[ERIN WINCHESTER]

Your Uncle Dean is awake. Would you like to go visit him after school today?

[DEAN WINCHESTER]
Hey, you. How are you settling in? Want to grab a beer or three tonight?

[SAM WINCHESTER]
I don't think it's a good idea for me to come by the hospital anymore now that your brother is awake. If I drop Erin off to see him after school, would you be able to give her a ride home?

[DENNY DUQUETTE]
Hello again. So it's becoming increasingly clear to me that I really need something to focus my attention on while I'm here. I do better when I have a project to occupy myself. But the project I want to take on is huge and it would be nice if I had a partner. Since you need something to focus on as well, I thought I'd see if you'd be interested. How would you feel about helping me build and organize a youth center here in town? After school programs, tutoring, counseling, sports and activities, etc. I'm even considering making sure we have a few rooms available for kids who show up here without family, so they have a safe place to stay until a guardian can be found for them.

I have the funds to take care of everything, I'm really just looking for a partner to help me manage and oversee everything. Also, it wouldn't hurt to have someone a little older around for meetings. Some people see the 23 year old blonde girl and assume I have no idea what I'm talking about.

No hard feelings if you aren't interested, I just thought I'd offer.

Tell you what. How about we leave this as an open invite? Things can always change and maybe a little later on down the line you might change your mind. If that ends up being the case, I'd still love the chance to have you help out. You could make a really positive difference in a lot of people's lives.

I appreciate you reaching out. I do. I just don't think it's going to make a difference. But if you'd rather leave it open that's fine with me.

I'm just a leave things open kind of girl. Optimistic in the face of pretty much everything. :)

How do you feel about visitors?

That's not a bad thing. Someone ought to be optimistic. I used to be the optimistic guy.

I'm not opposed to visitors but I don't know that I'm exactly good company.

Maybe you'll be that guy again one day.

Good. Then I'm going to come by and visit with my daughter. I think you'll like her.

Maybe. I like how optimistic you are. You weren't kidding about being so.

Okay. I still don't think I'm good company but I won't turn you down.

I never kid about my optimism.

You don't have to be good company. No expectations here. You don't even have to talk if you don't want to. But I am going to need to know what kind of cookie is your favorite.

I think that might be the first actual smile I've had in a long time.

I like oatmeal raisin, most people say chocolate chip but I like oatmeal. Really, I like any kind of oatmeal cookie.

Look at that, the power of Jess is working already. ;) One of the many benefits of my friendship.

I like oatmeal too. And not to brag, but my homemade cookies are pretty amazing. Erin and I will come visit you this afternoon after she gets out of school. In the meantime, I've got some cookies to bake.

It definitely is a perk. I thought I might have forgotten how to smile.

I think I've seen her on the net. That John Winchester guy looks like me, apparently. I haven't got much to do here but read.

Cookies will be a nice treat.

Well I'm glad you managed to remember. I'll see if I can't help keep you in practice.

Yes, John Winchester is her grandfather. She's my little sunshine. If you can resist smiling around her, we'll have our work cut out for us. Would you like some more books to read too? I can stop in at the library before I come by.

I can definitely see that being a possibility.

Actually, that would be great. I'm kind of on a western kick right now. In my youth I wanted to be a cowboy. But I never really had a knack for horse riding, so alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Well would you look at that. That almost sounds like optimism.

Of course! Have you ever read Hondo? Or True Grit? Those are two of my favorite westerns. I love horse-back riding. Maybe once you're out of the hospital and it warms up, we can see if they have any stables here in town. I'll bet I can help give you some pointers.

Almost being the key word.

I haven't. My favorite is Lonesome Dove. I first read that when I was in my late 20s at a hospital, most of the books I've read have been during hospital stays.

Hmmm, I might be able to let you teach me how to ride.

Baby steps. I can be patient. :)

Oh! Yes! I love Lonesome Dove. I read that a few years ago. And then watched the miniseries afterward. If you like that one, I think you'll definitely like the other two. I'll make sure to grab both of them for you. I'm sorry to hear so much of your time has been spent in the hospital. I'm sure that couldn't have been easy. I think I've spent more time at the hospital in the last week than I have in years and it's exhausting.

I'm an excellent teacher. You'll be in great hands.

I have found that that is a trait more often found in women than in men.

I loved it. I haven't read the sequels yet, never managed to get my hands on copies of them. I didn't see the miniseries, I'm more of the mind that the book is always better, so I didn't want them to ruin the book for me. I have spent most of my life in hospitals, more than any home I've ever had. It is exhausting and depressing.

Maybe that could be arranged.

So you're saying you're not very good at being patient? ;)

The sequels were all right, not as good as the first. But still worth reading. I'll see if I can find them for you too. And actually, I found the miniseries to be a worthwhile watch. Obviously not as good as the novel, but still decent. It's your heart, right? That's why you've been in the hospital so much?

I'll keep my schedule open just in case.

No, I've never been a patient man. It's never been my strong suit.

Maybe I'll catch it one day. But I haven't really seen a lot of movies based on books, they always tend to leave something important out. It's not something that I have ever been interested in. Yeah, it's always been my heart. I was born with a bad one. Once I got past 18. which I never expected to get to, I stopped telling my parents when I was in the hospital, I spent so much time there I didn't want to interrupt their life.

Sounds like a good idea.

Well then today's your lucky day. I'm very used to dealing with impatient men.

I agree. But since this one was a mini-series, they had a more time to fit in all the necessary elements. You stopped telling your parents? Oh, Denny. I'm so sorry. That sounds really lonely.

I don't doubt that for a minute.

It was what it was. I didn't want them to have to worry about me. Plus I spent so much time in the hospital it just..... I just didn't see the point of them being there that often.

Well I hope you don't mind me stopping in to spend time with you. Because I hate to break it to you, but there's not really a lot of places to hide out here in Storybrooke. You're kinda stuck with me coming to hang out with you.

I suppose I don't really have much of a choice. That's how it is these days. I have no life to speak of and I am stuck in a hospital.

I haven't actually been around town yet but I know from scuttlebut that this town is small. I came from Seattle so this is all new to me.

You want to see some pictures? I have a ton on my phone. It's actually a really adorable town, so I took a bunch of shots of it when I first got here and started exploring.

I don't know. It feels like I'm never going to get out of here, and if I see pictures it just might hurt more than it helps. Kind of like torturing an alcoholic with beer or something.

Whichever you decide. If you think you might want to see them, though, I'll be happy to share. What's actually keeping you in the hospital right now, if you don't mind my asking? You had a heart transplant to replace the bad one, right? Have there been post-op complications?
