Jay - Ipanema Beach, backdated to...sometime during spring break
The girls were off down the beach, playing in the surf and collecting admirers, and had left Jay and 'Berto to guard their bags and towels. Which was only fair, really, though 'Berto was somewhat uncertain about the wisdom of allowing them to wander the beach without either he or Jay to defend their virtue. They weren't terribly far away, though, and his father had sent two bodyguards to keep watch over them all. Which also meant that it wasn't really necessary for them to be guarding the bags, but saying so would have ruined their fun, which would be ungentlemanly. Which he would never be if he could avoid it.

Which meant he was sitting on a towel next to Jay, soaking up the glorious Brazilian sunshine. And possibly enjoying the equally glorious view. There was no denying that Brazil bred some very very pretty people. Though he'd be happier if he didn't have to keep glaring at people who seemed intent on approaching to try and touch Jay's wings.

"What better place to be than Ipanema in the sunshine?" He leaned into Jay and nudged him with his shoulder, warm and familiar.

He dropped his head back to his arms as his cheeks colored. "They ain't no such thing!" he countered, rolling slightly to one side, so his free wing could bump 'Berto as he stretched it. He felt the arch brush his hair, but it wasn't the face full of feathers he'd been aiming for. Trust his wings to NOT clock someone full on when he was actually trying.

Jay rolled back onto his belly and buried his face in his arms. His traitorous most recent appendages however, happily cooed all about the younger teen. Showering him in attention and seeking attention in return.

'Berto laughed as one wing brushed his hair back from his face. It was fairly obvious that hadn't been the intention, of course, but he grinned at Jay anyway and reached to smooth the feathers of the other wing.

"Fluttery, adorable, and very needy," he amended, shifting his position to something slightly more comfortable, one knee propped against Jay's back as he cententedly stroked his fingers through soft feathers.

"Ah hate you," he mumbled, voice muffled by his arms, accent thick if not clear. His back shifted to accommodate his wings, which were quite content with Roberto's attention; and did not seem the least bit concerned with what he had to say about them.

"You love me," 'Berto corrected mildly. "I am your best friend in the whole world. And-" He grinned at a pair of obviously jealous girls watching and stroked gently deeper in Josh's feathers. "Your wings obviously love me as well. They have excellent taste."

"They're new," he reminded him, though he relaxed into the caresses. As he did, his wings drooped, losing their ability to maintain height without the support. As a result, Roberto ended up with a lap full - and then some - of wings, as one flopped over the other. "They'll learn."

"To love me even more," he agreed cheerfully as they both settled into his lap. "I have been warming them since before they ever saw the light of day, they know how to show their gratitude." He smoothed a few feathers which had shifted out of place then stroked smoothly from the base of one wing out along the arch of it as he looked down the beach for the girls.

"Yeah, you're a regular mother hen." Not that he wasn't grateful. But, Roberto knew that already. Knew it well in fact.

'Berto made an insulted noise and swatted Jay on the back of one shoulder. "I'm not the one with feathers, if anyone's a hen it is you."

Jay pushed himself up - which cause his wings to perk back up instantly - and looked over the accosted shoulder at him with a grin. "I may have th' feathers, 'Berto, but that don't make me a hen. Besides, you're th' one goin' on about layin'."

'Berto looked back at Jay, puzzled. "I did not say anything about laying anywhere."

"Keepin' chicks warm since before they e'er saw th' light o' day is somethin' hens do, 'Berto."

'Berto blinked at him then made a face. "You are not a chick, thankfully." He tugged gently at a handful of feathers. "Even if you are very very feathery."

"Very much too large as well," 'Berto pointed out. "And also not feathery all over," he added, leaning to reach for the sun screen abandoned on the edge of one of the girls' towels.

"It would probably be uncomfortably hot." 'Berto stroked a hand down Jay's wings one more time then shook the bottle of sun screen and squirted some into his hands. "Try to keep the wings still so I don't get lotion in them," he advised as he leaned forward to spread some over Jay's shoulders.

He folded them up, but that just brought them close, arches bumping Roberto's hands out of the way. He tried again. The arches trembled, shifted slightly away from each other, then bounced right back into place. With a heavy sigh, Jay stretched them out instead, wings spanning across the blanket, tips dusting with sand.

'Berto moved his hands out of the way and waited patiently while Jay sorted his wings out - or they sorted themselves out. "That was a bit better than before," he commented encouragingly when they'd spread themselves out.

It obviously wasn't what Jay had intended, but it was still less general fluttering and quivering than before. He waited to make sure they weren't going to move again, the knelt up to reach over the top of them to Jay's shoulders once more.

"I still can't figure out how to fold them up the way Warren showed me," he groused. "He said it'd take a while, but this is ridiculous. I mean, they're my appendages. They should listen like the rest of my limbs." His wings shifted as if in protest, and Jay grumbled into the towel.

'Berto smoothed sunscreen smoothly over Jay's shoulders and then down. His hands were - annoyingly - small, but they were strong and sure and he was ridiculously tactile at the best of times, so there was nothing even remotely strange to him about this.

"They're baby appendages," he pointed out reasonably as he worked his way down. "You couldn't control your arms or legs or anything else when they were as new as your wings. And everyone's powers take time to learn to control."

Jay supposed that was true. Babies had to learn to crawl and walk and feed themselves. Coordination was learned, it wasn't something a body could just up and do fresh out of the womb. As everyone had been telling him: He needed to build muscle strength and exercise them; familiarize himself with their permanence. It was just frustrating. To be fourteen years of age and not be able to control his body. It was damn embarrassing too.

"I suppose," he replied before choking. His whole body froze up as Roberto's hands smoothed down over where his shoulder ended and his wing began. Above him his wings flailed slightly spastic.

'Berto kept his hands in place as he ducked his head away from the flailing of Josh's wings. "Fortunately your arms and legs were somewhat smaller and less menacing, though."

"Y-eah," he husked, holding still as his wings beat twice. The second beat strong enough it forced Jay to raise onto his forearms.

'Berto tried to smooth the remaining lotion on his hands into Jay's skin so he wouldn't get it into his feathers before lifting one hand to smooth over the arch of one wing in a soothing gesture.

"Am I going to have to sit on you to keep them from flying you away?" he teased, though he was actually starting to wonder a bit.

Jay dropped his face between his arms as it heated. He heard some girls giggling. They were saying something too, but it was whispered to one another and Jay didn't speak Portuguese. Well, beyond the basic niceties 'Berto has taught him. And at that, he doubted very much they were saying anything akin to 'Thank you very much for having us.'
