Who? Jay Gatsby & OPEN
Where? The pub
When? Saturday evening.
What? Purim costume party.
Status? OPEN TO ALL
Rating? We'll see...

Jay often felt a little out of his depth on the island. He was never entirely sure what his purpose was- he enjoyed working in the pub well enough, and it seemed to be the closest to what he was actually good at. He knew that his talent lay in throwing parties- that seemed to be what he ended up being known for, at least. And the people on this island really did deserve to have a little fun when they could get it. After seeing how happy Maryanne was, Jay felt like he just wanted to spread the love, and see some more smiles on faces.

He'd arranged something of a buffet, some American foods (Chips and dips, mini hot dogs, chicken wings, pizza slices) mixed with some traditional Jewish cuisine (hamantaschen, cous cous, challah, stuffed vine leaves), and the bar had been set up for self-service, although Jay would be happy to mix a cocktail for anyone who had a particular request.

As for a costume, Jay was out of his usual three-piece suit, and dressed as a massive crayon, of course.

Now, he just had to hope people actually turned up, or he was just a nutter in a costume.

Fool really had no idea what Purim was meant to be, but it did know comedy, and it did know drinking, eating and dancing. A costume was easy enough. As a licensed court jester, amusing attire was already a given, although it hadn't been flaunting it, until now. Brightly dressed, coxcomb, facepaint- Fool was as much ready to work as it was to enjoy the festivities.

It took a pint of ale- indeed, for they appeared to come in glass, pint-sized containers- and moved to the buffet table, curiously picking up one of the triangular pastries, and nibbling on a corner.

Lacey had worn a hand-made pink flamingo dress over a long sleeved, off-white top and light beige slacks. It was much crazier than the costume she'd worn last Halloween and she was beginning to feel self-conscious. She walked over to the buffet, thinking that having something to eat might help distract her from that self-consciousness. Before she picked out a snack, she noticed the fool. She smiled at her, or was it him? She couldn't tell, but it didn't matter to her. Seeing the bright costume had made her feel at ease. "Your costume is wonderful." She commented. "So colourful."

Fool turned to see who was speaking to it, and couldn't help but give a wide smile on seeing the costume she was wearing.

"Many thanks, my dear lady. Forsooth, I think it is thine own which is deserving of such praise! I have never seen anything quite like," it insisted, in an unusually complimentary fashion for itself.

"Why, thank you!" Lacey replied. She guessed by her/his manner of speech that they were from vastly different times. She could take full credit for her costume, and not have to admit it was inspired by the Björk swan dress. "It's supposed to be a flamingo."

"Ah, of course," Fool agreed, with a nod. "I'm not sure what that is. Some sort of exotic bird, I presume?" it asked, feeling ironically foolish.

"Yes, that's exactly right." Lacey replied. "It's a bird famous for standing on one foot. I haven't seen any on the island yet, but one might show up."

"For standing on one foot?" Fool repeated, lifting one foot from the ground and balancing as an example. "I've never known a creature to be famous for such a feat," it commented, amused. "Well, if one does, you must tell me," it smiled.

"Yes, just like that." Lacey commented on his demonstration. "I'll be sure to keep an eye out for one." She added with a smile. "And your costume is some type of clown? Or a jester?"

"Splendid!" it commented, rather thrilled by the idea of seeing something new.

"I'm afraid I have cheated a little, as my own daily attire is required to be comical in nature. I am a court jester, although currently without my king," it said, giving her something of a curtsey.

Lacey smiled at the curtsey. "Wow. I've never met a real court jester before."

Fool didn't expect Lacey's reaction. People weren't generally that impressed by meeting a jester. Perhaps she was a peasant, at home. She didn't seem like one, but this place did seem to offer a fresh start. It was possible.

"We are most common, miss. Have you never been to court?" he asked of her. "Then you may have seen one of our kind in taverns, or in the streets- although be always mindful of those who are unlicensed for such acts, they may be crooks," he told her.

"No, I've never been to court. Where I'm from, we don't have courts, at least not the type with jesters." She replied with a slightly amused grin. If certain friends from her hometown were around to hear that, she was sure they'd follow it with a lawyer joke. "Oh, you don't have to worry that around here. We don't have money, so there's no real reason for anyone to be a crook."

"If you don't have courts, where do you keep all of your fools? Surely you don't let them integrate into regular society," it joked, with a waggle of the eyebrows. "And no, I'm not speaking of my own kind," it added confirmation.

"Ah, yes. I keep forgetting."

Abigail and open

Abigail was glad for the chance to attend a real party. She had put together a 'Velma' costume. She wasn't really a fan of Scooby Doo, or other cartoons; but it allowed her an excuse to wear a turtleneck to cover her scar. Earlier that evening, she had been careful not to let Hannibal see her in it. He was so particular about his clothes; she didn't think he'd approve of costumes.

Once she arrived at the party, she had gone to the buffet and selected a few of the 'American foods' to sample. The causal foods were another thing Hannibal might not approve of, and she enjoyed having pizza and hotdogs for a change. Once she finished her snack, she stood back from the others in the room and watched them as they interacted. She smiled at a few random people, hoping someone would come over to talk to her.

Jay, of course, wasn't familiar with Scooby Doo, and so he wasn't even entirely sure that Abigail was in costume, at first. He wouldn't have wanted to assume she was, only to be told that her comedy costume was in fact her usual attire.

So, he wouldn't mention it at all. Looking beyond the glasses and- was it a wig?- he was sure she wasn't someone he had seen on the island before. Not wanting to be a rude host, he was in the process of mingling. Abigail looked shy and nervous, but with a little smile that made him realise who he was reminded of. She was a regular Nick Carraway, just waiting to be noticed.

"Good evening, miss. Jay Gatsby-" he introduced himself, holding out a hand for her to shake. "I don't believe I've had the pleasure."

Abigail watched as the man in the crayon costume walked over. He looked very friendly, which was very different than the people she was used to. It was a nice change from her past.

"Nice to meet you, Jay. That's a famous name that you have." She smiled and shook his hand when he offered it. "I'm Abigail. And I'm wondering, is blue your favourite colour?" She had left off her last name on purpose, always concerned that someone might find out who she really was and what she had done.

"Yes, I believe it is," he smiled, being perfectly aware of the strange book about one summer of his life. It was something that he had just grown to accept, and he often forgot that not everyone would know that he was the same Jay Gatsby.

"Lovely to meet you, Abigail," he told her, not pushing for a surname to go with it. He certainly understood the complexities a name could present. "Hmm?" he asked, confused for a second, before he remembered his costume and chuckled lightly. "Oh, yes, what gave me away?" he joked.

"Were your parents fans of the novel?" Abigail asked, thinking it was too much of a coincidence for that not to be the case. She hadn't experienced enough of the island, outside of Hannibal's house, to know that there were fictional characters around.

Abigail smiled back at him. "Oh, it must have been a lucky guess." She replied.

"Oh, no. I'm the same Gatsby. Sorry, I thought you knew," he admitted, giving her a pat on the shoulder. He tended to forget that not everyone was as up to date on the island's happenings.

"Must've been. Can I get you a drink, Abigail?" he asked.

"Seriously?" Abigail asked. She was still adjusting to the idea of non-human people and people from different times. And now she had to add fictional characters to the list of unbelievable things, not knowing that she was actually a fictional character as well.

Abigail glanced over to the bar and back to Gatsby. "Are there non-alcoholic drinks?" She asked.

"Yes, indeed. I must admit it was rather a shock to me, as well," he admitted. Oh, he had been angry with Nick for days on end, presuming that he had somehow published it, considering he was the narrator of the tale. Now, he rather wished that had been the case... being fictional seemed a great deal more disturbing.

"Of course. There are a variety of fruit juices, coke- regular and diet, lemonade, sprite, and something called Dr Pepper, I have never dared to try, as of yet," he admitted. Pepper? It sounded awful.

"I imagine it must have been." Abigail commented, thinking back to the biography of her life that Freddie had been planning to write. She wondered if it had anything to do with her being brought to the island.

"Could I have a lemonade?" Abigail asked. It still seemed strange not to have to pay for anything.

"I must admit, everyone has been quite swell about it all," he told her, with a shrug. "I know I'm not the only one with their story out there somewhere, so I think people are quite understanding. A lot less judgemental than I am used to," he admitted.

"Sure you can," he nodded, heading to the bar to grab her a lemonade, and returning with it again. "Here we go."

"A lot less judgemental than I'm used to, too." Abigail commented, still thinking of the possibility of a book about her life and its possible connection to her presence on the island. People might become judgmental if they need the truth about her. "Did you know if any of the stories, connected to people on the island, are by an author named Freddie Lounds?"

Abigail took the drink with a smile. "Thank you."

"It's a pleasant change," he smiled. He thought about her question for a moment, and then shook his head. "Not that I've seen, no, but it's always possible, I suppose," he told her, not realising the import of the question. "Friend of yours?" he asked.

"Sure, sure," Jay nodded, knowing his manners, and not prying any further into matters.

"I know. But you never know- they may well turn up when you least expect it," he suggested. "But until then, they're a decent crowd around here, and I'm sure you'll be made very welcome," he assured her.

Abigail nodded and gave a bit more thought to the year he would be from, and the lack of Scooby Doo references then. "I just realized something. You probably have no idea what my costume is, unless you've been watching TV on the island." A grin appeared on her face. "You must think I'm a terrible dresser."

"Maybe they will." Abigail agreed. "Oh, that's very true. Everyone I've met so far has been very helpful. And I do have one friend from home here."

"It's possible," he nodded. "I'm glad to hear it. And that's good, how nice! It does help. A friend of mine was here when I first arrived, but- no, it's just me, now."

Abigail actually giggled at that. "Oh, it's a costume. Based on a character from a children's tv program. About young detectives and their dog."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your friend." Abigail murmured. She wasn't sure if his friend vanished or died, but neither was good in her mind. She didn't know what she would do if anything happened to Hannibal.

He nodded, and shrugged slightly. "Yes, well, from what I understand, he will have been sent home, so perhaps it is for the best," he told her, trying to look on the bright side.

Amélie was wearing her 'operation game' dress, a red clown's nose and she carried a red purse. It was half of a couple's costume; Steve was in surgical scrubs. She had sent him to the bar to get drinks. She would have gone with him if it hadn't been for her purse being full of bells and other noise makers. Every time she moved, it jingled and she blushed. She would have left them at home, if she hadn't been looking forward to using them at some point in the party.

Amélie glanced around the room, looking for someone to talk to, or for Steve to come back.

Steven was having a great time wearing his costume that Amelie had picked out. Who knew that you could go as the game Operation. He looked pretty amazing and he thought that Amelie looked pretty hot herself as well. As he was sent off to get drinks, he went up to the bar and got her a drink and himself just a beer. This was certainly going to be a fun night.

He came back with their drinks and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "So this is certainly a fun party. I'm glad that you suggested these costumes." He said with a smile.

"Thank you....Me too." Amélie said with a grin, as she took her drink. "I haven't seen anyone else in an operation costume." She had seen a crayon, and in the past, she'd seen a game of twister costume. But she was convinced that operation was unique. And she did love to stand out from the crowd.
