Gatsby hadn't really spoken to Nick since his birthday. It wasn't that he'd been actively avoiding him- well, okay, that had been exactly what he'd been doing. But he could easily pass it off as a coincidence if he had to. It was a big house.
But his conversation with Mr Fitzgerald, he just had to stop being weak-minded and face him again. His head was reeling, and he had to speak with Nick, he had to share it with him. He wasn't going to face this Fitzgerald character on his own, and Nick was the one who had had his intellectual property plagiarised by this mad man. He deserved to know what was going on, to have his say-
Admittedly, the way he had felt when Fitzgerald had referred to Nick as fictional had surprised him. His level of anger was probably more than should be expected over just a friend.
He would just act as if everything was fine, he wouldn't mention it. That was best. He descended the staircase, deliberately keeping a light bounce in his step, despite the seriousness of what he was about to share.
'I say old sport, you'll never believe who I've been talking to-' was what he had intended to say. It wasn't what came out of his mouth.
"I've seen the world, done it all-" he started to sing, completely against his will- oh God, what was happening? "Had my cake now. Diamonds, brilliant, and Bel Air now-"
He reached the bottom of the staircase, crossing the room to Nick, even though he should have just ran away.
