He had actually been fine. Or he thought, anyway. He was able to lock the emotions down. When the fog started it was an easy choice to take everyone through a door. Marian had enjoyed seeing Nottingham even though they hadn't been there for all that long. Hansel really liked getting to see what had become of his home town. And the kids loved the scenery. He'd been able to focus on them and forget about the sadness that had come their way not too long ago. Just being a happy family was enough. When the tree appeared, it wasn't really all that bad either. He even smiled a little. He thought about Gretel and how she would have loved the tree, but that was it. He'd gone through the day and everything was fine. The kids were in bed and Marian was taking a shower. He was going through their suitcases and putting things away. They hadn't completely unpacked when they came back. He opened a drawer and stopped mid motion. Sitting there in the drawer was a little pink dress meant for a newborn. He picked the dress up and just stared at it for a moment. He'd bought it shortly after he'd come to his senses and realized that Marian would never be unfaithful to him. He'd been so excited at the thought of actually being a father. Having a child that really was biologically his. And then everything fell apart. Hansel sat down on the bed, still holding the tiny dress in his hands. He didn't even realize he started crying until a tear fell onto his hand. |
