I always thought I was just lucky that my L2 implants only cause migraines, when so many other L2 biotics suffer so much worse — but I think I spoke too soon. My migraines are getting worse, and pain is spreading, mostly through my shoulders and down my arms. I keep forgetting things, little things, and every time I have a lapse in memory or get confused or zone out I start to think that the L2s are catching up with me.

I haven't told Shepard. I didn't want to complain; he has enough of his own shit to deal with.

I know.

I'm coming over, I'm going to run an omni-scan on you.

I'm in my room.

I was going to tell you I'm fine but I can't tell you I'm fine.

Because you're not. Stop trying to lie about it, Kaidan, you could cause brain damage if we can't figure out if something is out of line or needs fixing.

Hawke's been helping me deal with the pain. I'm not completely ignoring it, I promise.

Good, but that's just temporary, it's not a fix.

You should talk to him about it. That other shit? Probably not as important in the long run if something happens to you.

I still can't shake the feeling that he's my commander, not my boyfriend. There are things you say to one that you don't say to the other.

He'd want to know either way. If he's your commander, your health is important to his mission. As his boyfriend, your health is still important to him.

When we were at war it meant pushing through the pain. Migraines were hard to fight through but getting the job done was more important.

I understand that. After all my years of service in a jaeger, there was no guarantee that the next time I suited up, the drift wouldn't finally overload my brain. No guarantee that I wouldn't get sick like so many of the first generation of pilots did. I took the chance time and again anyway.

You're not at war here.

Mostly the pain. The lapses, I can't tell if they're a bad sign or if I'm just expecting things to go wrong and I'm overreacting.

I've got to be honest here, Kaidan. That doesn't give me a lot of confidence to put you out in the field.

I will put you out there, because we need the manpower, and I like you. I also have a tendency to foolishly put too much trust in people that maybe I shouldn't. It rarely backfires on me though.

I get that. And if you catch me acting off, take me out. Some L2s got violent.

But I'm also used to fighting through pain. It's not constant, but I'll only back out if the nausea keeps me from physical activity or my vision's blurred, because that endangers everyone.

We're going to need some kind of signal then so that I know when it's pain related.

I have twenty years left, if I'm very lucky and if Kallian doesn't find a way out of it. Ten years ago that sounded like a long time, but every year, it feels shorter and shorter. It's inevitable.

Talk to your friend. Your lover, whichever. I know relationships are complicated (Maker, I know), but that shouldn't be something you dance around.

I'm a Grey Warden. We take Darkspawn blood so we can hunt them and kill their leader, when the time comes. Most people don't survive the ritual. The blood itself gives normal people the Taint that kills them slowly, drives them mad. We're immune to it ourselves, in a sense, but we're really just very slowly dying of it. It takes about thirty years to get to us, before we start hearing the Calling and go mad. We throw ourselves into the Deep Roads and die fighting Darkspawn, rather than dying insane and bedridden.

I'm not looking forward to it. It may come faster. I don't know.

I say that like it matters, but Hawke can't fix me, he can just ease the pain.
