the lines were.
"Audrey had commented on it so I thought it was a good idea to bring it up," Finn admitted. "But it is good to know." He smiled as well, hoping things were as okay as Avery said.
"Audrey?" Avery had never officially met Audrey, though she felt like she wanted to eventually, if Finn wanted to introduce them. "What did she say?" She was guessing it was the same thing as what Darcy had implied. That Finn was her boyfriend, although Avery had denied it at the time since she hadn't known what they were. Kind of funny that their friends would be the ones to push the conversation along instead of Avery and Finn getting there themselves.
"She had called you my girlfriend and I told her that I didn't think that was right. She did point out that it was something and it met all the criteria for girlfriend," Finn explained, smiling a little. "I thought it was best to ask.”
"Oh." It was impossible not to chuckle a little at that. Avery reached up to rub at the nape of her neck lightly. "I didn't know there was criteria for being a girlfriend." She had never been one before, after all.
"I suppose I hadn't thought of it that way, not until she said something at least. But it makes sense." He leaned in closer, kissing her again.
"Maybe our friends know more than we do," Avery murmured, although she didn't really consider Darcy a friend. But whatever. She brought her hand up to his cheek when he kissed her, deciding she didn't really care about technical terms. If they liked each other, that was enough for her. Only now she knew not to start kissing on other boys. Not that there were any for her to kiss on, but... the line was there now.
