Who: Jake, Sunila, Juliet, Sullys
Where: Sully house
What: Jake and Sunila are visiting!
When: Saturday
Open: To any of the Sully Clan who're there at the time. Subthreads ahoy!

Jake felt weird. He ignored the constant pain/numbness combination; that didn't factor into his current feeling of "weird" since it was always there now. The tiredness was also a given, so he ignored that as best he could as well. The nerves, though. They were new, and awful, and he wondered why the fuck he was nervous about going back to the house he'd lived in for fourteen years. He stared up at the front of it, then put his hands on his wheels and started to push.

Fuck. That felt awful too. But then again, he'd spent almost all of the last nine or ten weeks in a bed. Of course he was gonna have lost some strength. Fucking hell, though. He took as deep a breath as he could manage, and kept going. "I hope someone's in," he said to Sunila, glancing round and up at her, and then swore quickly as he managed to steer off-course. Other Jake had made this look easy, he realized. Once he was back on course for the door, he headed straight for it and then knocked loudly before heading on inside anyway. "Hello? Anyone in?" he asked, moving out of the way so Sunila could come in after him and not get tangled up in his IV leads or tubes or bags of medical Stuff, and then he just stared all round him. It hadn't changed. Of course it hadn't, he'd only been gone for 2 months or so on this side, but eleven years was a long time to be away from anywhere.

He pushed himself up straighter in the chair, and then laughed as Gwen appeared from somewhere and jumped up into his lap. The little cat stretched up enough that she could nuzzle under his chin for a moment, before lying down and curling up on his knee. "Hey, Gwen," he said softly, "I missed you too."

Jake nodded as Jules talked about the sea caves and the reefs, which all sounded really interesting. He couldn't help but compare what she was saying with what he knew about the sea back on his Earth, and how his Tommy would know something about the sea bed or mention the big reef that used to be just off the coast of Australia, and he'd been about to ask her more about them when she asked about him.

"I... I'm sure. The doctors said it was cool," he said, "I'm just... tired. And out of shape. This is my first proper go in a wheelchair. I gotta start somewhere, right?"

"Absolutely." She still thought he had no business being out of the hospital, but he was right about having to start someplace. "I'm glad you decided I was worth getting out of the hospital bed for." She grinned at him, a bit touched that he'd made such an effort to come see her.

"I know what that's like. When I first came back I could barely swim a few hundred yards before I needed to take a break." It wasn't quite the same, she knew, but the solidarity was there.

"You're worth way more than that, Jules, don't be silly," he replied, grinning back before scrubbing at his face with a shaky hand.

"Yeah. Like that. But you're getting better all the time, right?" he asked, because if it was true for her, it would be true for him as well. It didn't matter that he'd seen the stupid movie years ago, or that he'd seen his other self using the chair and doing all kinds of things for himself. Jake was the one in the chair now and despite the brave face he was trying to keep on all the time, he currently felt like he could do fuck-all.

"Aww." She gave into her impulses and leaned over to give him a hug. It was a little awkward between the chair and her being more or less stuck where she was unless she pushed herself back in the water, but she made it work.

"Yep, a little stronger every day." And her recovery was probably faster being stuck in her current form than it would be if she could switch back and forth. She had to swim all the time, unless she was sleeping or sitting someplace. It was just the intensity that varied. "You'll get there in no time, and I'm sure mom and the others will be looking at stuff that can help you too." It had been on the the of her tongue to say that he'd be climbing trees again someday but thought better of it at the last second.

There was no sense getting his hopes up for something the family might not be able to deliver.

He hugged back as best as he could, not giving a fuck about getting wet from her hair or anything like that. Technically, it probably wasn't a very good hug, since he couldn't really lean forward and there were chair bits in the way and all that annoying stuff, but he didn't care. They were hugging and it was cool.

"Yeah, I know Mr. Stark's got some things he's offered to let me try out. A chair and leg braces, but I'd need to use crutches with them. And I reckon your mom's already itching to get at tweaking them or whatever." He was gonna need to get himself ready for using anything, though. If visiting had done nothing else, it had showed him just how much work he was going to need to do, even just to be capable of pushing a wheelchair around.

She held on for a few heartbeats longer, then reluctantly let go of him and pushed herself back a bit so as not to get her fins caught on the chair.

"Once you're a little better you could do some of your therapy in the pool. I'd be right there to help." She liked the idea of being able to help him in his recovery, and water was good for rehab wasn't it?

"I could, yeah." He hadn't even thought about the sort of therapy he'd have to do. Other Jake had done water therapy, hadn't he? He tried to remember, but it was over twenty years ago for him, and he hadn't really liked even thinking about the therapy other-him had had to go through when he was ten or eleven. Maybe he should have paid more attention.

"You wouldn't mind?"

"You helped me to learn how to ride a bike without training wheels, I think it's a fair trade." She might not be the best at being subtle, but she thought it was a good joke and hopefully lift his spirits a little. He wouldn't remember it of course, but she did and that was all that mattered.

"But seriously, I'd be happy to. And who better than me to be in there with you? I'm made for the water!" She slapped her tailfin against the pool deck for illustration of the point.

"Well, yeah, that's true," he said with a smile, "but I reckon I won't be up for doing laps any time soon so don't be expecting any races just yet."

The thought of just drifting in the water was all kinds of enticing, though. He rubbed absently at his chest as he wondered when he'd be able to just lie back in the water, close his eyes and let everything else happen somewhere else.

"One day you will." Juliet responded with a smile. "I'll go easy on you though, at first anyway."

"As soon as you're healed up enough that the doctors won't throw a fit with you getting wet I'll be there for you whenever you want." She liked the idea of helping him get better, as better as he could be without being able to walk again. It could have been worse, he had full command of his upper body it looked like. He was just weak from his wounds yet.
