It has come to my attention that Dean Winchester is not the current holder of Return of the King, and that it may in fact have been lifted without permission from a common area.

Library books are meant to be returned to the library when the reader has finished with them. They are not meant to be hoarded in private or taken out of turn. Those of us who read depend upon this principle. When members of the community do not abide by the laws of the community, order breaks down and chaos reigns.

Return the book.

I am no such thing. A librarian is the most fearsome creature imaginable. Sure, the Night Vale Public Library boasts fatalities higher than the national average for libraries, and some of that is undoubtedly due to the faceless spectre who roams the biography section. But those Randalls are not unique.

We actually used to burn down the library regularly, but we decided it would be safer just to reinforce the walls with military-grade steel.

Everyone speaks nonsense. It's only through shared experiences and a mutually agreed upon perception of reality that we learn to understand each other. Otherwise we are just babbling into the darkness. And sometimes, the darkness babbles back.

no. there's real, and there's not real.

Is it comforting to think that you have a monopoly on reality?

there's real, there's not real, and then there's the fade and that's real even though it shouldn't be.

i'm not stupid. i know there's more than one world now. i know there's stuff out there i don't know about, but i know it's either real or it's not and not some "agreed-on" shit.

Gender is an agreed-upon illusion. There is nothing real about gender.

what

yes there is.

Then how do you explain the wide variation in male and female behavior? If gender was a hard and fast rule that dictated how people act, there couldn't be variation. Being male or female is ultimately arbitrary, varies from culture to culture, person to person, daydream to daydream.

yeah, but it's real. that stuff's in you. what you are, what you want.

But when you talk about being female, even though is has no inherent meaning, you can still be understood by other people. If it's real, and not just something that we all agree to pretend to understand, how do we know what we're talking about?

right, how's it not have meaning? i'm a girl. i like other girls. i know what that means.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]worththeharm
2015-06-11 01:16 am UTC (link)
But what does being a girl mean? Is it the same thing that everyone else here who identifies as a girl means when they say it? Does that mean you all perform girlness the same?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]ownthisday
2015-06-11 01:18 am UTC (link)
it means ... whatever, it means girl.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]worththeharm
2015-06-11 01:21 am UTC (link)
And if enough people decided to change the meaning of the word, would that change what your idea of being a girl means?

It happens all the time. Slowly, inexorably, unconsciously, but it happens.

Because we've agreed on what it means. That doesn't make it any more or less real than anything else. Like the surety that time will stretch on infinitely until the moment that it doesn't, and moments cease to be moments.
