Who: Philip and Sirius (and others, eventually)
What: A bit of fun goes wrong
Where: In the gardens at Sirius' house
When: Backdated: Sunday afternoon
It had been a strange day for Sirius. He'd woken up and had breakfast at Mr Leyton's house, and it had still been very early when Arcturus arrived to collect him. His uncle had looked very tired, but when Sirius had asked why he didn't wait until later, he'd been told that Mr Leyton and his sister were going to church, and that was an unsuitable place for him. Sirius hadn't been satisfied with this. It wasn't because he was too young, because Philip Hamilton went, and it wasn't because it was unsuitable for gentlemen or for wizards, because Mr Leyton went. To Sirius it was like some great secret, but today it was one that Arcturus seemed in no mood to let him in on, because his answers to Sirius' questions as they flew home were unusually short.
Arcturus had taken to bed then, and not even gone to magic class, and that made Sirius worry a little that he might be ill, but the younger boy had amused himself easily enough by writing little notes on the network, and sorting the letters into the little boxes in the cabinet. He felt quite grown-up and responsible doing this, because usually he only did it when Arcturus was watching. He knew how to do it, though, and he didn't want to wake Arcturus in case he really was ill, and it would be bad if people had to wait too long and their letters were late. He enjoyed the little task so much that he went to his desk and wrote a couple of short letters of his own, just so he could put them in the right little box on his desk, run back to the cabinet and see them in the big sorting box, and then pick them up and send them on to the right place.
His uncle finally got up again after midday, and Sirius didn't think he looked very ill, but definitely a bit peaky, as his mama used to say about him. They had tea and then he learnt that the Hamiltons were coming over, which was very good news! Sirius went upstairs and put on his tie and combed his hair like he was told, and then there wasn't long to wait until they arrived. The adults – in his head Arcturus was a sort of honorary adult, even if he wasn't really, because he was the one who looked after him and took care of everything – wanted to talk, and so he and Philip were sent to play out-of-doors, which was fine by him. Better than sitting and being polite and quiet all the time.
Except that there was only so much walking around the gardens they could do, even if they were nice, and after he'd shown Philip how the plants he was growing were doing, and then the garden lanterns, which weren't even impressive because it was daytime, he wasn't sure what to do. He didn't want his guest to be bored.
'What if we go down the hill and over to the trees?' he suggested first. He hadn't been told that they couldn't go outside the gardens, after all. Before Philip could give an opinion of this, however, Sirius had an even better idea, and he grinned. 'No wait - what if I show you how I can fly? On a broomstick?'
