Who: Mitchell and Maryanne
Where: Roof top of apartment building No. 1
What: Talking
When: Saturday morning
Rating: Middle?
Open: If you’ve got a reason… :-)
Status: Unfinished
The weather wasn’t as dark as it had been the last two days. Maybe because of that Mitchell’s mood was lighter. He was convinced that it was just a matter of days till Annie would show up. Maybe a week. And even if she wouldn’t, he could wait. He would wait. He wasn’t sure if his sanity was stable enough to make it through that time.

Mitchell wrapped his jacket around him as the wind picked once again up. George was miserable as well. But right now, Mitchell wasn’t able to see past his own misery. They had no control over anything. It was the train all over again. Not as crowded, not as weird but essentially the same. With dinosaurs. And books. Loads of books. Who could ever read so many books? He had started to read one of them. Boring story called "Claudia Herness". Most of the time it was about shopping, cooking and cleaning the house.

Mitchell nodded. He didn't quite understand how that made seeing them die any easier. Maybe it was just something good, something human he could do. Be there for others, help. It made him feel better, not good, but better.

A frown was directed at Maryanne. They couldn't be seriously having this conversation. "Ten human kids in a mountain lion, seriously? Don't let Green Peace get you." They would probably declare it a new furry human race or something. Use it as proof that humanity and animals were deeply connected. Her last comment made him laugh. "You are one of those women, huh? The kind that believes that making men uncomfortable is a sport."

"If... you weren't vampire, you and I would have never met." She pointed out. How likely would he have come out of the war if he wasn't one? Sure the train could have pulled him from it, it had pulled people from earlier times. But he wouldn't have met George, or Nina, or Annie.

"It's the only way I could think of and be able to walk around. Or you'd have to come see my belly and me otherwise. Cause I wouldn't be able to leave the bed. I mean jeez did you see the octomom? Or John and Kate plus eight." Maryanne did a full body shudder. Two would be a little much. His comment made her snicker though. "No I'm not. You maybe, but not other men." The horror of multichildren gone for the moment.

"I know," Mitchell mumbled, trying to throw her a thankful smile. It failed and instead he started playing with his gloves, back hunched over slightly. He knitted the material, tugged at the corners of it. If he weren't a vampire, so many other people would still be alive. He would be dead by now, yes. But life he would have had would have been worth it.

He paused and glanced at her. "No, never saw them," he replied sceptically and his tone clearly said that he was glad he hadn't. "Aww, Maryanne. You know how to make me feel special." His eyes sparkled with mirth. Jesus, was he grateful for a few doses of harmless banter.

Maryanne knew what he was going through, and rather rehash everything he already knew. She simply slapped his hands apart, lightly, once his hands parted she stepped between them. Wrapping her arms around his neck. Simply because he was her friend. And she didn't doubt he needed one. She needed one. And she didn't expect him to judge her no matter how fluffy she'd got.

"You are special." She was sincere, and while it wasn't quite another moodswing it was nearly so. Cause she went from teasing him, to simply resting her chin on his chest. "I'm kinda scared Mitchell. And not much scares me."

It felt good. The hug. Feeling someone else so close. He had needed it more when he was ready to admit. Comfort, just saying I'm here. It was a blessing.

Mitchell slung his arms around her, pressing her to his chest. It seemed that she had needed it just as much as he had. "Yeah, me too." He was scared. Not about babies. That was no option he had for his future. But everything seemed uncertain here. They got tossed from one place to the other and now... now Annie was gone. She wasn't here. And there was this tiny little doubt that nagged and nagged, telling him that she might never be here. What if he lost himself? He already felt like going crazy.

Maryanne knew without having to ask what worried him. Or some of it anyway. "You know that promise I made you on the train, still stands right?" One hand stroked his shoulder, while the other thread in his hair. She was trying to comfort him as he comforted her. Lending what strength she had, the only way she knew how.

She sighed softly. She wished she could tell him that Annie would come. That he'd wake up tomorrow and she'd be there at his side. But she couldn't promise that. And she didn't want to make an empty promise when there was no way to know for sure.

Mitchell nodded, then cleared his throat as he noticed that Maryanne would not see him nod. "Yeah..." He swallowed. There was a lump in his stomach as his thoughts raced around nothing. "I wouldn't want to hurt you... but... I might need you to stop me." He had asked Lily the same after Annie had told him about his fate but their friendship here, he doubted that telling her to keep him from murdering people would help in any way to reestablish it.

She didn't see it, but she felt him nod. Leaning back she met his eyes with her own. "Don't you worry about hurting me. I'm not indestructible but I'm tougher than I look. I'll stop you. I promise." It felt good to just bury her anger with him. To pick up as if nothing was any different. What was a little anger between friends?

He nodded. "Thanks," he mumbled. It was selfish. A part of him knew that. He let Maryanne carry his problems. But he couldn't do it on his own. He smiled. "I know you are." The problem was, so was he and he already looked a lot stronger to begin with. But the promise felt to good to argue and so he stayed quiet and let himself be calmed by the comfort of her hug. He could feel her heart beat against his chest and swallowed down the hunger. Why couldn't it leave him alone for a minute or two?

"You know what's better than hugs for the wounded soul?" He couldn't see it but she had the cheekiest grin. Part of the reason she felt like there was a possibility that she was gaining weight instead of maybe pregnancy? Because she'd given into the want for comfort food more often than she should have. Her appetite was ravenous. "Pancakes." She was, of course, offering. Willing to cook for him. Having a kitchen of her own was definitely a plus.

Mitchell released her chuckling. "Now this is an offer I can hardly decline," he smiled back at her. He glanced at the sky. It looked better. Not as dark as it had been a few minutes ago.

"Thanks," he said, smiling softly. He meant more than just the pancakes. Their friendship was precious. Easy and deep at the same time. It wasn't something that you found every day.

She snagged his hand and brought it to her lips. It was a strange, affectionate, but not more than was uniquely her. And she did love Mitchell, not the way she did Daryl, but in a way that he was irreplaceable. "What are you thanking me for? I only do what comes easy." Not staying mad, she felt her blood pressure drop, in his presence.

She lead him through, down the stairs. To the apartment she and Daryl shared. She was sure everyone else's was nearly identical. Though she'd snagged a few pieces here and there from a thrift shop or two. "Now these are made from... well the eggs aren't chicken's but the taste isn't too wild."
