Dreaming reality
When Jake had fallen asleep Neytiri had lain there, her mind seeking Eywa, and settling for the warmth she felt come over her as a sign Eywa was with her. As she'd drifted off to sleep she smiled, the forest of her homeworld in her mind, Jake holding an arrow ready for release and her tapping his elbow and flicking his shoulder...
Suddenly, with no warning, she sat up, the sounds of the machines that had destroyed the Tree of Voices loud in her ears, and her voice in her head crying out to wake Jake. She turned to look at him, still asleep, but even before she could lay back down again he started to mutter, his body jerking suddenly and face twitching. She ducked as his arm swung up as if hitting something, and she reached out to take his wrist, realising her strength now was less than his, but he seemed to settle his arm anyway.
The rest of the night she sat there, listening, watching as he dreamed his dreams. Names he had cried out that he'd never said, or even recognised before when she had talked of their time on her world, their world. The leaders of the tribes he had called together to battle the SkyPeople, and Toruk! She had stood, away from the bed at first, then coming closer again when Jake's arms had flailed and body had writhed. There was no holding him as he swore and twisted, as if doing great battle himself with an invisible combatant.
When finally he had settled again, tears had rolled down his cheeks and she wiped them away, finally laying beside him and slowly drifting off to sleep as she watched him.
