Who: Miguel and Tony
Where: Sarah and Miguel's lab-space
What: Discussing Science and stuff
When: after this
Rating: S for Science! and Spider-man

This Chitauri thing was puzzling Miguel. It was clearly the power source for both weapons. He'd rigged together a few basic circuits and used one of the glowing crystals to power all of them, all at the same time and all of them going full tilt. There was no noticeable power drain on it that he or Lyla could tell, and he was half-tempted to try and rig up some sort of adaptor to allow one of his more energy-thirsty machines from home to use it as a power source and see how long it lasted. There was nothing really coming off of it in the infra-red spectrum, no heat, nothing that Lyla knew to detect. It was weird.

So how the hell had three bank robbers wound up with them powering their weapons? He drank his coffee while he turned one of the crystals over and over in his hand, waiting for Mr. Stark to arrive.

"I don't have any pastries available," Lyla said from behind him, still tinted very slightly purple from Sarah's crystal capacitor, and he looked round at her.

"I think the coffee will be fine, Lyla. Don't worry about it, okay?"

"If you say so, Miguel."

Tony was irritated to say the least. He'd specifically set up an organization so that tech wouldn't end up in civilian hands and it seemed to have done it anyway. "Close enough for government work" was a phrase that was getting to be a little too accurate for Tony's liking.

He grabbed a couple of tools from his lab before heading to Miguel's. At least the kid was into science. He wouldn't have to explain too much. He wanted to just go right in but it wasn't his lab. One thing Tony respected was private lab space, so he knocked.

Miguel looked round at the knock and set his mug and the crystal down on his workbench before heading over to turn up the lights in the lab and then open the door.

"Mr. Stark, thanks for coming," he said, automatically falling back into 'Head of Genetics R&D at Alchemax' mode as he held his hand out to shake Tony's. "I'm Miguel O'Hara. It's great to actually meet you. I grew up reading about you in history class, so this is an honor. Please, come in."

Lyla chose that moment to bring over a fresh mug of coffee as well. "Hello, Mr. Stark. Miguel said you asked for coffee. I hope this is to your liking, although if you would prefer anything else, I have a large selection of fruit teas that I make for Dr. Sarah Sully," she said as she handed over the mug.

"You can call me Tony." He used to enjoy being called Mr Stark but lately, not so much. Tony blinked when Lyla came over. "Um...thanks." He took a sip of the coffee. "This is really good, thank you."

"Thank you for your compliment," Lyla said with a smile, then vanished.

Miguel was used to Lyla's behavior when he had guests, and didn't react. Turning to close the door after Tony was inside the lab, he then walked them both over to the workbenches where he'd worked on dismantling both weapons, lifting his own mug again once he was close enough. "These are the two weapons I sent you the pictures of. I'll quickly go through what each one did before all the non-alien technology was overloaded. This one produced some sort of concussive blast, it was easily capable of destroying concrete and stone," he explained, and went on to explain the blaster in more detail, before turning his attention to the other weapon. "This one is more interesting. It was... an anti-gravity gun, I suppose is the best way to describe it. Whatever it was aimed at was caught within its beam, and was stuck there until it was turned off. It looked to be very awkward for the user to use at speed, but I think that was down to the internal gyroscope having a bigger effect on the weapon than the user had anticipated."

Tony sipped his coffee as he listened to Miguel explain everything. He sighed heavily. "So what you're saying is that the people using the weapons didn't really know anything about them." That didn't bode well at all.

"They knew how to pull the trigger, and how to scare the shock out of people with them, but other than that... No," Miguel replied, and drank some coffee. "I'm guessing these weapons come as a surprise to you?" he asked, then picked up one of the Chitauri crystals.

"Yeah, they do. All of the Chitauri tech was supposed to be gathered up and stored in a secure facility until it could be destroyed." He shook his head. "This is...." He sighed again. "Something else to worry about."

"I'm sorry to have worried you," Miguel said. "I didn't realize this was as big a thing as it seems to be. My history books don't seem to match up with things that have happened through that door, and these weapons... Like I said, I've never seen them before, and I just wanted to know what the power sources were."

He drank the rest of the coffee in his mug, then looked over at Tony again. "These are my first experiences with doors, so I'm still asking the probably-obvious questions, but are we able to influence things that happen there after the doors close? If you left information about what was happening, would people know to act on it, or would it vanish when our ability to access that point in the timeline goes away?"

Tony shook his head. "I'm glad you didn't learn about things like this." It meant it didn't make a big impact.

"From what I understand, we can't change anything." He sipped his coffee. "No matter what we do, it's like we were never there."

Miguel set his mug down, and started to pace a little. "So we can't leave a message for the Avengers that are through that door? How do you know? Do the same doors open repeatedly?" he wondered, then looked round at Tony.

"Say you stopped a bank robbery as Iron Man, and you stop people from getting injured. But you only got to do it because of the door. The Iron Man from this time is, I don't know, fighting Skrulls in space with Wasp and Spider-man. Once the door closes, what happens to the injured people?"

"I don't know." Tony shrugged. "We've never had a door open in the same time twice. I just know that things that happened in New York in 1930 had no impact on things that happened in New York present day." He hadn't ever thought of that. Did the people they helped stay helped or was it like they were never there in the first place?

Shock it.

"But we can restock. So... it's a one-way flow? Sort of. We can bring things here. These weapons and crystals will stay here once the door closes, like the food and books and clothes people bring back stay. But we can't stay, right? We get brought back here," Miguel continued, thinking out loud and tossing the Chitauri crystal about from hand to hand, "and we can't leave anything behind. That is... really shocking annoying."

"And we can't bring people through. Only things. And dogs." That one still confused Tony. He finished off his coffee and set the mug down. "You'll drive yourself insane trying to figure it out. Trust me." He'd gone in circles himself for years.

The instant Tony's mug was set down, Lyla appeared again. "Hello, Tony. Would you like some more coffee?" she asked, stretching tall before running her hands through her hair.

"Tony, this is Lyla," Miguel said, "she's my holo-agent. She has hard light capabilities in this lab and in my apartment, but she's only a holo anywhere else."

"Tony, I am told that you created two AIs. JARVIS and FRIDAY. Are they operational, and if so, would I have permission to interact with them?" she asked, then smoothed her skirt down.

Tony jumped when Lyla appeared. "I...not right now, thank you." He cleared his throat. "At the moment Jarvis is only in my apartment and Friday is only in my lab and on my phone." He pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked it before putting it back. "For right now, I'd rather you didn't. Some of my security protocols got wiped in the switch and I need to set them back up first."

"Of course, Tony. If you would like more coffee at some point in the future, just say my name," Lyla said, then vanished once more.

"Sorry, she's, uh. Kind of autonomous at times," Miguel explained, setting down the crystal. "So, do you have any questions? Have you worked with these crystals before?"

"It's alright." He was sure Jarvis would be the same way if he had a holographic form. Tony looked over the weapons again, sighing. "I have about a million questions. I tried working with them once but they're kind of unstable." At least for what he tried.

"Unstable? In what way?" And there he'd been, tossing one around like a kid's toy. Shocking idiot, O'Hara.

Tony pulled out his phone and pulled up a file, handing it over to Miguel. "Different types of radiation can cause different reactions. They're lucky they didn't blow themselves up." He picked up one of the crystals. "Like this, they're dormant. So don't worry "

Miguel took the phone and scanned through the file. "Oh, shock," he muttered, "how many of those things are out on the streets?" Could he get more of the weapons? Was there a point if nothing they did had any effect?

"There shouldn't be any." Tony pinched the bridge of his nose. "I created a department specifically for the collection and destruction of these things. Nobody should have them." He gestured to the weapons. "And this is exactly why."

"Nobody should have them, I agree," Miguel said, clearly frustrated with the restrictions imposed on them by the doors, "but I took these off a group of guys intent on emptying a load of ATMs with them, and they didn't care about hurting anyone in the process. So they are out there. I just don't know how big a problem it is."
