TITLE: Where Did It All Go Wrong?
TIME/DAY: January 11, Afternoon
TAKES PLACE AFTER: Everything so far
CHARACTERS: Adam ; Elle
WARNINGS: Adelle smut

It was unlike Adam to do something like this, having no reason to just up and leave without even calling to tell Elle what was going on and where he was. It had been an entire night and an entire day and there was just no word from him. She couldn't even sleep in their own bed, the empty spot next to her being enough to keep her wide awake. The countless messages left on he cell phone stopped when his voicemail became full, denying her of leaving more.

Elle didn't even know who to call, didn't think it would help any if she did. There was high doubt in her mind that someone else knew about Adam's whereabouts where she was clueless, and she didn't want to get anyone else involved until she found him.

She took the streets of New York at daybreak, making it a bit difficult to walk since the cold morning air was almost unbearable to travel in. The color in her face was painted over with a pale surface, her features cold and expressionless as she searched for hours - the afternoon coming so quickly she almost missed it.

The electric blond took a break near the newspaper stand around the corner from where their apartment was located, blue eyes slowly running over the countless magazines that stood lined up in front of it. Nothing was really catching her eye, which was unusual seeing how Elle could stand there for hours just reading up on the world; the gossip.

"Where are you, Adam?" The words slipped when the date on the newspaper reminded her just how long he'd been away, her face scrunching up in that worried manner as she slowly turned to walk back home.

Please.

That word spoken by her made him literally freeze. He started turning his head to look at her, but stopped himself barely in time. "I say a lot of things," he finally told her, his voice bitter.

"Adam, I need you stay. I can help you." She was pleading, trying so desperately to make him stay because if he walked out that door she was going to see that as the end of it. The end of them. She didn't really know what caused his mind too rupture, her thoughts too clouded to pinpoint the one man she knew was responsible.

"Stay so I can fix you."

Like you fixed me.

Oh no. She did not just say that. How many times had he heard Sylar say the very same thing, albeit worded slightly differently. How dare she?

"Do I look like I'm broken?" he asked sarcastically, turning to look at her. "I'm not the one crying on the floor, baby," he reminded her. "See, the difference between you and me? It's simple. I'm a god, and you're weak. Look how fucking dependant you are on something that could never possibly happen."

"Don't you fucking dare say that it didn't happen. It did. I know it did. I lived it where you just forgot about it. You have no idea how badly I'm going to kill whoever did this to you." The Haitian suddenly popped inside of her head, popping out of his Jack-In-The-Box would and it made the light bulb flicker on and how his ability worked - how it was used on her countless of times to make her forget what her father did to her.

"You're not broken? You can honestly say that to me without knowing that you're lying? You couldn't lie to me when you loved me and you can't lie to me now." She attempted to get up finally, using her strong arm to lift her up as she then cradled the one that was sprained.

Wow, she really wasn't giving up. His expression softened just a little as he looked at her, saw she was in pain. "Don't do this," he told her quietly.

"I'm not letting you leave. I can't have you out there when you're not yourself." She finally came to stand fully, letting her arm go which simply flopped lazily to the side; unmoving. Her muscles were tightening on their own accord, making her agonize a bit more as pain radiated through it.

"I'm going to fix you and I need to keep you here to do that." Tough love. Elle didn't want to fight Adam, but he was leaving her no choice if he was going to just get up and walk away. Her stabilized mind had been shattered the moment Adam said he could never love her. She wasn't thinking this all the way through.

"Sweetheart, there is nothing to fix," he assured her with almost casual sympathy. She was pathetic. "Now," Adam added, "don't make me put you down." Because he would if he had to.

"We've been through this before, honey. You can be a good boy that I know you are and listen to me or we're going to have to get our hands dirty again." Electricity was already circling around the digits of her left hand, bringing it up as the sparks surged in the middle of her palm.

"You don't want to do this," he assured her. And then, because he felt sorry for her more than anything, Adam struck out at her, hoping to hit her hard enough to knock her out. He didn't want to deal with her emotionl drama at the moment.

But his hit wasn't as powerful as he'd intended. He'd only just barely gotten his uncle's ability, and he wasn't that great at controlling it yet, so the contact with her skin sent a rush of memories through his mind. He didn't understand them, and he didn't want to. They were lies.

"You stay the fuck away from me," he told her again.

The build up of electricity caused her vision to flutter just barely and that gave him the opening as she didn't see him launch his fist out to strike her. She didn't even have the strength to dodge as she was made the perfect target for his blow

The force of the punch made her hit the wall again, her head bouncing off of it easily which made the feeling worse. She was to the point of unconsciousness when her body toppled forward, the electricity quickly dispersing as she hit the floor with a thump.

There was something about seeing her fall--he almost saw it play out in slow motion. It broke his heart.

Literally.

He felt the pain of it, as if someone were ripping his heart out, and Adam fell back against the wall, sliding to the floor. He stared at her for the longest time, and it wasn't for a while that he noticed he was looking through tears. Adam didn't understand it--didn't want to--but there was a very real part of him that was hurting with her, for her.

Had he really just let Evelyn go? And if he had, then why the fuck couldn't he remember it? Shouldn't he remember something like this? And when would it have even happened? He'd only just gotten to this reality, and yet she seemed to know him better than anyone. He had only met the Elle of his universe once, so this just wasn't possible. He would never give up on Evelyn. Would he?

"Forgive me," he whispered to no one in particular, staring ahead blankly.
