Brian
Teddy realized he was in way over his head when he spent nearly half an hour trying to decide what to wear to go visit another student in his dorm room. He stood staring down at a pile of clothing, restless and annoyed with himself, trying to second-guess what would look cool, look natural, look right.

Like there was some kind of actual answer he could stumble across if he just tried hard enough.

"Fuck it," he sighed, grabbing a blue hoodie and tugging it on. He piled everything else on his bed, not wanting to leave a mess for Hank, and grabbed his sketch book, tin of prismacolors, and a hipsack. He kept his head down as he made his way through the dorms, cycling through potential conversations, planning what he could say, and ultimately discarding everything he thought of as he neared the cadet's wing. He'd already come out to the guy--

--he couldn't believe he'd done that; he'd never even said the words before, not even to himself--

--so trying to organize himself into some kind of representation of what he thought Brian might want in a friend seemed disingenuous. He'd tried that with Greg, and look how well that had gone. He'd done it a little with JP, too, and JP left. So. He was going to try to be himself and see how far he went with that. He didn't know why he wanted to be Brian's friend so badly, but he did. Maybe it was because he sensed that Brian needed him.

God, what a stupid thought.

Trying not to flush, Teddy made himself stop thinking and rapped on Brian's door.

"What a pity. I was hoping for a peacock next." Reflexively, he touched the boo-boo bunny to his cheek.

"Maybe for your birthday. When is your birthday, anyway? So I can, you know, plan ahead." He pushed back the desk chair and took a seat, flipping open his sketch pad.

"Not until July." He was pleased that Teddy cared enough to ask. "When is yours?"

"November. Your sister--you said she was your twin? Why doesn't she come to school here?" He thumbed through the pictures, looking for the latest he'd done of Brian. He was not showing him the picture he'd drawn of Brian as a superhero.

"She didn't want to, so they didn't make her." He waved a hand dismissively. "Too busy dying her hair purple and modeling, or whatever thing she's caught up in these days."

In truth, Brian loved Betsy very much, but they were as different as night and day.

He gave a surprised laugh. "She doesn't sound very much like you," Teddy said, tucking up one leg. "Do the two of you get along pretty well?"

"We fight a lot. But she's my twin. We're not the same, but no one understands me better or tolerates me more." Brian sat down on the edge of his bed, carefully placing the bunny on his pillow. "Do you have siblings?"

Teddy shook his head. "No. I probably wouldn't be so awkwardly socialized if I did. It was just me and my mother all my life, and I was encouraged not to get out much. Latch-key kid," he explained. "I think my Mom was overprotective because she couldn't be home for me very much."

"You're not so awkward," Brian replied. "I've seen far, far worse. But you could do worse than have an overprotective parent anyway, I suppose."

"I've gotten better...and worse. But I'm trying. Lemme know if I start trying too hard? Though I guess that'd be pretty weird too, like you were correcting a pet."

He paused so he could stop spinning his wheels, then grinned wryly. "So, are you sure you don't want to find a place for me in your mad scientist schemes?"

"I'll find a newspaper to swat you with too, if you like." He leaned forward, observing Teddy with mock scrutiny, eyes narrowed. "What mad science skills do you have that would benefit my schemes? Consider this an interview."

"I can do anatomical sketches. I have a great mad cackle. I wear a lab coat well. I can do hot blonde nerd?"

He shimmered, then shifting into what he liked to consider his female form--blonde, warm-eyed, pretty the same way Teddy was handsome, like the culmination of a thousand girl-next-door fantasies. "I take orders well and promise to always obey your evil whims."

In her low alto, it almost sounded like a come-on, though there was no way Teddy intended that.

Brian leaned back, taken by surprise. Girl Teddy was. Well. Was gorgeous. And Teddy. But with breasts. Which Brian couldn't help but glance down at quickly.

"Those are...certainly must-haves for this organization," he managed. "But do you have any weaknesses?"

"A classic answer to that question," Brian said with a little smile. "I think I've seen it on several interview how-to guides, and at least one porno."

Teddy laughed and crossed her legs, trying to look coquettish. "Why Mr. Braddock," she purred, and it was very difficult to ignore what had to be the prettiest cleavage Brian had ever seen, "I would do just anything for the position."

The sultry look passed into a bright grin as Teddy pushed back her hair. "Or something like that."

Brian's grin widened, and he let himself take on a lecherous leer. "I'm afraid part of the job description is letting me chase you around the desk each afternoon. Are you up for that?"

"I am speedy as a gazelle," she promised seriously.

Were they flirting? It sort of felt like flirting. JP had accused him of flirting before, when Teddy wasn't aware of himself doing any such thing.

Well. Brian would decide where the line was, anyway, Teddy decided, just going with it. She felt far more relaxed and at ease than she'd had in a long time.

"To paraphrase: oh baby, oh baby, you magnetic stud, you."

She fluttered her lashes. Teddy had watched beautiful girls to learn the way they moved, the way they held themselves, like they knew they were worth all the effort people put into wanting them. He couldn't quite replicate the hard edge many of them had, however. There was something too innately good and quietly introspective for him to truly be a chameleon.

"Oh, I think you'll do very well in this organization, Teddy." His eyes glittered, teasing and overtly flirtatious.

It was fascinating, what Teddy could do. Man or woman, both beautiful and oddly compelling, with a sweet smile that kept Brian from wanting to be angry.
