It's annoying as hell when you go to look up a song and find out it doesn't exist here. Especially confusing when the artist still exists, they just apparently never released that song.

But I told Natasha I'd do it, even if it did need a few substitutions. 18 rap tracks anyone can enjoy. If you don't like anything in here you're lying to yourself and everyone around you and you should feel bad.

There's a movie!

I haven't seen it, just trailers but there's a guy who like, hits his head and then gets told some old famous band doesn't exist. But he remembers them. So uses their music as his own. It's a whole thing. There's no coke either.

It's like that.

Yesterday, yeah. A little bit like the Mandela Effect except... real. (Unless he's actually just a brilliant but delusional songwriter.)

That's when enough people believe it, it becomes real, right?

Or like, people believe it's real.

I heard that somewhere.

It's when people are certain they remember things happening differently than they actually did. Named after the one where people remembered Nelson Mandela having died in prison. It's just a trick of the memory.

It's actually pretty interesting to think about.

But the music, I may have to give it a miss.

You've probably heard quite a few of them already. I put a self-imposed two songs per artist limit on it though or it would have been full of Kendrick and Mos Def.

Or, you know, maybe some people just don't like rap?

People don't like the idea of rap because they only think of a certain type. They're thinking about Eminem, not Lauryn Hill, Beyonce, Outkast, or Faithless. It's an incredibly diverse genre - in fact I'd actually call it more of a style than a genre.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]whatupdorks
2019-07-22 11:58 pm UTC (link)
It is a diverse style, but I still think it's a little close minded to assume everyone's tastes fall somewhere in the genre or style or whatever word you want to use to describe it. Musical taste is as subjective as art and not everyone has the same appreciation for either.

I also don't think you have the right to decide what people do or should like. Exposing people to music they may not have heard before it good. Implying that they're bad people if they don't like any of it? Kind of problematic, dude.

The roots of rap go back thousands of years and it's lasted that long for a reason. I'm sure theoretically there's someone who genuinely does not like any rap, but I've literally never met one - human, alien, or robot.

Wow, even Vision would have caught that was a joke. Sorry for being problematic.

Yeah. Our timeline she was a female-presenting robot created a long time ago to travel ahead of a major intergalactic threat warning planets about it and collecting information on what they tried to increase each one's chances. Tony's, she was a male-presenting AI that he... more-or-less accidentally created through a complicated series of events. Both basically designed to synthesize data, both became self-aware, fully realised people beyond their programming, both heroes. Just completely different origins.

She turned up around the start of some pretty bad times so there's probably a fair few people who wouldn't be too sorry about not remembering that far.

Curious. Patient. She accepted the value of all life as this basic fact that didn't even need to be considered and she could reframe things from perspectives no one else would ever think of, which was kind of funny because she was never any good at picking up sarcasm or irony. Could appreciate it once it was pointed out, though, and she liked wordplay. The way she explored emotion and experienced things just made everything seem new. She'd seen worse things than anyone could imagine but she was still incredibly genuine and free of cynicism, like instead of letting all the death harden her it just made her appreciate life more. I could never really manage that.

I can accept people not liking the harder stuff. I don't even like all the harder stuff. But there's plenty of rap with pretty broad appeal that people miss out on because they don't give it a try.

The artistic integrity of rap is no laughing matter.

I mean, not really. But it's music that's been with me through a lot so it's a bit like telling a serious coffee fanatic that it all tastes the same and you don't care as long as it keeps you awake.

It reminds me of jazz in a way, but I guess since jazz super influenced hip hop that's not surprising. I mean, right now I can't really listen to jazz without freaking out, but this is a close second, and it's the kind of music I've grown up with in NOLA.

Makes a lot of sense. I grew up in Harlem so even if jazz wasn't that popular anymore the Renaissance was obviously a big part of the music history there. There's definitely some wicked horn threads on To Pimp a Butterfly and Colouring Book.

Not bad but I have to ask...does Tupac not exist in your universe?

Because that's the only good reason to leave him off a rap playlist.

[info]machinesrus

Who?

Nah, I thought about including all that foundational stuff like Tupac, Biggie, Snoop, Wu Tang, but I figured that's a whole different list, really. I put in Lauryn because people often miss her when they're talking about the big names of the 90s but otherwise I wanted an overview of more recent artists. It's not really a list of the best rap after all, just a demonstration of the range of it.

[info]mrbillyrusso

I can appreciate that there’s enough range for that purpose, but you shouldn’t have to apologize for other people’s subjective morality. They want rap to be easily palatable regardless of what it does to the integrity of the artist’s creation. It’s no coincidence you don’t see people making the same demands of metal.

Fuck them. You should make that ‘best of’ playlist. I’ll make you something too, complete with unedited cursing.

I was holding back from commenting on how you hear people say "I like everything except rap" (or sometimes country and rap) but never death metal or electronica or dubstep.

Now a best of list that doesn't just look like something you could google in thirty seconds, that's a challenge. I'll have to think about that one.

You have a remarkable amount of patience. I think it’s more than fair to acknowledge the evident difference between the general reaction to a rapper saying ‘bitch,’ and a metal musician writing lyrics about sexual assault.

Are you taking this all on artistic merit instead of your own personal favorites? That almost makes me feel bad for my first choice.
