Mary Ellen braced herself too. She'd seen enough bone settings and other procedures to know what to expect and it didn't usually bother her, but as soon as she'd started helping with patients, the doctors had always made sure no one worked on any of their loved ones unless they absolutely had to.
Once it was all over she'd already set her fork down and reached over to hand her dad a bottle of water, offering it to his good hand silently.
