Since arriving on the island and being exposed to Nick's published journals, Gatsby had started to gain a different perspective on the situation with Daisy. Seeing her through someone else's eyes was enlightening. It shattered the illusion, and made it harder to cling to his nostalgic ideals. He understood that she was a symbol- that she represented everything that James Gatz wasn't, but Jay Gatsby could be.
He had thought he was over it. That he'd moved on. But when he saw her, lost and alone in the middle of an unfamiliar street, he felt conflicted. There was an undeniable feeling of resentment- he could feel it in the tension in his shoulders, in the way his teeth grinded together. But there was something else- a wave almost like nausea, a lovesick feeling, the reminder of his youth. And he couldn't just leave her standing there in a thin party dress, in a strange place.
He took a few cautious steps towards her, ducking his head in an almost coy way as he slipped his suit jacket from his shoulders, leaving him in a shirt and waistcoat.
"Hello, Daisy," he said softly, sliding the jacket over her shoulders automatically. "Don't tell me Tom got to you, after all," he asked sadly.
