Cristiano float just beneath the surface on his back as he await Jake's arrival. From above he could be easily spotted in the clear waters with his tanned skin, dark hair aloft in the sea, and of course the massive tail of blue and yellow. He sighed, moving a hand across his bearded jaw where he let his scruff grow into something a bit thicker. Nothing severe, nothing long, just enough to be more than a stubble. This venture could be important, life changing; or he could waste everyone's time with concern and distress for nothing but a gathering school of fish.

Of course, most sea creatures did not fear schools of fish. That was what worried him.

The octopus that lived in their house had been scarce for several days, only found to be hiding in the very corner of the home underneath and behind the shell of their bed. Now, Cristiano did not speak with the animals, he did not have such a gift as it was even rare among their people, but he could read their worry and soldiers were trained to recognized unusual activity. The fact that the ocean simply felt still, quiet...dead...it had not bode well. So he took to his friends to find a solution.

He just hoped it was one he could resolve.

The big sky monster was an obvious sign of Jake's arrival. Cristiano somersaulted back in a loop before streaking toward the pier. He gained speed in the short distance he had to go before propelling himself out of the water. His hands grabbed to the wood edge with a slop-slap from the liquid clinging to his skin. A heavy splashing sound followed as his tail kicked the surface so he could get out.

"Hey, Jake!" Cristiano said with a smile as he pulled himself up onto his biceps, hanging by his arms. "How are you? Thanks for coming!"

Banshee skittered backwards when Cris appeared, his claws clacking on the wood of the pier. Jake's ears flickered at the splashing, not wanting to get water in his ears if he could help it, before getting to his feet again.

"Kaltxi, ma Cris. I'm okay. You?" he asked, crouching down and holding out a hand in case Cris wanted help getting up onto the pier.

"Ah, sorry!" Cris apologized to Banshee and Jake as he hung there. "Didn't mean to startle you. Just takes a lot of oomph to get up here." He chuckled and started to pull himself up before gladly taking Jake's hand. He weighed quite a bit, considering he was a half-man of muscle and then half-fish of even more tightly packed muscle and the heft of scales.

"I'll be better when I know what's going on over there. And you come shoaling with me! I've missed it." He grinned.

At the mention of the word 'Shoaling', Jake's eyes widened as he had a sudden memory of surfing, but underwater, and he grinned. "I know what that is," he said to himself, and helped pull Cris out of the water, hopefully without scraping him against the side of the pier. "I remember! We went shoaling!" he added, grinning at Cris.

The merman laughed and nodded at Jake as if he had five heads but was impressive and maybe a little like a babe. "Yes! We've gone a few times!" He said with a grin as he curled his tail and perched, all in one piece. "Why does that surprise you?" Cris asked, apparently not in the know with Jake's situation.

He took a breath with a frown and a bit of a wheeze. Already suffocating on land. The clock was officially ticking.

"I got sent home to Pandora, and then brought back. I didn't remember any of this when I came back, but I'm getting little flashes every so often and then I remember things. People have explained things to me, and I know I knew you, I know we were friends, but until you said shoaling, I didn't remember. I still don't remember very much, but it's better than nothing? I'm sorry." His ears had dropped low as he explained, but then he picked up on Cris wheezing and he frowned with concern.

"We should get going, right?"

He looked at Banshee, then at Cris and then nodded. "If we can get you onto Banshee's back, you can hold onto this," he said, going over to his ikran and showing Cris the harnesses that kept Jake's footrests strapped onto Banshee. "Does that work?"

A look of understanding and Cris shook his head. "Don't apologize! I didn't know!" He smiled and motioned to Banshee to get going. "I'll tell you everything! I'll embellish to make me sound good," he teased while nodding.

"That looks fine. I just don't like feeling like a fish in the pelican's mouth. This is an improvement."

Jake smiled back, and then laughed at Cris's plan. "Sounds good to me. And then I ask Juliet what really happened, is that right?"

He went over to Banshee and formed Tsaheylu, and quickly told him the plan. The ikran screeched, headbutted Jake in the chest twice and moved over towards Cris before dropping down as low as he could manage, lowering his wing as much as possible. Jake broke their bond, and then went to see how he could help Cris.

Cris howled with laughter while waving a hand at Jake. "No! Don't involve Angelfish! You can trust me!" He said as the other hand held him up. He watched with awe at the communication between the two before reaching for Banshee. "Thank you, my friend. You're a good beast." Fear struck Cris as he had to climb up, his strong tail pushing him up. Jake's help was appreciated, but Cris was a brute in his own right.

Settling in the seat, he looked back for Jake.

"How do you breathe air? It's too dry!"

"We breathe air," Jake said, pausing as he rejoined with Banshee, "because we have lungs and we're not part-fish. The air back home's different again. The gravity's weaker and the air is denser. Tawtutes can't breathe it at all, it kills them."

He climbed onto Banshee, and then looked down at Cris. "Hold on, as tight as you can. Yell if you need my attention. And which direction do you want me to go?"

Banshee clearly didn't feel the need for such checks, and let Jake know he was taking off about half a second before he actually did.

Cris frowned with worry at the idea of being killed immediately and found himself thankful for this air. Then, no sooner as they agreed to be off than they were going. Saying prayers and beloved fairwells to Juliet, Cristiano hung tight to the ikran.

"Northwest side!" He shout over the wind. "I'm hoping it's obvious!"

Northwest, okay. Jake glanced down to orient himself, then told Banshee what way they needed to go. They banked round once Banshee had reached a good height, and then they were off, flying as fast as they could go. Jake had told Banshee over and over about this being a hunt of sorts, and the Ikran loved to hunt. This one was stranger than most, but then again, this island was nothing but strange. There were no silly acrobatics or mad dives down to the water; they flew fast and they flew straight, like an arrow from a bow.

Watching over the beast's neck, Cristiano frowned. He felt a little sick being up that high and having to look down. Ugh. But as they soared along and the ocean passed by, came in to view, he stuck out a hand. "Look!" He shout.

Up ahead deep into the ocean a darkness had spread. It shimmered on the surface like a black mirror tinted with purples and greens. It was disgusting and the closer they got the worse it looked. While the slick wasn't large it certainly had potential to be deadly to the sea life that hadn't cleared out.

Cris looked back at Jake with hurt in his eyes as he wait to go lower.

Jake directed Banshee to go down, and the ikran spiraled lower and lower until Jake spotted a rocky bit not too far from the slick. "I'm gonna get Banshee to land on that," he told Cris, and sent Banshee towards it. Soon enough, they were skimming the surface of the sea.

"Do you wanna jump off now?" he asked, thinking that it would be much easier for Cris than sliding down over the rocks they were now circling.

Nodding, Cristiano wait for a wave to pass before he released himself from Banshee's back and gave a sort of playful salute to his friend before plummeting to the ocean's surface. He met the surface with as lease resistance as possible, arms above his head with pointed hands and a straight body to follow. Rejoining with the sea was like a having a cool drink of water on a hot summer's day--for a terragog analogy, anyway. He circled around and then started to swim toward the dark patch before coming to a halt.

Fish float in the water on their backs, eyes void of life. A clear trail of whatever the blackness was seeped up through a series of cracks in the earth. Cristiano felt his stomach turn over with horror. Even the coral already looked pale, not quite bleached, and the merman's heart wept.

Turning, he head toward the rocks to meet up with Jake and broke the surface when he neared. "Do you recognize that?" he asked, hopeful the man before him might know what it was. "It comes from the ocean floor! Like some sort of....flesh wound bleeding." He frowned deeply, dark brown eyes cast aside. "I've heard of natural oil leaks but never like this."

Jake was sitting on a rock, waiting for Cris to reappear, and watching the slick. He had taken a couple of photos of the surface of the water while he waited as well.

"It looks like an oil slick, but... I dunno. You need to get samples. If we get enough samples, then all the science people back in the city can work out if it's normal oil or not. And if you have your phone with you, you should film it so they can see where it's coming from."

He got to his feet and took off his carry-pouch. He took his phone out, since it was waterproof, and looked through to see what else he had. There was the little bottle Laura had given him for water when he was hallucinating. They could put some of the oil stuff in that. "Can you get close enough to the black stuff and catch it in this?" he asked Cris, holding the bottle out towards him.

Oh, Merrow save him, he had to touch it.

Cris nodded and sighed as he reached out for the bottle. "Yeah, I can do that," he agreed. What choice did he have? Someone had to go near it and he wasn't about to ask Jake to go out of his way today any more than he already had. He fished his phone out of his vest pocket and looked at it. Video...video....

"Terragogs are so confusing," the merman then mused to himself before looking up at Jake. "I'll be back!" he promised, now prepared for the 'adventure' and swam off. The closer he got to the seepage the worse he felt in his gut, a feeling he did not enjoy. Something was truly wrong with this.

After a deep breath, he lunged forward with a quick flip of his tail and float the rest of the way, gathering the liquid in the bottle after uncapping it just when his hand dragged through a thick tendril of shimmering darkness. Ugh. He curled his tail to stop, holding out the phone once he was steady, feeling a bit choked as he continued to try not to breathe in the liquid that no doubt killed the fish around him. Still, as he got the video he took just the smallest of breaths and swore audibly into the microphone before turning to get out of there. He coughed the whole way back to the rocks.

Jake had dived in after Cris anyway. He got some photos of his own, and decided to take one of the fish as well in case that would help. That was one thing he'd learned from Tommy and Grace and Norm and all the other nerds he knew. More samples was Best. He didn't want a gross dead fish in his carry pouch, though, so he resurfaced and got some fresh air before diving back down and cutting off a length of kelp with his knife, then grabbed the first fish... no, the first couple of fish he saw, and headed back for the rocks.

He was sitting on the same rock as before, wrapping the fish in the kelp, when Cris approached. Jake tilted his head to the side as he watched him. "Are you okay? What happened?" he asked as Cris broke the surface.

Had he noticed Jake following sooner, he would have told him not to. It wasn't safe. They didn't know what this seepage was! What if Jake got sick? It would be his fault that his friend got ill and that was not something he had ever wanted when asking for his help.

"Did you swallow any of that?" he asked before a hacking cough. "I breathed it in...my lungs are burning." Another cough, as if trying to clear his throat from what felt like tar filling it solid. He sank just under the water to make it easier to breathe than the air, but his deep breaths were interrupted each time by a throat clearing sound or a straight cough.

"Do you think we have enough? We should go." He point. "I'm going to swim a bit, to wash off anything stuck on me. I can't bring this back to Juliet or Cora."

"I didn't go near enough to it to swallow any, no. I didn't even touch it," he said, putting the fish down to the side to move closer to Cris to try and check on him. The coughs sounded disgusting already.

"I think we've got enough, yeah. I want to go up and take some photos of it from the air. Do you want me to wait while you swim, or will I head up while you're swimming?"

The merman nodded, glad his friend had not gotten into harms way as he had. He would carry on any burden alone.

"You can take the photos. I'll swim as far as I can until you're done," Cristiano responded while giving another cough trying to clear his chest. It sounded as if he had some sort of phlegm deep down in his lungs, like allergies had struck him with such a mighty force he would need medicine, a steam, and vapor rub all at once.
