Chase - Before the fashion show
Anna realized, as she changed quickly from her uniform into jeans and a tank top, that she had no idea what the guy she'd just agreed to go pie shopping with looked like. She was pretty sure it wouldn't be all that hard to figure out who he was, though, and she pulled on a hoodie and zipped it, then let Ali know that she'd be back before the fun started, grabbed her keys and wallet, snagged her leather jacket and headed out. Keys dangling from her mouth by the keychain, she pulled her jacket on and adjusted her gloves before hopping over the railing to the stairwell and landing softly on the first floor.

He was one of the new kids, which would make him stand out. Hopefully. And if not, he'd probably find her.

No, but that would take all the fun out of it. At least for Chase. He liked the challenge of trying to put something together, then working through the kinks. It did come in handy with repairs, as well as unfamiliar devices.

"I'm good, thanks," he said. It wasn't that cold. "So what's your power?"

Anna nodded, glad that he'd decided it was warm enough. If he'd turned the heat up much more, she probably would have had to crack a window.

"I, uh, I absorb peoples' memories and abilities through their skin." Officially, her ID said 'life force,' but that was a lot scarier sounding.

It wasn't that bad. Chase was also used to slightly cooler temps, since electronics liked it cooler. Besides, they weren't going to be out that long.

"That's...," he tried to think of a way to describe it. "That kinda sucks. Sorry?"

"Yeah," she agreed. "It does suck. Like, literally." She shrugged as she turned and headed into town. "I have some other stuff too. I can fly and I have super strength, but those were sort of stolen."

Whoa. That had to be one of the worst powers he'd heard. "Well, those are still cool," he said. "Especially flying. Super strength could be good too. Especially when working on an engine."

"Yeah. It helps to be able to pick the whole car up if you need to." That didn't really make her all that much happier to have stolen the power, but at least there were upsides to it.

"I bet," Chase agreed. "Now I kind of want to see you pick up a whole car." What? Things like super strength never got less cool.

Anna looked at him from the corner of her eye, considering the statement. Nodding, she pulled to the side of the road. "Okay."

"Like now?" Chase asked, kind of surprised. Then he shrugged and grinned. "Okay."

"Why not?" Anna shrugged, shutting the car off and popping her door open, sliding out and nodding toward his door. "Might want to get out."

Oh yeah, he was getting out. Almost before she said that. Because it would be much cooler on the outside. "Yeah, okay, ready."

Once he was out of the way, she nodded and pulled her gloves off. It would be easier to get a good grip on the chassis without the gloves. She used her foot to tip the car carefully up onto the wheels on Chase's side, making sure that she didn't tip it to the point where it would just fall on him, and then moved beneath it, stretching to hold on to the chassis, making sure that she was only holding on to things that could actually support the car's weight. She straightened out, pushing it up over her head, and turned both her body and the car to face Chase. "Piece of cake."

"Whoa."

Yeah, that was awesome. Chase stared for a good minute then realized that was probably not as easy as she made it look. "Okay, that was awesome."

"It is pretty awesome," she agreed, nodding. She straightened the car out again and carefully took a knee, easing the car back down onto the road. Once she'd carefully placed it back where she had pulled it over, she opened the door again and slipped in, closing the door and then starting to tug her gloves back on. "So there's that."

"That is totally awesome," he corrected. Because it was. Chase got back in the car and buckled himself back in. "Once again, so glad I transferred. UCLA wasn't all that after three years at Xavier's."

"Which one did you go to?" She finished putting her gloves back on and started the car, checking the road before pulling back out and heading toward the store.

"Seattle," he told her. "Pretty cool school. Not as big as this one. Way too close to home." Chase looked at Anna. "Always been at this school?"

"Yeah, this is the big one." She half-smiled at the too close to home part, then nodded. "Since kindergarten. My parents were part of the founding of the system, so it's kind of a no-brainer that I'd end up here."

Chase nodded. "Makes sense," he admitted. "My parents sent me to fancy boarding schools before I manifested. Or well, before they knew I manifested. Then I didn't even have to tell them to send me to Xavier's. They had the tuition paid for before I woke up the next morning." Of course, that had been his intention for revealing his powers. To get the hell away from them.

"Mine knew I was going to manifest a long time before I actually did." One of the wonderful and sort of creepy details of her mother's powers. "But I'm pretty sure I'd have gone here even if I wasn't going to manifest."

Unless they just flat out wouldn't have adopted her if she wasn't going to manifest, which was possible.

Chase nodded. He didn't know how they'd know that, but then, he didn't know what powers her parents had. "That's cool though," he said. "You've always had a place, you know. Not everybody does."

[info]_canttouchthis_

"Not always," she replied. She hadn't had a place before she'd been adopted... but once she'd had it, she'd had it. "Are you place-less?"

Chase shrugged. "Just haven't found it yet," he dismissed. "Wasn't back in LA. Seattle either. I'll find it someday. And have a good time while I'm looking."

"I don't think that everyone really has a place. I mean, I think of myself as having a couple of places. When I left here, I had another place, and that place was just as important as this place." Maybe it didn't make sense, maybe it did, but either way, she wasn't completely sold on the glories of having a "place."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]_talkback_

When you chose that place yourself, it was different. Chase had a 'place' with his parents, if he wanted to go back to what he'd grown up dealing with. Which he didn't. He was done being his dad's punching bag and his mother's shield. They could domestically abuse each other for the rest of eternity for all he cared. It wasn't like they wanted any more kids after him, so there was nobody else for them to abuse.

"That's cool though," he said. "Not everybody needs or wants the same thing. What's important is you got what you want and/or need." He let out a chuckle and shook his head. "This conversation is way too deep for a pie run."

Anna laughed. "It kinda is, yeah."

"You pick something else," she nodded, glancing at him. "I'm driving."
