Mary was glad to see her dad cooperating at least a little bit. Then again, Peggy had a way of commanding attention and getting people to follow her orders even when they didn't want to. And she was usually right about what they needed anyway.
Yet, despite knowing all this, part of her still wanted to rebel when the food was put in front of her. She hadn't eaten much since Max disappeared and her dad left, but she still didn't feel hungry. But when her dad urged her to eat to, she was truly doomed. She picked up the fork and started in on the food. As usual, Peggy's cooking was amazing, and as soon as she started eating, her stomach kicked in, and while she wasn't scarfing the food, she was no longer picking at it either.
