Who: Jack and Hemingway
Where: The diner
What: Catching up
When: Today
Rating: TBD
Open: To Amy and Abi
Status: Ongoing

Jack had agreed to meet up with his father now things had calmed down enough that he was happy to leave Amy. Yes he knew damn well his girlfriend could handle herself, but it didn’t stop him worrying.

It had taken all he had to wait for his father to actually show up before he grabbed some food. Apparently chaos worked wonders for his appetite.

"You didn't know. My girlfriend inherits the title of lord protector." Jack laughed. "And yeah, if it helps...OK you do know Amy's not human right?"

"That is a hell of a title," he commented. He realised he didn't know very much about her at all. It was good, now their relationship was repaired, to be able to just share things again, to talk to each other. "I... no, I don't think I did know that. Not that it's overly shocking considering the island."

"Her father is a Therian, her mother's a magic pony, she can turn into a black panther, like her dad." Jack replied conversationally.

Ernest did give him a look like he'd just sprouted an extra head, but that was force of habit from his human-centric little world. This Jack had grown up here, it was the norm. "What's a Therian?" he asked.

"A person who can shift into an animal, also your grandchildren, if Amy and me decide that." Jack replied

"Ah, right," he nodded. It wasn't as alien a concept as it first sounded - he'd clearly become an islander when that didn't make him freak out, but rather made more sense. He beamed at his son; of course, he knew Jack loved the girl and had told her as much, but this was particularly revealing. "She really is the one, huh?"

"I think so. I know I'm not all that lovable Papa. Growing up on shifting sands screws you up, here in particular. Waking up not knowing who or what life was going to be every day...is going to be, it's a hard way to be a kid, especially with no protection, but she gets it, and loves me anyway," Jack replied.

Ernest was surprised to hear him say he wasn't lovable, and there was probably a slight flicker across his expression, although he held in the need to contradict for the moment. It was more important to listen. There was plenty he failed to understand, especially because his Jack had had a very different life, far away from this place. Sometimes he was guilty of forgetting the differences.

"Good... you deserve someone like that."

"I worry she deserves better...and that her dad can literally eat me if he agrees," Jack admitted

"She loves you. And you love her, truly. I don't think anyone can hope for more than that," he assured him. "But you know... try not to piss him off," he added.

"I'll do my best," Jack grinned, before his face settled to seriousness again. "How are you and Abi?"

Ernest thought about it for a moment, and then chuckled softly. "Good. Honestly, it's all-" he pointed to his temple, indicting that he was just making up problems where there were none. "If anything, she's probably sick of me following her about like a lost puppy these days."

"I'm sure if she knows why she won't mind," Jack replied. "And if you think it's real, the best thing to go with in this place is not to automatically write it off.

"You really think it's possible? To alter the future?" he queried. He'd considered it; maybe she'd come back for a reason, as a warning to him.

"Pop," Jack raised his eyebrows. "Think about who you're talking to and where you are."
