Who: Sookie and Tommy
Where: Outside the Sully house in the backyard.
When: After she asked him to meet her.
Warnings: Low, possible mentions of Sookie being in a place at war.
Open: To Sullys and others that might be at the house.

Sookie formed a small fireball between her hands and walked around the yard slowly, melting the snow and warming the area. She then directed the fire into a lantern, and hung the lantern from a tree branch to give them more light. Adjusting to being home was strange enough without the cold and dark. She had so much to catch up on with her family, just seeing them again and knowing they were okay was huge. And she didn't mind the chance to show off.

Tommy was delighted that Sookie and Izzy were back. Even though they'd only been gone a couple of days from his point of view, he knew the time on their side could have been vastly different. Hadn't Uncle Jake crammed eleven years into two months, or something? And who knew how long he'd been away for?

He went out to the back yard, wrapped in a blanket. He had his arms wrapped round himself under the blanket, hands tucked in under his arms to try and keep all the sparks as contained as possible. He didn't say anything at first, he just watched Sookie use her magic setting things up from where he stood at the back door and then he managed a smile. "Hey, Sookie. How're you?"

"I'm good." Sookie answered, staring at her brother. "It's really good to be back and see you. And see everyone. It feels like it's been forever." She meant it. She had missed her family everyday while she was gone. Considering everything that had been happening when she returned, she had thought the man had brought her back, only to make see everyone die.

"Are you warm enough?" She asked, looking at the blanket. "I could try to make it warmer. Or we could go inside." She had thought it would be easier to demonstrate her abilities outside with more room and less people, but she could make it work inside too. As excited as she was to show off her skills, the most important thing was that she was with her family again.

"I'm warm enough, yeah. I'm just... wearing a blanket," Tommy explained, before walking over to stand beside Sookie. Or at least, that was the intention. Once he got close enough, he untucked his hands and gave his sister as big a hug as he could manage. "We missed you. I missed you," he told her. "Are you sure you're okay? You weren't hurt or, or... you weren't hurt?"

Sookie hugged her brother back tightly. "I missed you all too. So much." She nodded. "I'm okay." There had been a war and she'd been hurt a few times, but she wasn't hurt now. "Where I was could be bad at times. But there was good stuff too. I was taken in by a group of technomages. They were different technomages than our family."

"Different? In what way?" Tommy asked, stepping back once Sookie had said she was okay. And she obviously remembered where she'd been, so that helped, too.

The sparks around his fingers were a bit brighter than before, but weren't hurting him. They were just weird. And a bit distracting, so he wrapped the blanket round himself again and kept his hands inside it.

"What did they teach you?"

"They weren't born technomages. They would do an apprenticeship with a powerful technomage to learn the skills. And they would get implants. Almost like they were cyborgs. It let them combine technology and biology. They could form a connection with technology, control it with their minds the way we control our bodies. After someone died, they could download information from a brain." Sookie tried to explain.

She couldn't help glancing at his fingers, being distracted by the sparks. All that time with the technomages and she still had her problems with attention. "You kind of look like Adele. I know it's not the same. Maybe she has some tips for you until it goes back to normal."

She focused back on the technomages. "They taught me so much. There's associate, that's what they call bonding with technology like with a space ship or with a computer. Shield, that lets me create a force field around myself. Electron incantation to communicate with people far away. I even tried to reach people on the island, but that didn't work." There was a pause, a moment of sadness before her eye lit up again. "Fireballs and plasma beams. Holo-demons! Shadow skin. Oh, but to understand that, I'd have to tell you about the shadows." Her words were tumbling out excitedly. She couldn't be certain how much of it made sense. "And so much more. Let me show you." She lifted up off the ground, appearing to float in the air. She was actually standing on an invisible platform, but she'd explain that after she got a reaction.

Tommy listened as Sookie explained. "So they're not magic, they're more... yeah, cyborgs, like you said. Have you got the implants?" he wondered, then nodded as Sookie flicked her attention to his sparks. He'd grown up with her, he was used to it.

"Yeah, I guess I kinda do. They're new, I dunno what's causing them."

And then she was back to the technomages again, and the list of the things they could do! The associate thing sounded pretty cool, and the electron thing, and all of it, really. He was about to ask if she knew how to do all of it when she started floating. "You... how? If it isn't our magic... It's not maglev tech, it can't be, there's nothing in the ground for it to react to." He was down on the ground after that, head over to the side and almost touching the dirt as he tried to see how she was doing it.

"I have some of the implants but I didn't finish my apprenticeship. I wasn't there long enough." Sookie commented, not bothered by that at all. She'd take being home sooner over it any day. She frowned as he said he didn't know what was causing the sparks. "You should try to figure it out. Mom might know." She wasn't sure if any of the island doctors would be able to help him.

She shook her head as he put his he went down to the ground. "No, Tommy. It's not the ground." She lowered the invisible rectangular platform until she could step off it, then had it float up into her hands. Of course, from his point of view, it probably looked like some strange mime act. "It's this." She held the platform in one hand and ran her other hand along the edges of it. "I know you can't see it, but trust me, it's very cool. Way more fun that a hoverboard."

"How do the implants work with your magic?" Tommy wondered, then automatically reached out to where Sookie was apparently holding something. The sparks round his fingers got even brighter, and he paused. "I don't want to wreck anything," he admitted, so he balled his fist and then moved so that whatever was in Sookie's hands, he was going to touch it with his arm just above his wrist. Then he did it again, because that couldn't be right, could it? But it had to be.

"You have an invisible floating platform," he said, glancing up from where he was looking at where his arm was touching the platform. "Can anyone use it or just you?"

"I think they make it stronger, work in tandem with my magic. And most of the time, the implants work like they would with the other mages." Sookie looked at him. "You don't need to worry about wrecking it. The technomage's equipment is based on shadow tech, meant to withstand the worst wars." She'd seen shadow tech recovered from planets that had been destroyed.

"I do." She answered. "Any technomage with the implants can use it. It's kind of like having a remote control in your body that you use with your mind. It takes practice though. I've seen mages ride them around or go really high. I'm still learning that."

He nodded when she pointed out he wouldn't be shorting anything out, and ran his hand round the edge of the thing. "That's pretty cool," he said, watching as his sparks showed the edges of the platform close to where he was touching it. "I don't want to try it out, but the technology sounds amazing."

He let go of the platform after that, absently trying to get all the sparks to go to one place at least, but that just made them act all kinds of stupid, flaring up and sputtering out and all sorts, so he let them be. "What else do you have? Do you have scars from the implants? Where are the implants? You've mentioned these shadows a couple times, what are they?"

"Most of the rest of my stuff are things I can generate." Sookie nodded. "I have scars." She turned and moved her hair out of the way, letting him see the scar that started on her neck. It went all the way down her back, most of it hidden by her clothes. "The implants are a part of my central nervous system now."

She paused, thinking of the best way to explain the different races to someone who hadn't been to that universe. "There were races, called the first ones, that were older than humans, billions of years older. Most of them moved beyond the rim of known space. The vorlons and the shadows stayed behind. They were supposed to help the younger races, like humans and so many other races." She paused again. "But the vorlons and the shadows couldn't agree on how do it. The vorlons thought we needed order. The shadows believed that growth came from conflict. Kind of a survival of the fittest. They worked in secret, manipulating governments to start wars, creating weapons, doing all kinds of terrible things. They made the technology. The technomages figured how to use it without them. Eventually there was an all out war with the shadows."

Tommy almost reached out to brush a finger along the scar on her neck, forgetting about his sparks for the moment. "Did... did it hurt?" he asked quietly, not really expecting something like that. He'd thought maybe they'd be little small things, scars like a deep papercut or something similar. The thought of his sister hurting... his mind threatened to skitter away at the notion, but he forced himself to pay attention to what Sookie was saying.

"Did you meet them? The shadows or the ...vorons? No, vorlons. Did you get caught up in the war?"

"It did. But it was manageable." Sookie answered, not wanting to explain how the pain was like an initiation to her, a shared experienced with the other mages. "It doesn't hurt anymore."

"I never met a shadow. That's a good thing." Sookie had seen others changed and manipulated by them. She wouldn't have wanted to bring that back to the island. "There was a Vorlon, Kosh, that was an ambassador. He usually wore an encounter suit. I've heard stories about what he looked like without it, but I don't know if I believe them." She shook her head. "I was only around for the start of the war. When things got bad, we went into hiding."

"Okay. Okay, good," he said with a brief nod, before something occurred to him. "Do you know how long you were away? What else can you show me here? I liked the sound of that Associate thing, but what's shadow-skin? If the shadow people are the bad guys, why do you have their technology?"

He yawned after that. Not through boredom, but because he was exhausted. "Show me something else, and then I'll have to make coffee. Do you want some?"

"I told Mom it was a year, but it was longer than that. I was there from 2259 to 2261." Sookie answered. "Shadow skin is what covers a shadow vessel. It's black and shimmery and always moving. There's little waves of energy running through it. Technomages can cover themselves with it, for protection." The history would be harder to explain. The technomages had the tech by the time she arrived. "The shadows created the technology. They gave it to a race called the Taratimude and tried to turn them into soldiers for them. One of the Taratimude escaped and created the technomage order. It spread to the other races from there."

"One quick thing then?" She took a step back and then projected a small, cute, holographic kitten that walked over to her brother and put its paw on his foot. With a wave of her hand and a few words muttered, the kitten disappeared. "I'd love some coffee. And maybe a slice of pie?" She was still a Sully.

Tommy blinked at the dates she gave. "That's even further on than Dad and Uncle Jakes," he said, and wanted to see the Shadow skin. And all the other things. Including a little cat that pawed at his feet. "Are you better at it than the other technomages because you're actually using magic as well?" he wondered out loud, catching himself from bending down to pet the cat. "Izzy's gonna love that one. She'll have you making unicorns and tribbles and fan lizards all the time," he added with a smile.

"I'll see if there's pie or if Dad found all the hiding places again."

"Yeah, it was a different universe too. No one knew of Na'vi or Pandora. And there were so many other races." Sookie shrugged. "Having actual magic helps, but they had years of experience and study. Plus, they were defending themselves. Instead of a little kitten, they could make great holographic dragons and demons that could scare anyone. And the same holodemons could go into a computer system, like a virus and shut down an enemy's tech." She giggled. "Mom will love it too. Pets that won't shed or make a mess."

She nodded and followed him inside. "Maybe there's some hidden in the fridge, in the crisper." She suggested.

Tommy headed over to the fridge and opened it up, not worried about his sparks interacting with any of the power or components in it - enough Sullys had been overcharged at one point or another that most of the big kitchen things had been tweaked to take that into account. He rummaged around and found a couple of different bits of pie. "I got a slice of cherry, and ... Apple. There's some apple, and I dunno what this one is." Three different plates got set out on the counter, and then Tommy set about making coffee.

"So... could you make a holographic ikran?" he asked, once the coffee was brewing, "or do you just make little things at the moment?"

Sookie smiled and took a look at the apple pie, to see if it was made from the apples on the farm. So much had changed while she was gone, it was good to know that her family would always have pie and coffee. "Which slice do you want?" She asked. It had been so long, she'd forgotten what his favourites were.

"I could make it. The challenge would be trying to project it any distance. It would pretty much only work if I was standing right next to it. And I wouldn't be able to give it life, not yet. Maybe with practice." She'd keep up with her magic and maybe she'd be able to defend her family from whatever was coming next.
