Who: Finn and Lacey
Where: Maryanne's Vittles
What: Finn's arrival
When: After this
Rating: Low
Open: To people who might venture into the diner
Status: ongoing.

Finn wasn't sure what to expect really. Not after feeling the sharp point of Clarke's blade against his ribs, and closing his eyes to hide his fear, and to surround himself with something good. Her. Her whispers that everything would be okay, the smell of her hair... And then it was suddenly all gone. The weight in his arms from being tied was gone. The feel of the sharp blade piercing his skin, gone. The rumble of unhappy grounders, gone. When he opened his eyes to find out what had happened, to get his bearings on what had gone wrong, to be sure no one had snuck up behind Clarke and knifed her to stop what she'd been doing... He found himself surrounded by buildings. Buildings like he'd only seen in old videos, and pictures. Things that had been destroyed, by nuclear war, or nature almost one hundred years ago. He let the awe capture him. At least for a little bit.

He still had the guilt to deal with, now that the rest seemed gone. He still had to live with what he'd done, and until this moment he hadn't really had time to catch his breath and actually deal with... everything. Still he locked away everything for now. To deal with when he had time alone to do it.

Finn let his nose lead him, the moment he saw the diner. Pushing the door open, he groaned to hide the growl his stomach was likely to make. "Oh man. I really think I have died and maybe, maybe, gone to heaven. What is that?" He asked.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Lacey." Finn followed after her. Taking a seat with a smile, at the table she brought him too. "What do you have?" He didn't want to ask for something she didn't already have prepared.

Lacey smiled back. "Ah..I thought you wanted to try the prime rib. But I can bring you a menu if you'd prefer. Custom orders are possible too." She gave a small chuckle and added "Usually they're possible. Occasionally I have a customer from a world with foods I'm not familiar with."

"Oh I do. I meant for the drinks. The prime rib smells too good to ask for anything else." Finn chuckled. "Or you could just surprise me. I'm pretty sure everything I've had to drink is pretty different compared to what you have." Space wasn't good for just anything, after all.

"Oh, of course." Lacey gave a small laugh at her mistake. "We have water, juice, lemonade, pop, smoothies, milkshakes, coffee, tea, iced tea, milk, hot chocolate...anything sound good?"

"Oh a whole lot of it sounds good. Um, but lets go with coffee. I know coffee." Though like the alcohol on the ark it had been rare. And he'd had enough teas to choke a horse. Though he had been tempted to ask for hot chocolate.

"Coffee it is. How do you take it?" Lacey asked.

"Black would be perfect." From his seat he looked around the place a little more than he had. It was definitely an interesting place. The whole city was. It wasn't anything like he had ever seen before. And likely not anything he ever would see.

"I'll be right back." Lacey said, walking to the kitchen and pouring him a hot cup. She watched him as she walked back with the coffee and wondered if he was taking in the surroundings. "Is this place different than the diners where you're from?" She asked as she set the mug down in front of him.

"There weren't any diners where I'm from. Just a couple of big mess halls in the Ark, and nothing when we were sent down to the ground." They'd had to find for themselves. Something he had been rather good at, especially on his own. Finn wrapped his hands around the mug and lifted it to his face to take in the scent. He could barely remember the last time he'd had a cup.

"The Ark?" Lacey asked. The term instantly conjured up two images -one of animals on a boat and the other of scenes from an Indiana Jones movie that Brent had her watch. Not being religious, she knew little about either ark.

"Like a boat?" She asked. It made slightly more sense than the other option, if it had mess halls on it.

"No it was twelve space stations that had been combined into one giant space station because the thirteenth got obliterated while a couple of the others could only watch." Unity day. What a joke. "I should probably mention that I'm from ninety-seven years into the future." Finn had checked the date on his phone. He knew he'd some how gone back to before nuclear war started. But that was another one of the things that he was tossing back into his mind for later.

Lacey smiled. Lately, it seemed like everyone she met had just stepped out of a science fiction movie. "You're not alone. There are others here from the future. Different versions of the future at that. Not me, though. I'm from a few years in the past, 2009."

"Well that's not too far back." Finn smiled, taking a sip of his coffee after blowing across it. He groaned softly. It was good. Probably the best coffee he'd ever had.

"Yes, I think I was lucky in that way." Lacey replied and then glanced to the kitchen when a timer sounded. "I'll be right back." She said before returning to the kitchen.

Finn nodded, "I'll be right here." he added almost cheeky with it, and proceeded to nurse his coffee. Savoring the flavor as if he'd never get the chance again.

Lacey returned to the kitchen and took the time to make sure that Finn's meal was up her standards. She then plated a meal for herself as well; she used slow times in the diner to have her lunch. She walked back to the table. "Do you mind if I join you?" She asked as she set his plate down.

"I was actually hoping you would." Finn was sure it was rude, but couldn't help himself. He leaned forward and sniffed the plate. The smell of the food alone was godly. He was pretty certain he'd never smelled anything so good in his life.

"Great." Lacey sat down across from him. She didn't mind that he smelled his plate; the expression on his face told her that he was appreciating his food. "So does everyone in the future live in space?" She asked before she begin to eat.

"We thought so. It wasn't until me and the others got dropped to the surface that we found out otherwise." Finn could resist no longer taking up the utensils he cut into the prime rib. Shivering slightly he slipped it into his mouth and a groan vibrated in his throat. It tasted so much better than he thought it would.

"The surface of Earth?" Lacey asked. After all her time on the island, she'd realized that sometimes she had to clarify such things. She smiled as he enjoyed his food. It was nice, made her feel appreciated.

Wiping his mouth with the napkin at hand, Finn nodded. "Yeah. There were ninety-nine other delinquents like me that got dropped to the surface. The Council wasn't sure that the surface was livable after all the bombs, it wasn't really supposed to be for one hundred years, but I guess they'd say they didn't really have a choice. The ark was running out of resources." Food hadn't really been a problem, but air had been.

He cut into the meat again and took another bite, this time he was able to keep from groaning, but the taste was just as good as the first. Heaven, pure heaven. "But you know. After this. I'm about ready to say I'm actually dead, and this is heaven. I've never tasted something so good." He knew it was bad manners to talk around his food, but he did his best to hide what was in his mouth.

Lacey wondered what he meant by delinquent, but decided not to ask. Even if he did have a criminal record, it should be left behind. The island offered everyone a clean slate. "That sounds horrible. Bombs and lack of resources. We never had bombs back home. And if anyone was hungry or needed something like clothes or shelter, we'd find a way to help them." She supposed that her near perfect life was the benefit of being from a family sitcom, and that was another thing she wouldn't comment on. It would be too much to explain that some people were from fiction, to a newcomer on his first island day.

Lacey smiled brightly. She did enjoy a compliment. She liked to think she excelled at everything. "Thank you. You'll have to try dessert when you're done."

"I wasn't around when they went off. I'm not even sure my grandparents were." Finn shrugged. He'd never met them. "But yeah, wasn't exactly the best growing up. Everyone went through it though. Unless you were part of the privileged." He hadn't but it didn't bug him too much anymore. "I did give a lot of my rations to Raven. So there was that."

Finn started to take another bite when she mentioned dessert. "I'll try to leave room." He teased.

"I think that might be something many worlds have in common. The have and the have-nots." Lacey commented and then asked. "Raven was a friend of yours?"

Lacey chuckled. "Good." People didn't always indulge in dessert at the diner. She suspected it was because of the bakery. It was nice to have a new person around, giving her the opportunity to show off her culinary skills.

Finn had to swallow thickly when she asked about Raven. Though he nodded. "More than that actually. She lived in the quarters next to mine. Her Mother was an addict and she would sell their rations for extra meds, and moonshine. So I would share mine with her." He had loved her until earth. Until Clarke.

Now he'd never see either of them again. "Mind if I ask what you have?" He carved off another bite and stuffed it in his mouth before he could say too much.

Lacey nodded, though she couldn't truly relate. The biggest addictions faced in Dog River were to television and caffeine. "That was kind of you."

Lacey smiled. "I have gingerbread macarons with eggnog buttercream. And the reverse, eggnog nutmeg macarons with a gingerbread filling."

Finn shrugged. "I couldn't let her starve." He'd been kind then.

At the sound of the delights he groaned softly. "Is it okay to try both?" He murmured around the prime rib.

"It's definitely okay." Lacey replied. As much as she missed her friends back home, the way Finn and others on the island appreciated her food was a welcome change.

Stuffing the very last bite into his mouth he settled back from the plate, leaning into the seat, with a satisfied groan. "That was fabulous. Better than I've ever had in my entire life." Though that wasn't saying much, since he was only eighteen.
