RP: If I were A Boy
Date: 19 September 1997
Characters: Marietta Edgecombe and OTA
Location: Leaky Cauldron
Summary: Marietta decides it's her turn to have a few drinks.
Completion: Incomplete

Feeling like she was in second place to a Death Eater hadn't done much for her ego. She wasn't pleased at all with the way things were going lately. She kept throwing herself back into work but it wasn't fulfilling like she wanted it to be. She hoped and prayed that this war would end quickly and things could fall back into order. She did not want to have to continue sharing Padrig with anyone. Throwing Muggleborns under the bus wasn’t even worthwhile anymore.

If she were the boy, things would be going differently. She wasn’t the boy though. She was just the really insecure girl who was stuck feeling constantly jealous and angry over the whole situation. She wasn’t in the mood for going home and being around Mister-Friends-With-Death-Eaters at the moment anyways. Getting a few rounds was more her speed.

She slipped into the smoky, over-crowded bar. She hated crowds. She hated people in general. That didn’t change much of anything. She pushed her way through finding a stool at the bar and ordered her first round: A Nimble Quick. It was a girl drink. Subtle but strong. By any hopes, she’d get drunk enough that she could apparate home and by the time she fell asleep wouldn't give a fuck.

What was so great about Lestrange anyways?

Absolutely sick of her own cooking - and craving a bit of fish and chips - Melinda decided a trip to the Leaky Cauldron was in order. It was a bit of a dive, but Tom made the best in the city. Besides, the Leaky was always more fun than the Three Broomsticks, and she'd rather die than attempt eating at the Hog's Head. Merlin only knew if the rumors about the man who owned the place were true.

It seemed crowded tonight, but that didn't phase her. Heading to the bar, where she spotted an open stool, she brightened as she saw someone she knew.

"Marietta! It's been ages since I saw you!" she said, slipping onto the seat.

Marietta had hardly forgotten that Melinda had danced with Pig a few months back. She was a terribly jealous person. She might not let it out publicly but she never forgot when someone crossed a line. As far as she was concerned, Melinda was guilty of breaking the girl code. She offered a polite smile never the less when the other girl slipped into the seat next to her.

Lovely! This was just what she wanted. She would have rolled her eyes if it wouldn't have given her away completely.

"The Ministry keeps me tied up," she said with a polite smile. "What brings you around here? Obviously not the fine food.. I mean who enjoys the food here. It's poisonous!"

Melinda nodded, rolling her eyes a bit. "Tell me about it," she said, shaking her head. "I mean, I barely saw you in passing when I was working on the pamphlets, and of course, I go back to my own job to find enough work for any ten people."

She gave Marietta a look before she shrugged. "Well, the fish and chips aren't bad," she said, trying to get Tom's attention. "Having a bit of a craving, actually."

Placing her order - along with a pint of beer - she turned back to Marietta. "So how are things? I mean, other than busy because I know that since you just said it and all."

Marietta was decidedly close lipped. She had to resist the urge to roll her eyes. She maintained her polite, unmoved face trained. She was not going to be rude no matter how dreadfully she wanted to be. "I'm sure you were just terribly busy," she said. "I mean the majority of people they're hiring these days are completely incompetent." That was why she had so much work to do after all.

She'd rather die than eat anything from here. She was pretty sure Tom spit in the food or did worse things. Maybe it was just her food though. She still wasn't trustworthy of it. If Melinda wanted to eat it, it was her problem. "There is a place up the street that makes fantastic fish and chips. They're cleaning standards are probably much higher... to each their own."

And she focused on her drink again. She grew even more silent when asked how things were. "There really isn't a whole lot to tell. Pig's got his own special projects lately. We eat, sleep and work," she said being decidedly vague. Despite the fact she didn't honestly care, she found it easier to turn the question back on her. "And you? Anything interesting happening with you?"

"All those buggering protection charms people are buying," she said, shaking her head. "People are complaining to us about them, when obviously, they're not going to work."

Melinda raised a brow. "I haven't ever found anything wrong with Tom's cleaning standards." It was a pub- it wasn't like she was going to eat off the floor or anything, but he kept it pretty clean, she thought.

Marietta wasn't telling her too much, but that wasn't too shocking. She never had been very chatty with her. "Not really. Had a party a few weeks back that went well. Other than that, nothing new is happening with me."
