There's hardly a point to all this training if I don't find out what the Coliseum is all about, is there?

The point of training is it is to give you the means to survive. Fine. Can we just do this together and I'll hold back unless you are in a situation you can't get out of?

There is a big difference between fighting to survive or to defend and fighting for sport. Jacen would be so A Jedi shouldn't run from a fight when it's necessary, but we shouldn't seek them out, either, and there are better ways to train than a fight to the death in front of spectators, many of whom are gambling on the outcome.

Uncle Luke taught us to work together, as a team. He taught us that we're stronger together. If you insist on doing this, you should let us come with you. Sometimes it actually takes more strength to accept backup that is does to do it all yourself.

Master Skywalker has taught me a great deal. Why do you care about m

Haven't you ever wanted to challenge yourself, just because you could? This is hardly worse than anything we've faced in Goodland before, or back home and this time we've some control over who gets hurt, and who doesn't.

Yeah, I've tacked a harder training course or sparred with Jedi who are more experienced.

There isn't any control in a fighting arena. The only difference between that and facing an enemy organically is that in there it's being done for sport, not because you have to.

There are ways to get stronger and better that don't involve rejecting everything we're supposed to stand for, but like I said, if you insist on doing this anyway, we're not letting you do it alone.

There was a good reason the school I attended for magic banned offensive and battle magic years ago. It's useful, and I'm glad I ended up being able to learn some of it, but I would have preferred never having to use it. To me, battle magic is like insurance. I'm glad to have it when I need it, but I hope to never be in a situation where it's needed again.

At least it's a choice in this circumstance. Sometimes the things that happen in Goodland are much more dangerous and people end up hurt.

I just want to be better prepared, able to protect others here who need it.

How does your magic work?

It's a choice here as far as we know at least for our group. I'm new to Goodland, but I'm familiar with plenty of dangerous circumstances where people get hurt or worse. Plus, the Coliseum is a real place here. Or it's a real place on Earth in the time I'm from originally. It's been hundreds of years ago, but people were forced to fight to the death or they were thrown into a den for spectators to watch them be killed by lions for sport. With that kind of history, it's hard to know what might happen going in to fight even willingly.

Real experiences often lend to the best training sometimes, but those usually happen whether we want them to or not. When I was first learning magic, I might not have felt the same way, but after some of the things I've seen, I wouldn't want to walk into something like that willingly if I could help it.

My magic is called physical magic. Spells can involve items or ingredients, but often just moments of my hands in a particular way. There are other wizards and witches here, right? I'm similar, but at home we're called magicians.

I didn't realise there was an audience. That ..sounds a lot more brutal than what I'd heard. I'd had the idea perhaps it was more like a training grounds; people have said their injuries disappeared once they were done.

Before I came here I'd only ever learned that way. Practically. For survival. I'm glad to have Master Skywalker here, as a teacher- but I can't help feeling like theory can only take you so far.

There are. More than one sort, or so I've heard. And various abilities which might sound similar to magic - even though they're not called wizards or witches.

Traditionally, there is an audience, yeah. I haven't been inside, but I think I heard some crowd roars and cheering when I was nearby one day right after it appeared.

I've had a mix of both. I started out in a classroom but was quickly forced to learn as I went when my friends and I were faced with a big threat. At some point you do have to be tested to know how far you've come, but like I said earlier, if I could get by without willingly putting myself in that situation again, I would.

That's what I've seen in my limited time here too. Seems there's a different name depending on the person's home world.

If you’ve been training to fight as part of a show, yeah, sure. Are you a gladiator? Do what you want with the people, but please don’t fight the animals. They never did deserve to be out on parade like that, and I don’t think they should be now, so any hundreds of years later.

Ah. I thought maybe you were. Or a version of it if you weren't from a past with such things.

If it's anything like the real one, unfortunately, they do. I've not been in. I can tolerate a lot, but on the chance it's exactly like the original gladiator performances, I'd rather not watch it. Even if they're not actually real but some trick of this place.

So what are you training for if not to be a gladiator?

There might be something like that in my galaxy, but not on Jakku. And I thought they were just- apparitions, like this place does sometimes?

A Jedi. I hope. Where I'm from they're supposed to be defenders and protectors of the galaxy. Even if it isn't the same in Goodland, sometimes things happen here that you need to know how to fight to keep others safe.

I imagine it's a similar situation to other things that've happened here, though how similar, I don't know. It's not something people seem to be forced to participate in, which is good. It's merely there. I would think, like other things here, while it's around (and, assuming it's not some permanent structure like the forest) it's very real. Whether or not it'll have lasting consequences, however, is unknown. I'm not sure there's an easy way to know that.

I'm not sure what a Jedi is, but I can understand it from your description. I don't think it's bad to have people here who are willing and able to defend those who can't, for whatever reason, defend themselves. Like you said, sometimes things happen here. I think there's a difference between fighting to defend and fighting to prove yourself. And fighting for the pleasure of it. And fighting to stay alive.

I'm not judging, by the way. I can't say one way is better or worse than another, and I certainly can't say I've not done all of them and more. Thought you might have been a gladiator, which would have been interesting. But training to be a Jedi sounds interesting as well. Which, by the way, how do you train to be a Jedi anyway?

No one else here seems to think it's fun. What happened when you were in there?

That's how I look at it. It's a place designed to fight, and what I saw showed that no one was being forced to do it if they didn't want to.

I gave my name and they had a list of opponents, but I opted to go with someone random. We fought and I won. I'm going to do it again. I enjoy training and sparring, and it's important to do. This is just another opportunity for it.

I'm not planning to go into the arena to fight but I'll be there. I can support you through the Force but I understand wanting to challege yourself. All I ask is that you think before you do anything. I know you can do it though.
