There was something about seeing her fall--he almost saw it play out in slow motion. It broke his heart.
Literally.
He felt the pain of it, as if someone were ripping his heart out, and Adam fell back against the wall, sliding to the floor. He stared at her for the longest time, and it wasn't for a while that he noticed he was looking through tears. Adam didn't understand it--didn't want to--but there was a very real part of him that was hurting with her, for her.
Had he really just let Evelyn go? And if he had, then why the fuck couldn't he remember it? Shouldn't he remember something like this? And when would it have even happened? He'd only just gotten to this reality, and yet she seemed to know him better than anyone. He had only met the Elle of his universe once, so this just wasn't possible. He would never give up on Evelyn. Would he?
"Forgive me," he whispered to no one in particular, staring ahead blankly.
