Jay - Sunday afternoon
It was still dismally cold out as far as 'Berto was concerned, but the sun was out, so he'd dressed in thick layers against the chill wind and dragged Jay out to soak up as much of it as he could. He hated the way the cold seemed to seep into his very bones, and sometimes it felt like he could count every moment of increasing sunlight as they moved towards spring, even when clouds darkened the sky in a gray pall, and his cheer increased in lockstep with the lengthening of the days.

He pulled his knitted cap farther down over his ears and shivered melodramatically, though he tipped his face up towards the wintry sun for a moment, almost visibly basking, before shifting his attention back to Jay and passing the ball back to him with a sharp tap of his instep. "I still do not understand why people choose to live their lives in this icebox," he teased.

"Yes, because my father would agree to sending me anywhere but the very best," Berto answered, rolling his eyes. Not that he was interested in second best either, of course, but his father was quite emphatic that if his only son was going away to school it was only to get the absolute finest education available.

"I am still hoping he will change his mind about letting me come back for Carvinal next weekend." He was almost more interested in the heat and the sunshine than Carnival itself.

Jay passed the ball after a few circles about his feet. "Y' really think he will?"

"No, not really," he admitted with a sigh, stopping the ball and not bothering with anything fancy this pass through. "He is busy with work, and my mother is away on a dig, and he does not want to leave me to just the servants during Carnifal." Which was irritating to say the least, as it wasn't like it hadn't happened in the past.

"Understandable," Jay replied. He'd been to Roberto's house. A body could go missing there and it'd take a week to search the whole thing.

"Aggravating," Roberto corrected. "It's not like I'm a child...and I had hoped you could have come." It was always more fun with friends, and he'd drifted away from his friends back home since he'd come to school.

Jay shrugged, passing the ball again. "If Momma'd let me." It wasn't like before after all. Middle of the school year was no time to be flying off to Rio. And certainly not for just a weekend.

"It is a great cultural experience," 'Berto pointed out, in the tone he'd likely have used to try and sell it to Mrs. Guthrie. "And a marvelous educational opportunity."

"Exatamente!" he answered, sending the ball sharply back, fueled somewhat by his frustration. He had to pause for a moment to find the English he needed to continue. "There is nothing like Carnival in Rio!"

Jay would normally have caught the ball just fine, but a strangle ripple in his back threw him off balance and he missed. "Yeah," he replied, trotting after it. "Exatamente."

It was almost painful, how Jay's accent mangled the word, but it was much more important that he was trying than that his accent left much to be desired. That would come with time, and Roberto grinned, pleased, though it faded a bit as Jay turned and ran after the missed ball. That wouldn't have happened a few months ago.

"It is too cold for this," he called after him as he started in the same direction. "My nose is going to freeze off. We should go inside and warm up for a while." Whatever was happening with Jay's back, he knew that cold always made it worse.

"No it ain't," he replied, reaching for the ball - as it had fallen into a grate. "You're just too damned sensi-" The world spun suddenly with all the force of a hurricane and Jay crumpled to his knees, both hands planting. His back stretched in a way that just didn't feel natural. Like something was caught, and he tried to shove the panicked feeling down as everything cleared up just as suddenly.

'Berto sped into a run as Jay crumpled and was at his side in a moment.

"Sim," he answered, crouching down to put a careful hand on Jay's forearm - he knew better than to touch his back after something like this. "My blood is thin from years of basking in the sun, humor me and we will go in and get warm."

Jay nodded. His whole body was shaking with nerves, which thankfully 'Berto didn't comment on. Grabbing the ball, he struggled to his feet and tucked it under one arm.

'Berto shifted his grip from Jay's arm to under his elbow, subtly helping him to his feet in a way that would not be apparent to anyone else who might happen by. When Jay was standing he retrieved the ball from his grip, tucking it under his own and debating if there was any way he could support him inside without being obvious about it or, more importantly, causing him more pain.

"We will go in and get out of these layers and defrost at a proper temperature, sim?" And if their room mates were still out and Jay didn't object he'd get his hands on his back and see if he couldn't ease some of the obvious pain.

He felt stiff, as if he'd fallen asleep in an awkward position, under a snowdrift. He didn't comment as 'Berto took the ball, too focused on trying to pull himself together. He had to blink a few times as his vision doubled and the vertigo set in again.

"I don't think standin's a good idea," he commented, shifting his weight which only spread his legs farther, knees bent inward.

That was not a good sign. Usually Jay shook off his reaction quickly, grit his teeth against whatever pain lingered, and insisted on trying to at least appear normal. But it was definitely getting worse lately.

"Do you need to go to medical?" 'Berto asked, concern bleeding through in his voice as he dropped the ball and shifted to support Jay with an arm around his waist. He didn't power up yet, but he was ready to if he needed to carry Jay.

'Berto nodded. "We will go back to the room, then," he agreed easily. He could understand Jay not wanting to be poked and prodded further. "Can you walk, or-" He left it hanging, the offer clear without being stated.

'Berto snorted and gave Jay a mock-sour look despite his pain. "I think I could manage to carry you without hurting anything but your dignity," he pointed out. "But if you wish to save that by walking we can go as slow as you need."

'Berto nodded, expression shifting further into concern for a moment before it smoothed over. If Jay was willing to be carried then it was very bad indeed.

"Fique tranquilo," he murmured, shifting instinctively into his native language and one of the most common platitudes available in it. "We will be inside where it is warm in no time, sim?" His skin shifted to pitch black and a fiery nimbus surrounded him as he let his power activate. He could probably piggy back Jay at least most of the way to their room without powering up, but it would be much slower and less steady, and smooth, quick and easy were essential.

He took one of Jay's hands and shifted around in front of him, pulling that arm carefully over his own shoulder. "Climb on, meu amigo." It seemed the way least likely to aggravate Jay's pain any further.

Jay dropped both arms about 'Berto's shoulders. He was marginally taller, but that didn't matter so much when his roommate was powered up. As his legs were lifted, he dropped his head to 'Berto's shoulder so he didn't have to take in anyone's reactions. God, he just wanted this to be over.

'Berto didn't way attention to whether anyone else was looking or not, just got a good grip on Jay's thighs and headed back to their dorm at the fastest pace he could manage without doing anything that would jostle Jay. It only took a few minutes - they thankfully hadn't gone far - and he eased them carefully through the main doors then headed for the stairs.

"Almost there," he reassured Jay as they moved into the blast of warmth inside.

It was tempting to trot up the stairs, but that would jostle Jay, so 'Berto kept the pace steady, mumbling distracted greetings to the few other kids they passed on the way. When they got to their room 'Berto was relieved that both of their roomies were gone - not an unusual occurrence in the afternoons - and he set Jay carefully down next to their set of bunks and helped him ease himself down onto his own bed on the bottom.

"Can I help? Will heat help?" he asked, crouching down in front of Jay, hands hovering just short of reaching to help strip him out of his jacket and gloves, awkward but earnest in his self-appointed role of caretaker.

"Sim," he answered, already reaching to unzip Jay's jacket. "Just sit still, I will get it." He eased it carefully down over his arms and hands, wincing in sympathy each time he inadvertently jostled Jay. It took a few minutes, going slow and careful, to deal with both the jacket and the shirt, and 'Berto hissed in surprise as he got a look at the parallel welts running down Jay's back over his shoulderblades.

"Are you sure you do not wish to go to the infirmary?" he asked, hands hovering just short of touching the marks.

"What's wrong?" 'Berto usually just set his hands to his skin, or took off his own shirt and pressed up against his back. The fact that he was hesitating was a cause for concern.

"...there are marks. Red marks. Here." His hands were already warm, he'd let his power seep into them as he'd worked, and he dragged his fingers very lightly down either side of the welts on Jay's back, close to but not actually touching the discolored skin.

It really wasn't much more than a minute. 'Berto bolted out the door and down the hall to the lounge and the ice machine in the freezer, filled two plastic bags, and ran back just as quick. He kicked the door shut behind him and grabbed two thin, soft, well-worn t-shirts from his dresser on the way by to wrap the ice packs in.

"Tell me if you want them moved," he ordered, as he settled on the edge of the bed next to Jay and eased the ice oh so carefully into place over the reddest parts of the welts.
