He didn't jump when Maryanne tapped his shoulder, because the HUD on his glasses had let him know she was approaching. He looked round from the names and signed hello, then turned to face her properly as he paid attention to what she was saying.
"I know some of the names," he replied. "Some of them were on the other station for a while, and a few of them are from my history texts. But most of them are names I don't know."
His hands fell to his sides for a moment as he quickly checked the data Lyla was feeding to his HUD, and then looked up as it started snowing again. The snow here was pleasant, even though it had turned cold. It drifted down slowly, it fell in big fat flakes that melted slowly on your hand when you caught it. It didn't arrive in an unannounced blizzard, driving into people's skin like icy needles or as massive hailstones that smashed into walls and people and broke whatever it could, before vanishing as soon as people realized it could be used as a water source. He liked this snow, quite a lot.
"We didn't have a wall. I don't think it would have lasted more than a day if we'd ever tried," he added, with a glance back at the names. "Tell me about some of them?"
