He's gone! He's gone!
The despair ridden voice burst full force into F'lar's mind as he stirred from sleep. It sent an electric jolt of cold fear down his spine and forced him up into sitting to look around for Mnementh. Only.. the great bronze dragon was nowhere to be seen. Because he wasn't in the Weyr. Dread surged through him, but he was a dragonman of Pern and he did not give way to his emotions. F'lar controlled himself, shook his sleepy haze from his mind and turned his eyes skyward when he heard the great, booming roar of the dragon overhead.
Mnementh!
F'lar! Relief flooded from the dragon into F'lar's own consciousness and they both settled into the feeling together.
I thought you were gone. Away. Between. And without me.
I could never, F'lar said, soothing. I'm safe. What happened? Where's the wing? Will you tell Canth, Golanth and Ruth to get the wing's reports?
I will tell them, the dragon agreed solemnly. I was afraid.
F'lar frowned, and looked around again, finally noting the other man. He blinked, his eyes widening in shock. "What?" this was unheard of! He touched the cord around his ankle with wariness and trepidation. Then moved slowly toward the other man so as not to frighten him, and poked him hard in the ribs.
"Hello!" he said sharply, "what is this?"
