The pains had actually started in the morning, but she ignored them. It was more like the dull ache she'd been having for months and there was at least an hour between them. So she just went about her day, figuring it was no big deal. She wasn't going to miss Tim's wedding, after all. Shortly after lunch they started to get a little bit more uncomfortable, but still tolerable. She just rubbed her belly and told her sons it would be okay and continued with getting ready for the wedding. She'd had worse cramps than what she was feeling and could handle it without a problem. As the day progressed the pains got a little bit stronger, but they were still a good 45 minutes apart or so. She just ignored it. She'd actually managed to make it through almost the entire ceremony without drawing attention to the fact that she was in pain. She kept quiet even though they were getting stronger, just rubbing her belly and taking slow, deep breaths. She was not going to draw attention to herself. Not today. She could just slip out the back when the ceremony was done and quietly get herself to a hospital and then the attention would still be where it belonged. On Tim and TJ. She was very thankful that they were outside when her water broke. As soon as the ceremony was finished and everyone was ushered inside, Rachel kept walking through the White House to the front. She was about to say something when a contraction hit and she grabbed the arm of the closest secret service agent. "Ma'am, are you okay?" He asked. Rachel could only shake her head until the contraction passed. The agent looked her over. "Are you in labor?" "Yes..." She managed when the pain finally subsided. She kept her hand on his arm, though, her other hand on her belly. "We'll get you to a hospital, just stay calm." The man went into action, getting on the radio. "Do you think you can walk? We need to get a little further down the driveway..." There were a lot of cars parked out front. Rachel took a deep breath again and then nodded. "Yeah, I think so." The agent put an arm around her for support as they started walking. |
