There was no reason to be nervous. There was no reason to be nervous. That was what Abi had told herself constantly ever since she'd slipped the last note under his door the previous night. Inviting him to her home for dinner, even without Charlie, was a step. She'd gotten her baby boy off to stay with Peggy and her family for the night, trying not to be teary as she said goodbye to him. Not that it would have mattered, but saying goodbye even for the night was difficult and made her feel guilty. Abi had to remind herself that before Hemingway turned up, she'd spent every night and every day as Charlie's mom. She deserved a little break and a little happiness, didn't she? It wasn't like it was for long.
After saying goodbye to him and thanking Peggy after lunch, Abi headed back to her place to tidy and clean up both the apartment and herself. She dug through her old clothes, trying to find something until she came across a dress from her skater girl phase, a dress she'd loved at 21 when she'd been legal to drink and had gone clubbing across the state for about a week. That had been a wild time. She was glad it still fitted and - with dinner cooking slowly on the stove and dessert in the fridge - all Abi had to do was wait nervously for Hemingway to show up.
She hoped he'd show up. The letters were working perfectly but it was difficult when she hadn't seen him for five days. It felt like longer and they had had so much fun the past weekend... she wondered if they'd ever have it again. Plus Kat had kinda freaked her out a bit, talking about men and love and that stuff. She just wanted easy, that was all. Abi wanted fun and easy.
That excited feeling in her stomach felt like it was going to make her sick if he didn't turn up.
