"A telescope is a device that lets you see much further than you can with just your eye. Some of them use glass lenses to bend the light, and it lets you see further ahead of you. So if you're sailing a ship, and you have a telescope, you could see further ahead than if you don't have one. Rocks in the way, enemy ships, whatever. This telescope is looking a lot further away, so it's using radiowaves and... I've lost you, haven't I?"
