Kitchen Section
Moving away from the open area you find a tiny area set up as a kitchen, with a gap between to store the canned food acting as a corridor.

"So this is it, cooking space...can't have it near the the toilets or anything." Sally said softly, suddenly shy.

DP looked around the space, then nodded and dropped his pack on the counter. Digging into it, he pulled out out the small canister of steelcut oats he'd found, and the bag of dried milk, the little baggie of sodium bicarbonate he'd scraped up from a bakery, and the tiny jar of honey. Glancing over his shoulder he asked, "Got a bowl, maybe? I can make it in a bag, but...."

"You won't laugh at me if I tell you I went hunting for crockery?" Sally asked, grabbing a bowl from a cupboard.

He shrugged, taking the bowl and setting it on the counter next to his pack. "Why would I?" He looked around. "....is there water to wash my hands?" He hesitated, then dug out a soft bowl and popped it open, waiting for an answer.

Sally took some bottled water from the side. "It's a processed rainwater...A slightly stolen idea, I just built it."

DP smiled slightly. "What works, works." He set the soft bowl down on the counter and reached for the bottle. Carefully, he poured water over first one hand, letting it drain into the bowl, then the other, before rubbing them together and rinsing them. Then he set the bowl down on the ground for Snap to have a drink as he went back to his cooking.

Carefully, he set up the Sterno can, then portioned out the oats, milk, and other ingredients before beginning to mix in some water. He frowned, then shrugged. "Shame there's no lard left -- these'd be better with a bit of grease in them."

"Perishables ran out a long time ago." Sally admitted. "There's an apple tree in the courtyard, but it isn't the season. I threatened to bake when it was."

DP jerked his head in acknowledgement, and kept working on his oatcakes, carefully patting the fragile dough into shape, then adding a generous dollop of honey to the mixture. Then he balled the dough and patted it flat before spreading it into a pan. Picking up the water, he rinsed his hands again, scrubbing the flour and dough off before patting them dry on his jeans and turning to light the Sterno to fry up the small cakes. Casually, "Y'all should raid a few of the houses 'round about. Riskier than the big warehouses, but more chance of finding lard and oil and such, now...." He glanced at her. "What else needs heated for eating? I can do that now, if you like."

"Well, there's stewing steak for tonight...and raiding houses makes sense...We're just doing the best we can, which isn't great." Sally said softly.

"its better than doing nothing." DP glanced down at the dog who was watching them, ears half flattened. Snap huffed, with a questioning wag of his tail, looking between them, then growled a slightly louder bark. "Sssst! Ssh!" DP looked back at Sally. "...give him the ball, yeah? Or throw it for him or something?" He checked on the cakes, then glanced back at her again. "...and if you want to get that feed, I can start it heating while these fry...?"

Sally grinned, and threw the ball down the corridor created by the boxes, before heading over to pick up four tins of stewing meat and two of carrots. "Not much but it'll do. We have coffee if you'd like?"

Snap bolted after the ball, returning moments later with the green sphere being crushed repeatedly in his powerful jaws. He settled by the corner to enjoy his chew for a few moments, intently attempting to pop the hard rubber. DP grinned, then shook his head at Sally. "Water's fine." He took the tins and looked for an opener and a pot to heat the rations in.

After a moment, he glanced over his shoulder at the others in the room, eyes lingering on Alex for a moment. "....don't get many visitors, then?" Briefly he met her eyes, then checked on Snap before looking at her again. "...friendly or otherwise?"

"Meh, we're waiting for tourist season." Sally joked softly. "And unfriendly, less now..." Sally found a can opener and saucepan. Do you miss the world...as it was I mean?" She asked suddenly.

DP ducked his head and smiled at the tourist season comment, looking away. Then he looked back, questioningly. "You mean -- without the ravening murderous hordes?" He smiled crookedly, and shrugged, "Or do you mean -- full of 'normal' humans, to the point you couldn't go anywhere in the world without hearing some kind of human-made sound, or see some kind of human-made structure?" He opened the tins, and dumped them into the saucepan together, then reached for a fork to break it all up with, avoiding her eyes for a moment.

"It's weird, but just for a second, when you wake up and there's no cars or TV's...It's almost a relief...Like taking a breath you know?" Sally admitted. "But then you feel guilty."
She spoke softly, as if saying it loudly would betray something.
"But then sometimes you go out and you feel guilty for just being left."

DP looked up, sharply, at that. "No." His voice is firm, and stronger than it has been yet. "No. Never feel guilty for surviving -- that's what will get you killed, and that's what'll take everyone else with you." He turned and pointed at the door, jabbing his finger at it firmly. "You might as well walk out there right now, and save Death the trouble of coming to find you, and us the trouble of trying to save you, as to feel guilty about being alive." Snap's head came up and he bounced to his feet to bring the ball over to them, tail wagging happily.

Then, suddenly, as if suddenly aware of how loud and aggressive that sounds, DP flushes and eases back a step, dropping his eyes and turning his attention back to the food, flipping the oatcakes. Looking down, he nodded at Snap, then kicked the ball the dog dropped, sending the dog scrambling after it.

Sally cracked a slight smile. "Us huh?" She dropped away from the wall and came to stand beside him. "You do know you're both welcome to stay with us?"

DP flinched back slightly, unconsciously avoiding contact as she came up next to him, his near shoulder rising in a faint, defensive cringe as his chin dropped and he shifted his weight away. He shuffled the oatcakes on the pan once, then turned and neatly flipped them onto a clean spot on the table to cool. "...I rather got the impression that I was expected to stay." He glanced at her, that crooked half smile flickering into view for a moment before vanishing again into a nervous grimace. "....but I appreciate the invitation." He looked up at her again, briefly, before focussing on the ball Snap had brought back.

He shuffled it once with his feet, then kicked it again, some of the tension in his body easing as the motion put a bit of distance between them. He smiled at her again, shyly, as he leaned against the table.

Snap launched himself at her, leaping for the ball and vaulting off her thighs in an attempt to reach it, ears up and eyes half-mad with delight. Excited, he spun in a circle, barked, once, a high-pitched screech of a bark, then vaulted off her thighs again, harder, teeth clicking just short of the ball.

DP laughed. "I never work alone. Throw the ball, or he'll clip your fingers by accident -- then you'll have deal with his apologies and that's worse!"

Sally laughed softly, vaulting the ball away from her. "I did work alone...I don't think I had long left to live when they found me." The second phrase was slow, like an unwilling admittance of defeat.

DP watched as the dog scrambled after the ball, then took it when Snap returned with it. He spent a moment teasing the dog -- feinting one way, then the other, watching Snap's delighted bounce from side to side to intercept -- then rolled it at him slowly. Snap watched the ball, eyes avid, neck arched, prancing backwards several steps to let the ball roll....then pounced again, snapping up the sphere and chewing hard on it in delight.

DP looked up at Sally, eyes sober. "Its hard to be alone."

That brought a (very brief, but genuine) smile to his face -- then he focused on the food. "Eating tools?" He arched an eyebrow at her. "And do we eat at a table around here, or just find a corner and growl at anyone who comes too close?"

There was a brief, amused flash of challenge in his eyes at the comment. "No...Snap's got us all beat." He nodded, accepting the plates she handed him, and began to portion out the food. Carefully, he gave full portions to all the humans, leaving about a quarter of the meat and carrot mixture in the saucepan, then put a pair of oatcakes on each plate. Picking up the first two plates, he nodded at her. "All right -- where?"
