Dinner had went very well. Darcy knew that Ashley was a little nervous about it; if there was anywhere to mess up on etiquette, it was going to be at dinner, but Darcy had assured her that if anything was very odd they could laugh it off as an Americanism. Plus, it was among friends, he couldn't imagine any of the Bennet ladies or Charles Bingley would be judging her based on her use of cutlery. Still, he'd had Georgiana show her the ropes on the evenings leading up to it. They'd played pretend a little bit, and it had been a strange sort of fun. Since they were not yet married, Georgiana remained in the role of Lady of the House, which would mean less for Ashley to remember this time around. Darcy did wonder for a moment if that might have changed before they returned to the station, but he didn't allow himself to dwell on the thought for too long. He'd promised to let her name the day, after all.
For Sergeant Sully's sake, Darcy had asked the serving staff not to offer him any alcohol throughout the meal, giving some vague explanation about his health. At this point of the meal, where they would usually offer port or madeira, he had told them they could offer the ladies a drink in the drawing room but to only bring tea and coffee for the gentleman.
The meal being concluded, and the table cleared, Georgiana asked the ladies to join her in her drawing room, and Darcy rose to open the door for them. He gave each of them a polite little nod, but Ashley got a proper smile from him. "You're a natural," he whispered as she passed.
Although the gentlemen would normally stay in the dining room, with only the three of them present, Darcy decided that they could move somewhere more comfortable, and once the ladies were taken care of he led them into another drawing room where they could talk.
"By God, I was sure you were going to end up with Miss Kitty in your lap before the meal was through," Bingley told Bobby, as soon as they were settled. "She's a very determined flirt," he laughed.
