Allerdale Hall was slowly transforming. The house that had started to fall apart over decades was slowly starting to regain some of its former glamour. Thomas had barely remembered the glory this house had represented when he had been a child. Back then, he had not been allowed to enter most of the rooms. Like the excavator the restoration kept him focused. Life had taught him that following a goal and having a task made everything else more bearable. The more the mansion disconnected from the ruin it had once been, the more even Lucille became a shadow. His loss still haunted him. There were things he could never share with Edith and which his wife would hold no understanding for. But it did not weigh so heavy on his mind anymore. It did not make him stare into the fire for hours or spent days brooding over what had been lost in the attic. Nonetheless, her room remained untouched. He would not have it changed and her memory spoiled. She deserved his pain. His mother was a different story. The only thing she had ever done for the siblings was to bear them into their miserable lives. Her portrait was scarring his new home and yet he was unable to retire it to sharp tools and flames. He simply stood there, staring at it for minutes and minutes more, and was unable to escape his own nightmares - may they belong to the future or the past. |
