Life returned to him with a rattling gasp. Although he hadn't been aware of the knitting together of flesh and bone, he was aware now of the blinding pain. Of the dust in his chest and the crawlers in his belly. He coughed and spluttered and retched in the dirt beside him and when he was done he lay back in the dirt and allowed his senses to adjust. Once the light morning sky had almost stopped spinning he sat up, sending his new view of the world into a spin once more. This time the sensation dissipated more quickly, though, and he was able to take in some of his surrounds before squeezing his eyes shut. Aside from the dirt he'd woken up in, there was grass. Amidst the grass there were markers and a nearby stone building he recognised as a church. That was when he closed his eyes again - trying to draw on anything that might hint at where he was. There was nothing. He didn't know where this was, how he'd come to be here or anything that had happened to him before this moment. This was cause for confusion, frustration and fear. He slid back in the dirt and brought his legs up so that he was in a sort of foetal position, and he remained there until something else took over. Eventually it did. He wasn't sure if it was hunger or thirst or something else entirely, but he pulled himself out of the dirt wilfully. Perhaps it was just survival instinct - he would need those things. Food, water, shelter, warmth. Or perhaps it was the desire to know what had happened, even though that scared him. Everything scared him, but he took that step anyway. Then the next, and soon he had made his way out of the graveyard and into the street. He tried to take in as much as he could as he went, but it only served to confuse him further. Was the world always this quiet? He bumbled around the street looking for a sign of life or anything that might help him. |
