A dark figure moved through the streets, a hooded cape hiding his features. He stayed in the shadows, making sure to not be heard or seen as he went from building to building toward his destination. He had one goal in mind this evening. One thing that had to be done before he would sneak back through the darkness never to be seen again. He knew better than to try to actually get into the house. There were too many people that would smell him before he even got two steps in the door. Best to leave the package on the step. He could knock and run away to make sure that it was found. Or he could leave it, assuming that someone would find it. He had not yet made up his mind. He set the box on the step just outside the door. He stood staring at it for a long moment. It had taken him some time to engrave “Sophia Peletier. Age 14” onto the top and it was crudely done, but it was there nonetheless. He hoped that she would like the gift. But he would never know for sure. Finally making a decision, he quickly knocked on the door before disappearing once again into the darkness. The contents of the box were as follows: A doll named Maria of which he’d taken very good care over the years. A recording of a song that had spoken to him and made him think of her the moment he heard it. The following letter, rolled up neatly and bound with a leather tie. |
