Stephen's portal dilated open in a shower of orange sparks, revealing the area where the cows and sheep were being kept. Michelle, buckler in one hand and sword in the other, stepped through the portal. She was followed closely by Stephen before the portal shrank and vanished. Michelle turned immediately, so that they stood back-to-back. It left her facing the animals and away from most of the island.
Afterward, Michelle could never remember who had first mentioned the animals--but the the stomach-dropping sense of alarm, if not terror, at the thought of the hounds massacring their food animals spread through the crowded infirmary instantly. The buzz of conversation grew much louder as everyone began talking at once. They had gardens, but the loss of the cows and sheep might an irrecoverable loss.
Michelle had made her way through the crowd to Stephen, who met her halfway. "We need to--" she began.
"I know," Stephen said, and as soon as she had her weapons in hand, he'd opened the portal.
Michelle was relieved to see that the animals were still alive. Agitated, frightened, but still alive. The sheep were huddled together for safety, the cows not quite so close, but clearly taking comfort in proximity to one another.
"Will your barrier stop the hounds?" Michelle asked Stephen.
Something tickled her delicate inner sense of danger as Bugs Bunny called it, and she turned to look over her shoulder. The lion's share of the island sprawled before her, sloping away toward the far shore. A number of the black hounds were racing toward the animals--and toward Michelle and Stephen.
"I guess we're gonna find out," she said. She considered drawing her handgun, but she wouldn't be able to get many shots off before the hounds arrived. Better to stick with the weapons in hand.
