I always thought I was just lucky that my L2 implants only cause migraines, when so many other L2 biotics suffer so much worse — but I think I spoke too soon. My migraines are getting worse, and pain is spreading, mostly through my shoulders and down my arms. I keep forgetting things, little things, and every time I have a lapse in memory or get confused or zone out I start to think that the L2s are catching up with me.

I haven't told Shepard. I didn't want to complain; he has enough of his own shit to deal with.

You're from Hawke's world, aren't you?

I say that like it matters, but Hawke can't fix me, he can just ease the pain.

I am. Thedas. Technically speaking, Hawke is one of my people, but that doesn't matter here. I'm sorry he can't fix your problem.

That's right. You're king, aren't you.

Oh please, don't be. I gave over my life to something that matters. I took the throne for the good of the country, but if my hand hadn't been forced? I would have stayed with the Wardens. I miss it. There's always going to be bullshit, we're an ancient organization with a shaky concept of what rules we should and shouldn't be following, but I've never felt so at home as I did with them.

Then again, every Warden I knew when I was young is dead, except for Kallian. It probably wouldn't be the same anyway.

We both gave up our lives and eventual sanity in exchange for special power to fight. You ever regret it? I know you feel at home with the Wardens now, but you probably didn't have to be one.

No. Not for a second.

The Wardens were good people.

Eh? That's up for debate. The ones I knew were good, I think, but we're not concerned with being the good guys. That's not the point. We save the world from the Blight at any cost, even if we look like villains in the process.

It doesn't matter to you to do what's right?

What's right is not letting the world drown in Darkspawn. Blights are a special hell, the monsters themselves are poisonous to everything they come across, and they will not stop unless the Archdemon is defeated. If a Warden doesn't slay it, its soul jumps to the nearest spawn and just rises again. We've all done unsavory things to save the world from that fate.

It's not to say how it happens doesn't matter. Of course it does. People will call us heroes no matter how we act, but not to try to live up to the praise is just wrong.

But it matters how it's done. I'm a soldier, I know how war works. The way something goes down matters. I can't sleep at night knowing I didn't act with integrity. The ends don't justify the means.

Shepard disagrees.

It does matter. It's just not a popular opinion among most Wardens. If you ask me, inducting murderers and thieves and then telling them that if you can say it's to help fight the Blight, they're allowed to do it, there's half your problem.

You don't think Shepard has integrity?

... That is a problem. I'm part of the Systems Alliance Navy, but I was recently named a Spectre — That's Special Tactics and Reconnaissance. Spectres work for the Galactic Council and they're agents that can work independently to get the job done, even if it means skirting around the law. When you can work outside the law, it doesn't mean you should. It means you can cut through red tape and bureaucratic shit that would slow things down, not kill with impunity.

I think Shepard gets the job done, and he makes decisions that other people can't make. And sometimes that means doing things I can't condone.
