Who: Dan and Jack, and Abra if they wake her up
Where: Torrance/Stone apartment
What: Practice makes perfect!
When: Slightly forward-dated to early morning, April 21
Rating: uh, Dan has nightmares as usual?

It had been one hell of a morning, really, Dan thought, and he hadn't even been awake for a full hour yet. He let himself back into the apartment, having collected breakfast on his way back from visiting the animals, and sat down at the table. Then he slumped down in the chair, crossed his legs at the ankles and wondered if he should drink his coffee or wait to see if anyone was going to join him.

He hadn't slept very much, which was par for the course for both himself and Loki, it seemed. He'd finally drifted off to sleep in the wee small hours and then had all kinds of fun as his usual nightmares bled into Loki's nightmares. He was being chased by the thing in his father's body yet again, and was caught by Mrs Massey, her cold strong fingers wrapping round his throat and starting to squeeze, and then things began to change. Mrs Massey grew taller and broader, the purple coloring in her feet spreading to take over her entire body and as Dan struggled in her grip, adult-sized now, with his feet dangling in the air as he was lifted by his throat with one hand, he realized that she was no longer Mrs Massey. She was now the giant he'd seen months ago in a dream, the one where he'd broadcast his sleep-talking over the network. The giant purple man looked at him, moved his hand and then SNAP. Pain flared up in his neck as the rest of his body went numb and darkness took over. Dan had woken up with a scream caught in his chest, and wasn't surprised when it then escaped through his chest as a vague rattling sound.

When he woke up from nightmares in this body, he invariably woke up dead and slightly decayed. He had no AED with him, and he didn't feel right going to medbay for what was essentially a jumpstart, so he needed to head round to visit Kat's thunderbird. At least he'd worked out teleporting so it wasn't going to take forever to walk or run round. He still hadn't worked up the confidence to be able to jump directly through space, so he made a jump down to a spot he knew on the spine, then bounced along until he was beside the correct wheel, and then he was in the park. One jumpstart later, and he reversed his journey with a detour to the food court to pick up breakfast, and now he was sitting at the dinner table, watching some of his dad's pens as he made them float about. Then they got set down again and Dan just grabbed his book from out of the air as he called it over to him. Practice made perfect, it was true, but he'd reached a pretty exciting part in his book and he wanted to know what would happen next.

Dan blinked at the sudden hug before hugging back, although he was careful not to squeeze too much. Loki was stronger than he was and he didn't want to accidentally break any of his dad's ribs. "Thanks," he said quietly, "it's good to look like I should again." Plus the hug chased away any lingering whisps of nightmares.

It did not get rid of the roque mallet in the corner of the room, though. He continued to ignore it.

Jack pulled back a little after a minute. "One of the upsides of being Loki. That and... Stevie Nicks." A little grin played over his lips. It was hard to miss his son's obsession. It was one of a few things both the boys had in common. Though he doubted he would catch this one with his pants down around his ankles.

"I have a question. Is that real? And if that's real, is that you? Or me?" He pointed over at the roque mallet in the corner. He had been doing his best to ignore it. But... You could only ignore a thing for so long.

Dan narrowed his eyes at the mention of Stevie Nicks. What was his dad getting a- Oh. Oh, Christ. He rolled his eyes and then quickly shifted to look just like his favorite singer. "You mean so I can do this?" he asked, sounding just like Stevie, and then laughed. "I bet practicing with Maryanne would be all kinds of interesting now!"

The question, though. All thoughts of what singers he could now copy fled out of his mind, and he turned to face the mallet properly. He flickered back to looking like Loki for a moment, and then forced himself to look like himself again before answering. "It's a memory. I thought it was mine, I've been seeing them all over the station for weeks now, but I've been ignoring them. Is this the first one you've seen?"

"You even sound like her." Jack chuckled. Clearly he hadn't tried it yet. "I bet you two would sound legendary." He didn't poke fun, Stevie was lovely, of course. Just more cuckoo for his tastes.

"No. But it's the first time it's stayed after a little denial, and rubbing of the eyes." Though he hadn't done that yet, he had closed them a few times at least. Usually all he had to do was blink.

"I guess it belongs to both of us, then."

Dan glanced round at his dad as he pushed his hair back from his face, before walking over to the mallet. If this was like that memory of Mrs Massey, then his hand would pass right through it.

Sure enough, he reached for the handle and grasped at absolutely nothing. "As long as that's all we're getting, then... that's okay. Right?"

Jack chewed his lower lip as Dan approached the mallet. Almost sure that he would be able to grasp it. Because it seemed so real. At least blood wasn't dripping from it.

His shoulders relaxed when his hand passed right through it. He let out the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding in a great sigh of relief. "Yeah, but I'd hate Abra to see it. Not that she knows what it is, but..." He'd like to keep her from the Overlook as much as possible.

Dan nodded before having another go at lifting the mallet, but his hand passed through the handle yet again.

"No, I know. I know what you mean, yeah," he said, and stepped back from the memory. "I used to see them when we lived in Boulder. You came back from the interview with Mr. Ullman, and you'd gotten groceries and they were in the front seat beside you, but when I went to help you bring them in, there was a mallet there instead. It had... stuff on it," he continued, talking quietly but not looking at Jack, his hand reaching up to brush against the side of his head when he mentioned 'stuff'.

He looked back up at Jack after that. "Then it was just groceries again."

Jack made a face. He didn't remember the mallet then, he hadn't seen it then, of course. But the picture Dan drew, was graphic enough. "When I see it, when I used to see it back then, it's usually dripping with blood."

He shook his head. "I know it lead up to a lot of stuff, and maybe you wouldn't have been there for Abra if I had found something else.... But there wont be a day in my life that I don't regret taking you to that place."

Dan just nodded in reply. "It's okay. I know. I knew," he said, in an attempt to reassure his dad. "Besides, how could you have known? Even if I'd understood what I was seeing, and told you... I was five."

He'd taken a couple more steps back towards where Jack was standing when the memory changed. The mallet was picked up, and Dan couldn't help but look round at the low hiss it made as it was swung through the air. "Danny?" the memory spoke, its voice like Jack's, but... off. Like something was pretending to be him and almost getting it right, but not quite. It was too petulant, too whiny to be Jack. "You can come out, doc. Just a little spanking, that's all. Take it like a man and it will be all over. We don't need her, doc. Just you and me, right? When we get this little ... spanking ... behind us, it will be just you and me."

Dan just stared in horror as the memory of his father, possessed by the Overlook, dragged the now-splintered and bloodstained roque mallet along the floor behind it. There was blood and confetti in its hair and on its face, and a knife in its back that soaked the shirt it was wearing with thick dark blood.

"Come here, you little shit! Right now!"

Oh. Oh this place could fuck right off! He knew this wasn't a memory of his. He knew that bloodied face. Knew that voice, that wasn't his because he'd heard it enough times. But this didn't happen to him. Dan and Bryn had seen to that. They had saved him from being possessed by taking out that voice.

Jack stepped forward and put his hand on Danny's. "He didn't mean it. No matter how you remember it. This wasn't him. He didn't want to hurt you. WE didn't. You mean everything to me, to him." He didn't doubt those words in the slightest. That even from the grave Danny still meant the world to him.

Dan turned his head towards Jack at the touch to his hand, but couldn't quite tear his eyes away from the memory that was coming towards him. The mallet was hefted, tested and then swung against a wall that remained in his memory of 37 years ago. The Overlook in Jack's body continued to try and convince his younger self to come closer, but Dan knew exactly where he'd been and what he was doing, and none of it was 'go see what Daddy wants'.

Normally, Dan was very good at keeping his reactions to awful things very well-hidden. He would look and act beyond calm, he didn't flail or scream or yell or anything like that. He might go a bit paler than usual, or look slightly wild-eyed, but nothing more. He had many years of practice at not-reacting to all manner of terrible ghosts and whatever they got up to, after all. But this, holy shit. Mrs Massey was the worst, yes, but this possessed version of his dad had always given her a run for her money. The Overlook using Jack as a puppet was the other half of his worst nightmare and it was now brought out of his mind, stalking across the living room towards him. And he wasn't in his own body. As the mallet hit what should have been a hotel wall, the magic that made Dan look like himself fell away, revealing Loki's body below it. And true to form, the nightmare meant that the body was dead yet again.

He needed to snap out of it, but the shock had yet to wear off.

"Alright..." He knew that look that scared kid, dear in headlights, blood leeching from the skin look. Then there came Loki. And Jack couldn't miss the flesh curling back from a bone or two in his fingers. Probably up his arm too, but sleeves covered that up.

"Kid, you have to quit staring at him. I would do something drastic to get your attention but that would only hurt me. So.. Keep me from having to hurt myself." He didn't want to have to resort to something that might bring on a different memory. One that he was all to happy to have buried.

Hurt? What? That made Dan look round at Jack, just as the memory started talking about pups needing to take their medicine. But he'd looked away, he'd stopped staring at it and Jack was there instead.

"I... What? You're hurting yourself?" he asked, and then forced himself to turn his back on the memory. It had helped in the food court, it would help here as well. His thoughts were scattered and he was starting to feel like he was in a double dream again, but he kept looking at his dad.

There. That was better. Not giving the horrible memory a second glance would be better. But Jack would take what he could get. He gave Dan a brief smile. "Well, you know how sometimes you see people lightly smack the face of someone who's been knocked out, or in a delirium? I don't know if you noticed, but that'd probably do some damage to my hand." He'd noticed when he'd worn Loki.

The god was tough. Tough to hurt, and tough in other ways. He could probably get ran over by a bull elephant and would only groan slightly.

"Don't do that," Dan replied, and would have brought his hand up to rub at his lips except for the fact that he had bones showing. His brain tried to point out that this was not a normal thing, that his flesh did not act like this, so he must be still asleep, but he knew better. At least, that was what he told himself. The creeping doubt had set in, and he had to fight it.

Fuck, he couldn't even pinch himself to work out if he was awake because the skin on the back of his hand was slightly loose and the pinch wouldn't do anything. He settled for mentally pulling his hand back together again, the rotted flesh disappearing as new layers of muscles and fat and skin came back and knitted together. The few bites of food felt gross in his stomach now, as did the coffee, but he did his best to ignore the feeling - it would go away once he went back to visit a certain Thunderbird.

"I'm awake," he muttered, "even with... that. And... and don't hit me, that's stupid."

"I know. I'd probably break my hand. But..." He was willing to do anything he could. The sight was horrific, and he hadn't gone through it. This was the first time he'd... "Let's go into my room. He won't follow us. And we can stay there until he's gone." It would give him a chance to fully pull himself back together, enough that if he went to see Kat's thunderbird that it would be able to get his heart to beat.

"You can check out my new Story Board, and tell me what you think." Jack gave his son a brief smile. Trying his best to ignore the Overlook Jack.

Dan just nodded. The memory was continuing behind him, but he was doing his best not to listen to it, and then it looped back to the start. "Story board," he said, "let's go."

He knew he could have just walked through the memory, but much like the ghosts on the station, Dan really didn't want to touch it. He darted across the floor before it could get closer and went into his dad's room, carefully scrubbing at his face while he waited on Jack coming into the room behind him.

Jack was shortly behind him. Closing the door behind him, to close out the memory, and the noise it made. A shudder coursed through him when he did. He closed the door on what would have been. God. That was horrible.

He forced a smile, when he turned back to Dan. "Right. Story Board.." He stepped over where he had a couple tucked away, so that he wouldn't lose any of the index cards. "It's an idea I got for a kids book, since there are so many kids here."

Dan nodded, and watched his dad lift out his story board, although he wasn't really paying attention any more. The memory they'd both just seen was one of the main reasons why he'd hidden any copies of any version of The Shining he'd found on the station; why the hell would he voluntarily let Jack find out what had happened? Jesus...

Jack had already started explaining by the time Dan focused on him properly. "I'm sorry," he said suddenly, "I just... I never... I didn't want you to know about... that." Amongst other things. The flesh crept back from a couple of fingers again, but he caught it in time.

That shut him up quick. He set the story board back in its place. "Don't worry about it. I can't say that I didn't... well I didn't expect that to happen." He punctuated the word that by pointing his hands toward the door. "But I've put together that something really bad was going to happen, from the things I remember it was telling me to do. The fact that it made me feel drunk without there actually being any booze in the place."

Jack sat down on the edge of his bed. "But who would have expected that to happen?" Though maybe Dan had seen it, expected it, but just couldn't explain what he'd seen.

Dan watched his dad, and then shrugged a little at his question. "I didn't know what... No, who I was seeing and hearing. That's not your voice, you know? I didn't work it out until..." he said and then paused as he forced himself to think.

"Your Dan probably never realized. I didn't know until he," and Dan pointed back out to the living room where the memory was still calling for him, "got out of the pantry."

"Yeah, you're probably right. Because I didn't get out of the pantry, you and Bryn got me out. I mean I told him once my head was clear. Once we were away from the Overlook. And he seemed to understand. But it's hard to know. He's very closed lipped about it." Jack looked back at the door. Shivering hard when he heard that voice through the door. The slam of the mallet. At least the memory was staying behind the closed door.
