A different type of silence
Who:Liam and Audrey
When:Early Evening
Where:Their house
Liam hadn’t really known what to do after he’d met with Darcy, so instead of staying at the hospital, he came back to the house. The other nurses didn’t seem to mind, not after what they probably overheard in the hallway. Still, even when he got to the house he didn’t go inside. Instead, he turned toward the sapling planted in the front yard and went to sit beside it.
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out something small from his scrubs pocket, turning it over in his hand as he looked at the sapling. His sister’s bracelet was firmly around his wrist, but in his hand was Terry the Very Secure Ninja, helping him come to terms with something very important in his mind. He missed Audrey. Through all of his, he really just missed Audrey.
Finn was upstairs having sex of some description. She knew that. She'd gone to her room to grab a notebook and pen, and heard enough. Which...she had no idea how to feel about. Not even a little bit. So going outside was a good way to go. As she walked past a window downstairs, she spotted Liam outside. So, she headed out to him. "Hey," she said. "Is this alone time? Or can I sit with you?"
Just hearing her voice made him feel a little better. Audrey was here. Things were always better when Audrey was around. Smiling softly, he turned to look up at her and then nudged his head toward the tree. "Not alone time. Just me and Terry," He said, holding out the ninja in his hand. It was worn down now, parts of the paint on his face and robe rubbed off from how often Liam had clutched the toy in his hands, but that only made it mean more to him.
She smiled a bit at that, then sat down with him. "Then I'll join you both," she said. "How've you been? I feel like I haven't gotten to see you properly in a while," she admitted. So much had been going on in the meantime. He had stuff going on on his own, with the girlfriend and everything, Eli's werewolfage had been looming. Though that had cleared itself up. She was still thinking she was going to go through with it. Become one.
Liam felt that way too. He missed Audrey and he felt like he hadn't seen her in far too long. Everything had sort of imploded and he wasn't sure how he dropped the ball on spending time with her, but he didn't want to do that anymore. "Ok. Missed you," He said, looking back over at her and giving her a smile when he did. He held out Terry for her and waited. "Want to hold?"
Reaching out, she took Terry, and looked down at it, running her thumb over the plastic. "Missed you too," she told him. "...how's work?" she asked. She knew it was important to him. Helping people was something Liam was built for, and she was still glad he was getting to work at the hospital, follow that dream.
“Work is good,” He said, looking over at her and smiling when he saw Terry in her hand. He liked that. Terry and Audrey made sense. This made sense and he was now wondering why he’d gone so far away from what made sense to him. “Stitched up a kid today. He didn’t even cry,” He said, smiling a little more. “Kids learning songs?”
"Kids are tougher than you think a lot of the time," Audrey commented. "But good you're getting more experience there, too. And they're always learning new songs." Smiling, she set Terry down at the base of the tree. "What's your opinion on Finn and his girl?" she asked.
Liam looked back at Terry by the tree, really liking the sight of him there. It was grounding in a way that made him feel better, feel kind of good again. Until Audrey asked her question and his face screwed up. "I don't know…Don't know her. Feel…outside." Outside of the whole thing, which was not at all what Liam wanted to feel. "Do you?"
It was one of those rare times where Audrey wished that Liam wouldn't speak only in broken phrases. But she didn't say anything. It was how he was. "I don't know either," she admitted. "Has he talked to you at all about her?"
"A little," Liam said, looking back at Audrey as he spoke. "He said she didn't have a problem kissing him." Or something like that. The actual phrasing was probably a little muddled by now in Liam's thoughts.
"Nothing beyond that? Like, important things like how they get along?" Audrey asked. Boys. Why was it they communicated so little? It wouldn't be the first time she was amazed at the lack of detail in boy conversations.
Liam thought on it for a moment then shook his head. “Not really,” He said, looking back at Audrey. “Do you think they don’t get along?” He asked, curious now if this new girl of Finn’s was maybe not the best person for him.
"...is this a guy thing? That you don't talk to each other? Or is this...drifting?" she asked, because she had to know. "And I don't know. I know he's talked to me about it, and he isn't always sounding that solid, or I don't know if she is, and I've tried to encourage him, but...I don't know. I guess I didn't see this coming."
That, Liam had to think about. He didn't want to be drifting but he did feel it in himself, feel less like he was doing things he should have been. "I think..just didn't ask," He said, looking back at Audrey for a moment. He sounded not solid to Audrey? That wasn't good. Maybe he should sit down with Finn again and actually talk about this… "Talk to him again?"
“I will, but I don't want to stick my nose in where it doesn't belong, either. I mean, technically, this isn't actually my business. He's free to do what he wants with whoever he wants, and that's that, and I just worry, but I don't want to get in his way...” she rambled. “I just wanted a second opinion.”
"I can sit with you. When you talk to him. We could talk to him." Why did all of the bad stuff always have to fall on Audrey to handle? Maybe he should step up, be a better friend, a more assertive friend. Running a hand through his hair, he sighed then looked back at Audrey. "Wanna walk?"
“So he feels like we're ganging up? No,” she said, shaking her head. “And you don't like confrontation at all, which this could be if it happens at all. It's not really...” she shook her head. When she'd been in tears because of the importance of talking to Finn, it had been pulling teeth to get Liam to even really entertain considering her thoughts on the matter. She wasn't looking for a repeat performance there. “I'm probably overreacting anyways. I should just shut my mouth, and call it good.” She considered the walk, not sure she did actually want to, but in the end she nodded anyhow. “Sure,” she answered, pushing herself to her feet.
Liam didn't like the way he felt right now. He wasn't sure what was happening inside Audrey's head but it didn't feel outwardly like it was something good. Quiet, he stood up after picking Terry up from the grass and pocketing him. "To the lake?" He'd liked the lake when he was there with her before. They'd swam and it was fun and exciting and he wouldn't mind doing that again. It might be ok then, to be in a place where it was just the two of them and nothing else.
"Sure," Audrey said, starting in that direction. She fell quiet, not sure what to say. Her mind was all over the place, and she figured there weren't any real right answers, and it was basically a situation where she really did just need to shut up. But it was still bothering her, not really sure what was happening in general. "So...good things going at the hospital?"
Liam watched Audrey, not really liking this silence. It didn’t usually feel so forced and right now, he was pretty sure it felt forced. And he didn’t like it. He wanted things to be the way they were, the way they had been before. “Hospital is good,” He said, trying to make more words come out than silence in an effort to help. “I like being there. Lots to do. People to help.” He looked back over at her and drifted a step closer. “What songs are you teaching the kids?”
"Have you been getting good practical experience?" she asked. "And we haven't started anything new lately, we're still working on older stuff. The kids lately seem a little distracted. I think it's just everything going on in the dome. People forget kids sense things. So even if they don't quite know what's going on, they know something is."
"I have. Feeling better about stitching people up now," He said, smiling as he did because this was something he was definitely proud of. He wanted to hone his craft, wanted to help people. "Might not even get scared stitching you up if you were hurt," He said, looking back over at Audrey. "Maybe."
He nodded about the kids, though. "…Can I help?" He definitely couldn't sing, not in any way that Audrey could and he wasn't sure he would even in front of a group of little kids. But if Audrey wanted the help, he would find a way to help.
She smiled at that. “Let’s hope I never need stitches, but if I do, I’ll totally come to you first,” she assured him. “And sure, if you want to. I don’t know if you’ll have time after class, with needing to be at the hospital, but whatever you want to contribute, I’ll take.”
Liam shrugged. "Make time," He said, smiling back at Audrey. After a moment, another question worked its way into his mind. "…How's Eli?" He hadn't really had a chance to talk to Eli after the change and he figured if anyone knew how he was doing, it would be Audrey.
"I don't know, I'm meant to be getting together with him soon," she said. For some reason, however, she did hold back just a little. She didn't tell him that she was planning on signing on for the werewolf thing. Maybe because she still didn't know how it was going to go, and she didn't want Liam to worry. Or maybe because she didn't want to be talked out of it.
