Marta just rolled her eyes and sat down at the dinner table once more. "If you can't remember how you're injuring yourself, sweetheart, I think it's time you took a break. We have enough batteries to last at least a day, don't we?"
Jake had been listening, right up until Marta started asking if either of them had seen lions anywhere on the island, and then he heard something outside. His ears swivelled to try and pinpoint the oddly-familiar snuffling noise he could just about make out. Leaning over, he left what remained of the bread on top of one of Marta's books and turned round to look out the window. There was definite movement out there, he could hear it, but he couldn't see too far out because of the light from the fire and the handful of lights scattered round the place.
"You hear that?" he asked quietly as he reached back over to the table and put a book over Marta's reading light, and she stopped talking instantly. She'd been around both of them long enough to know when to let them do whatever needed to be done.
