Annie was working at the Clinic, keeping to herself mostly. She had no real issue with Nina, but she still felt the need to keep to herself. She was still struggling to keep herself corporeal a lot of the time. She had felt the old fears returning, that Owen had been right and she was utterly useless, that no one would ever want her, that she was stupid and pathetic. Right now, she couldn’t face anyone much, but she’d made the decision that she wasn’t going to let grief destroy her again. --- Mitchell had screwed up. There was no way around it. Or rather, the island had made him screw up. Jesus, he still couldn’t believe it. He hadn’t really dumped her and run after Nina. He hadn’t seriously written a fucking love song FOR Nina! Oh god! He just wanted to forget about everything. But first he had to fix things with Annie. He needed her. He loved her. It was quite a stunt, searching for Annie while at the same time avoiding Nina. But he managed and now he saw Annie’s back and he didn’t know what to do or say. After a few moments, he settled for a very eloquent “Err… hey.” --- Annie felt his presence before she saw him. She’d always known when he was around, he’d become a part of her as her best friend, her protector, then her lover. Yes she knew that whatever had happened on Valentines Day and the week beyond had screwed up everyone, but the fact was, he’d dumped her via text, then suggested they should still be friends, thus attributing as much value to her as a person might an old pizza box. “Go away Mitchell, please.” Annie said softly. She wondered if he’d even realised she hadn’t been back to the apartment in a few days. Part of her had embraced the pain, and the levels of her powers were returning, she didn’t want to see him, but she didn’t want to hurt him either. ---- Oh Jesus, he could hear the pain and the hurt all too clearly. He took a step towards her but stopped again, unsure what to do. He wanted to comfort her, hold her and make things better. But he was responsible. In a way. He had been out of his mind. “Please, Annie, that wasn’t me,” he whispered softly. “I don’t love Nina.” He sighed. “I love you.” --- “It was the island, I know...I just...” Annie turns towards him, trying not to cry, the lighting in the clinic already beginning to flicker as her emotions rose to the surface. “You made me feel just as worthless as Owen did...and I’m not...I know I probably expected too much, I mean you’re not in love with me or anything, but that Mitchell, how do you expect me to be?” Her voice was still soft, she was raged out. The island had got to her too, building a relationship with Alex that had blossomed incredibly rapidly, but had happened after Mitchell had pulled that little stunt. ---- This time Mitchell closed the distance between them and pulled her into an embrace. “You are not worthless. I’ve just… I’ve been out of my mind. Jesus, I’ve wrote Nina a fucking love song. I clearly did not think straight. But fact is: I want you, Annie. You – you.” There was a begging undertone to his words. --- “Nina is a nice person you know” Annie muttered into his shoulder. “And I did try not to be around that much while you were being in love with one of my best friends.” Her voice shook again as she pushed away from him a little. “Do you really want...me...because...I was so incredibly pissed off and hurt and I don’t want to do that again.” ----- „Hmm,“ Mitchell grunted. „Nina is not the one I love.” His heart sank as she pushed herself away from him, even if it was just a little bit. “I don’t want to live without you.” There – the simple scary truth out in the open. --- “Mitchell...you have lived without me...you’d be OK...and you love me?” Annie murmured, unable to quite believe it. Her Mitchell from her time had loved her, kissed her cold lips and told her forever, but this one...it had never been talked about really. “Really?” --- “Yes... really,” he answered, letting the words sound as sincere as he could. He cupped her face with his hand and narrowed the distance between the two of them, his eyes jumping from her eyes to her lips and back to her eyes again, carefully watching for any sign from her. --- Annie licked her lips as she looked at him. They hadn’t been this close to each other since they’d kissed at the apartment a couple of weeks before, and as before it felt right in his arms, but since then he’d hurt her so much, even if he hadn’t meant to. “Is that meant to make it all OK?” She asked softly. ---- The honest answer was a simple ‘yes’. The other Annie – the old Annie – she would have understood. They had gone through all kinds of shit on the train. He had attacked someone there because the fucking vehicle had messed with his head. But this Annie, she had no clue. Jesus! He needed to stop this comparing bullshit or else he would turn into George and ruin his happiness before it had a chance to begin. “Jesus, Annie, what more do you want me to say? That wasn’t me.” --- Annie leaned into his touch, sighing softly. “I know...I’m sorry.” Maybe it was her fault. She tilted her head to kiss him softly. “Just trying to get my head around it all...not used to this. It hurt, so much...you’re the only person, whichever version, that I’ve ever loved and I never thought you’d hurt me.” “Plus...flowers are a good thing” Annie said softly teasing ---- The kiss was perfect but then Mitchell sighed. Oh god, why did she need to make this so complicated? “Flowers, yeah, noted,” he said drily. “Annie, I don’t want to hurt you. I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m just... an idiot sometimes.” He leaned his forehead against hers. --- “I know it wasn’t you, maybe it was me, not understanding how this place works...I’ll be more prepared next time things go mad...Plus I did fall for Alex for a bit, we’ll be OK.” Annie murmured. “Should I come home now?” --- “Yeah... I think that is a very good idea,” Mitchell whispered, smiling down at her. Such brilliance also deserved a kiss and who was he to deny it? So he closed the last inch and kissed her again, longer this time. --- Annie sighed into the kiss, one hand moving to play through his hair. “Really missed you” She murmured, leaning into him, deciding to really just let it go. This island screwed with people and there was no point going back over it. She was with Mitchell, she loved him, he loved her and she was happy to be here. ---- “Yeah, yeah, I missed you too,” Mitchell said smiling. Relief washed over him. They were okay, everything was back to normal. They were together and they were fine. |
