Brian
Teddy realized he was in way over his head when he spent nearly half an hour trying to decide what to wear to go visit another student in his dorm room. He stood staring down at a pile of clothing, restless and annoyed with himself, trying to second-guess what would look cool, look natural, look right.

Like there was some kind of actual answer he could stumble across if he just tried hard enough.

"Fuck it," he sighed, grabbing a blue hoodie and tugging it on. He piled everything else on his bed, not wanting to leave a mess for Hank, and grabbed his sketch book, tin of prismacolors, and a hipsack. He kept his head down as he made his way through the dorms, cycling through potential conversations, planning what he could say, and ultimately discarding everything he thought of as he neared the cadet's wing. He'd already come out to the guy--

--he couldn't believe he'd done that; he'd never even said the words before, not even to himself--

--so trying to organize himself into some kind of representation of what he thought Brian might want in a friend seemed disingenuous. He'd tried that with Greg, and look how well that had gone. He'd done it a little with JP, too, and JP left. So. He was going to try to be himself and see how far he went with that. He didn't know why he wanted to be Brian's friend so badly, but he did. Maybe it was because he sensed that Brian needed him.

God, what a stupid thought.

Trying not to flush, Teddy made himself stop thinking and rapped on Brian's door.

"I'd ask about pay, but I'm afraid I'd be accidentally treading back into porn territory if I did," she said with a laugh. Yes, they were definitely flirting, Teddy decided, but it was also obviously okay and didn't mean anything. It was just fun.

"Well, your bonus would include fond pats on the ass and glowing compliments on your body, of course. I'm old-fashioned that way."

In the old days, Brian could be something of a flirt, but that had been squashed by sharp words and a bitter attitude. It felt nice, to slip into banter, to tease and smile.

"I do love an old-fashioned man. Will you hold open doors, too, or will this be a strictly dehumanizing-sexist relationship? I'll need to know what to dress for, you understand."

"Of course I'll open doors! They're much too heavy and complicated for your fragile wrists. Also, it'll give me a chance to enjoy the view as you slink past me."

She widened her eyes. "You are so big and strong."

"Oh well, in that case I suppose I should erase some of those muscles I added to your sketch."

Teddy shifted effortlessly back to his male form, grinning.

"That's so fascinating to watch," Brian said, leaning forward again. "The transition's so smooth."

"Sometimes it happens without me having to think about it," Teddy admitted. "Automatically, I mean."

"Having a Frida moment. I was in an accident," he clarified. "A long time ago. I was stabbed through the lung with a shard of metal. Only my lung wasn't there anymore. All my organs shifted out of the way in the blink of an eye, or so the doctor said, so it wasn't lifethreatening. It was just a flesh wound. I healed up in no time."

"You're a wet blanket, aren't you?" Brian laughed, though, and stood to cross the room to his mini fridge. He let his hand brush across Teddy's shoulder as he passed him. "Would you like anything?"

Teddy froze, entire body electrified by the casual touch. He tried to scramble to pull his thoughts together, face flushed red. "Wh-- Oh. No thanks."

Brian shrugged. "Let me know if you do." He pulled out a bottle of sparkling water and twisted off the cap. "I should have offered sooner. I'm a terrible host." He tilted his head back and took a long drink.

"Oh, I'm dork through and through, mixed with a healthy dose of geek. Here, I'll show you this first." He grabbed his sketchbook and thumbed through to one of the comic book pictures he'd drawn--Brian in superhero gear, stark whites and blues and silver, incredibly handsome, heroic, superior, impossible to read. "I decided you were one of the white hats."

"I'm not wearing a hat," Brian said, looking down at the picture with eyebrows raised. Someone actually thought of him like this? It was incredibly flattering.
