What can you give a slave who, by law, can own nothing?

He could not leave this room without his father's permission. And he could not imagine going to his father and saying, "Please let me go gather moss so that my slave can have a proper New Year for once."

He waited until his prisoner had subsided to shuddering gasps, and then leaned forward to wipe the blade once more. "We're bards of pain," he said, "and of all the bards in the world, you are the greatest."

Bard of Pain (fantasy novella) - Chapter 1 of 7

([info]digitalmuse13, I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out whether headers were expected for stories posted here. If I guessed wrong, just let me know.)

Cover for Bard of PainIn the battle-weary lands of the Great Peninsula, only one fate is worse than being taken prisoner by the Lieutenant: being taken prisoner if you are the Lieutenant.

As the world's most skilled torturer struggles with his change of fortune, he finds that his fate is intertwined with the destinies of an idealistic army commander, an affectionate prisoner, and a protégé who reveres the Lieutenant's art. . . but is on the wrong side of the conflict.

The beginning of the end for him (or so it seemed at the time) came in the moment that he stepped into the shadow of Capitol Mountain and was assaulted by a stranger.

Ta daaaaa...it's me!

Name: Laughing Muse
Outlets: writing, coloring (usually geometric patterns), coding (yes, you read that right), graphics
Joined because: I've joined two writing-challenge comms, but no writing-inspiration/talk comms. Time to balance the scales a smidge.
Anything currently ongoing?: making icons, doing fiction challenges in two IJ communities...oh, yeah. And preparing to move 1200 miles, towing all my stuff. And with three cats. That's a different kind of "creative".

Mod Update

Check it out! If you look to the left, below the Search Entries box, you'll see there's a link underneath Member Showcase. I have organized all the new bio entries people have posted into one web page and linked to it, to easily access everyone's bio! If you're a member and don't see your bio, its because you never posted one - make sure to!

Works page should be up soon, but that one's a bit harder, as I need to go over each member's profile and get links. If you want to make it easier, feel free to post the links you want showcased in a comment here. :-)

Keep on posting as well! There are a couple prompts you can answer, or just post whatever you feel like; pictures, fiction, non-fiction, questions, requests... the list goes on. Its hard to come across a topic that isn't allowed here.

Have a great weekend everyone. Happy musing!

An attempt to summarize )

web design

Today I'm posting as a member, not a mod...

I have a creative question, and this is the comm for it. I'm working on my personal website, but I'm having a bit of a roadblock when it comes to layout. Can anyone recommend some websites with awesome designs and layouts? Personal websites are preferred. I don't want to copy, I just need some inspirational spark. :-)

mod post

Hi everyone!

Glad to see this comm is growing so well. I know I've only posted one prompt so far, and it wasn't the best, but I'm gathering some prompts together to start with soon.

It seems like we have an overabundance of writers here - which I'm not complaining about, as I'm a writer too - but if there's anyone here who isn't a writer at all, let me know, so I know to include other prompts. If it turns out that everyone here is a writer, I can be a bit narrower with my prompt ideas.

Also, I will be putting together the Member Showcase this weekend, so if anyone has a site they really want featured that I might not see, comment here and let me know. I'm also going to try and organize all the member intro posts into a Member Bio list panel, so watch for that too, so new members can get to know the existing ones.

I will be gone for a good portion of this weekend without internet access, it being Labor Day Weekend in the States and all. I should be home by mid-day Sunday, and will catch up on everything then.

I'm hoping to have prompt number two up by the end of next week, as we have a lot more members now to participate. Also, if anyone has ideas for future prompts, contests, challenges, or -thons, let me know as I'm taking suggestions now while in the planning stages. I know the end of the year is always really busy with these things and don't want to overload anyone - of course, everything is always optional - but if you really feel strongly that we should wait a couple months before starting anything comprehensive, let me know.

Otherwise, I hope everyone is having a good week! Any questions, comments, or suggestions are always appreciated, and don't be shy to start posting any work on your own! That's what we're here for, after all, isn't it?

Newcomer Survey

name: Bill Hartwell

age: 45

creative outlets: I write. And write. And write some more. And, by the way, I write. And when I need to get away from the keyboard, I make soap or candles.

why I joined this comm: The description made it appear to be a good group for supporting writers.

current work: Let's see....I'm currently doing a crossover between my own universe and Sailor Moon, a Harry Potter fanfic, and a list of other projects that I work on in rotation (when I hit a block in one project, I switch to another one and work on it while my subconscious works on clearing the block).

anything else?: I have two stories out to publishers right now, am waiting for responses on both. Had a Killer Frog winner back in 1993 (Honorable Mention, got me a year's subscription to Scavenger's Newsletter), am polishing up a story to submit to Writers of the Future, and am in the middle of editing a novel before submitting it to Baen.

intro

love reading the posts here as well as the prompts. looking forward to getting to know everyone.

haven't come up with a bio but my interests are on my website here... www.prettyfreckles.com.

i'm a writer and sometime consultant in mundane life. this venue is for me to write and read fanfic & other things my editors wouldn't necessarily approve of. you know, we all have to have *some* fun in life, and alter egos can allow us more of all that.

Greetings, everyone. As you can tell by the start of this entry (and from the title itself), I'm new to Striking_Muse. I caught sight of the "asylum" via a promo and thought I'd give it a try.

To get some actual creativity going, here's a prompt for all the writers of the comm!

Write a bit about a good thing gone bad.

For any artists, photographers, or anyone who isn't a writer, post a favorite piece you've done within the past month.

Tag all entries in response to this post as "prompt1". Thanks!
