Who: Neville and Gen
What: Candy?
Where: Near Nev's greenhouses to start
When: after this
Closed/ongoing

When Neville woke up to a flash of light, a note, and a few feathers it hadn't taken him long to figure out what had happened. And the note had only confirmed it. He'd known for a long time that, while Hope had been there, her heart had never come with her. Part of him was almost surprised she'd been there as long as she had.

He'd gone to his closet and pulled out a small wooden box. It was something his Gran had given him back home, he was supposed to put his wand in it at night but he'd never gotten out of the habit of keeping it under his pillow. He opened it and gently placed the feathers on top of a small pile of droobles gum wrappers before closing it again and tucking it back away, in his bedside table this time. He sat on the edge of the bed for a few minutes, staring at the letter. Then he sighed softly, tucked that away too and stood up. As much as it would have been easier to just go back to bed, not move until the ache went away, he couldn't. He had dealt with loss enough in his life to know that he couldn't let it consume him.

After Jake had come to talk to him, and he'd texted Gen some, Neville made his way to his greenhouses. Ruby was there waiting for him, but even the dragon seemed to know something wasn't quite right. Instead of his usual bounding and enthusiastic greeting, Neville received a more subdued hello, with Ruby nudging the side of Neville's face with his own and then resting his head heavily on Neville's shoulder. "Yeah, me too." Nevvile said, petting down the soft skin at the side of Ruby's neck. "But we'll be alright." he smiled a little and lifted Ruby's head to kiss his snout, then went to his gardens. He figured he could work on a few things while he waited.

He was kneeling by one of his own works, a hybrid he had made of some kind of gardenia and a flutterby bush. He'd hoped for something that worked like the flutterby bush, smelling particularly alluring to whomever was smelling it, but that blossomed more than once a century. It seemed to have almost worked, the flowers smelled different to different people (for Neville himself the scent was usually earth, the smoke from a candle that's just been blown out, and ozone) but everyone still seemed to get a soft scent of gardenia as well. He didn't mind that so much, and figured maybe he could breed it out after a few more generations. He gently pruned some of the less healthy greenery from the plant with his fingers, letting Ruby wander and laze in the morning sun while he waited for his breakfast and Neville waited for Gen.

"Okay, good." Ruby had glared at the dog with the fire but didn't do anything about it. Neville figured he might have if anyone had actually been hurt, Ruby could definitely be protective, but, thankfully, it didn't usually come up.

Neville stepped to one side so Ruby wasn't really behind him anymore, "Yeah. Or he just doesn't like being ignored." he reached up to rub the side of the dragon's head, smiling a bit, though it didn't quite reach his eyes the way it normally would. "I haven't quite figured out which it is yet."

The smile was good to see. He looked better with that smile on his face. He was more Neville and Neville had been important to her. "I'm sure it's those scratches you are giving him! He might just want one of those..."

"Yeah, those too. He is rather spoilt." Neville teased a little, but he couldn't really care to feel bad about it. "He probably knows it's about time for breakfast too." The dragon seemed to take that as confirmation that food was on the way and jumped a little, angling himself toward the greenhouses. "Did you want to help? I've got a bunch of fish in the greenhouse and I usually throw them around a bit so he has to chase them. It's good practice if you know banishing or levitation charms."

Genevieve couldn't help but giggle at the Ruby's eagerness. The dragon was adorable. "I would love to help. Besides, practise is something I could really need." She smiled at Neville. It was true. She would probably fail the exams of Hogwart's first year. Even now with her own wand, she barely used magic.

"Sure, wait here a minute." He turned and pointed a finger at Ruby. "You too." he told the dragon, who plopped his back half down so he was almost sitting, clearly pouting about it.

Neville went in to the first greenhouse and gathered a bunch of fish out of the fridge he kept in there. He was glad that the lake seemed to restock now and then, and he always tried to stock up when the doors were open. He put them in to a basket and carried it back outside.

"Do you know how to banish things?" he asked Gen. He felt a little bad-she'd asked him to help her learn magic, but they hadn't done it much since ending up on the station.
