On Wednesday afternoons, Milagra did the shopping. Sometimes she did this alone, and sometimes she brought her "sister" with her, and on other days, like this one, the family went out together. They strolled at a comfortable pace from shop to shop while Antonia raced ahead, flitting from window to window as some new thing caught her interest.
At one such instance, the girl cried "Flowers!" with such delight (and so loudly) that both Milagra and Al-Adil stopped abruptly. And indeed, the window of the shop was filled with all variety of flowers and green plants. At one time, that might not have been reason for anything more than passing admiration, but in this age, flowers, like so many other healthy growing things, were a rarity. "Can we go inside?" Antonia asked, her brown doe's eyes pleading. Al-Adil had not yet fully determined if she was aware of what advantage those innocent eyes gave her over her "father", but whether the tactic was intentional or not, his heart was far too soft to refuse her.
They entered the shop, and the scent of flowers enveloped them immediately. "Oh!" Milagra said in a tone of equal delight and it made Al-Adil smile. So serious, his eldest daughter. So often she acted much older than she was that it pleased him to see her take pleasure in such a simple, childish thing. It was indeed like stepping suddenly into paradise. The air was heavy with perfume and the many shelves and tables arranged with bouquets and potted plants gave the impression of standing in a lush garden. Al-Adil reached out to gently touch the delicate pink petals of a damask, the flower that, in his homeland, was called ward ash-Sham, the rose of Damascus.
