Maryanne had given herself until after Tim was tucked away in the hospital bed before she broke down. She was fairly sure the only people who knew what her children meant to her were her spouses. Not that she felt that anyone's children meant any less to them, but she was sure that none of them knew that they would out live them. Besides Steve. She sat in the chair, her hands covering her face as she wept. Enough so that the tears ran down her arms. Fortunately she was able to keep quiet. She'd had much too much practice with quiet crying through her life. But never had she cried so much. Fortunately Sophia had dug her up some scrubs to wear. She wasn't sitting there bare, crying enough that she didn't hear Tim wake. Until he croaked, his voice painfully hoarse. "Momma?" Tim wasn't sure when he passed out. He didn't remember getting to the hospital. He didn't remember the casts being put on his legs, he didn't remember bones that had needed to be set. He did remember getting each and every cut, bruise, and scrape. He didn't remember much of conversations that made his throat ache as if he'd screamed for days. All that didn't matter, though, as his Mother sat beside him crying her eyes out. All without a sound. When she lifted her head, it was clear to him that she'd wept for a long while. Instead of watch her heart break again, when he spoke more, he simply waved her over. Knowing she was light enough, lithe enough, that she wouldn't hurt him "My baby." Maryanne whispered as she eased into the bed beside him. Fingers soothing over his battered face. Light enough that a feather would have been envious. She still hadn't been able to still the tide. But she was able to keep him dry. |
